http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_474699.jpg vs http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_571800.jpg
Vance Worley......Drew Hutchison
3-2, 3.00 ERA........5-3, 4.66 ERA

http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/mlb/images/team_logos/60x60/phi.gif
Worley continues to make his way back from an elbow injury. He allowed five hits and one earned run in six innings in a 6-4 loss in 12 innings to Baltimore on Saturday. He threw 93 pitches, so he should be able to go a little further this time.

http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/mlb/images/team_logos/60x60/tor.gif
Hutchison pitched well Saturday against the Braves aside from giving up a pair of home runs. He has shown good command since coming up from the minor leagues in late-April. He has 48 strikeouts and 19 walks in his first 58 innings with the Blue Jays.

http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_424324.jpg vs http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_460069.jpg
Cliff Lee.....Ricky Romero
0-3, 3.18 ERA........7-1, 4.15 ERA

http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/mlb/images/team_logos/60x60/phi.gif
The Phillies scored just 16 runs while Lee was pitching in his first nine starts this season, but he couldn't use a lack of run support as an excuse on Sunday in Baltimore. He blew a 4-1 lead to keep him winless entering the middle of June.

http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/mlb/images/team_logos/60x60/tor.gif
Romero has given up four runs in three straight starts and is coming off his shortest outing of the season Sunday. Romero has pitched much better at Rogers Centre. In almost exactly as many innings, his ERA is more than a run lower at home.

Sunday, June 17, 1:07 PM ET

http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_452718.jpg vs http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_506693.jpg
Kyle Kendrick........Henderson Alvarez
2-6, 5.08 ERA.......3-6, 3.87 ERA

http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/mlb/images/team_logos/60x60/phi.gif
Kendrick suffered through a bad start on Tuesday in Minnesota, allowing eight hits, six runs, two walks and two home runs against the Twins. With Roy Halladay on the disabled list, the Phillies will need better efforts from Kendrick.

http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/mlb/images/team_logos/60x60/tor.gif
Alvarez surrendered three home runs during his last start against the Nationals. He has now allowed at least one home run in all but two of his 13 outings this season. Alvarez also has lost four consecutive decisions and hasn't won since May 10.

Blue Jays hope to stop slide as Phillies visit

The slumping Blue Jays are losing games as well as starting pitchers and will look to end the downward trend on Friday as the Phillies head north of the border for a three-game series at Rogers Centre.

Toronto has lost six of its last seven games to fall below .500 for the first time all season. The Jays placed starter Brandon Morrow on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique on Wednesday, then watched Kyle Drabek leave his start vs. the Nationals with a right elbow injury after 4 1/3 innings that same afternoon.

A promising first two months of the season for the Jays has quickly sputtered in June. Manager John Farrell is trying to keep his team focused on the task at hand and not on the recent string of poor play and bad luck.

"I know guys are frustrated," Farrell said. "That expectation that we've referred to many times and we talked about at the onset of the season, that has not changed despite any recent injury, or games that have not finished as we intended or because we're not getting the bottom line result as frequently as we have at other times of the year. I think everyone is aware of where we are in terms of record or standing, but it doesn't dissuade the mentality or approach taken."

Farell doesn't want his team to feel discouraged by the recent misfortunes, including a three-game sweep by Washington.

"Well that's talked about when we address or when I talk to the team as a group -- the challenges that we face," the manager said. "The message that's always reiterated despite the challenges, whether it's the performance, whether we're in a stretch where things are going well for us as a group or injuries, our expectations don't change. If personnel change, we would hope that we're able to plug in the person that is going to replace someone with the intended goal remaining the same. We can't waver off our approach and what that approach is geared towards doing."

After an off-day on Thursday, right-hander Drew Hutchison is scheduled to start the series opener vs. the Phillies on Friday.

Hutchison is 5-3 with a 4.66 ERA in 10 starts this season. The rookie is 3-0 at Rogers Centre, with 22 strikeouts in 26 innings over four starts.

Like Toronto, the Phillies had a rough start to June. Philadelphia lost nine of its first 11 games to begin the month after posting a 16-13 record in May following an 11-12 mark in April.

Vance Worley is scheduled to start for the Phillies. The right-hander has never faced the Jays but is 1-0 with a 0.75 ERA in four career Interleague starts. On the season, he's 3-2 with 54 strikeouts in 54 innings.

Phillies: Utley begins rehab assignment
Chase Utley moved one step closer to returning to the Major Leagues when he began a rehab assignment with Class A Clearwater on Tuesday.

"That's definitely good news," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "Super."

Utley went 0-for-5 with three strikeouts as the designated hitter in his first game with the Threshers.

Position players have 20 days to rehab before they must be called up to the Majors, if they are healthy. If Utley has no setbacks, he could be back with the Phillies no later than July 2.

Utley went 0-for-3 in his rehab game on Thursday, and has yet to play second base, although he said his knee is feeling good.

Philadelphia's Jim Thome will get his last at-bats as designated hitter this season in the series against the Jays. Then, it's back to his role as a pinch-hitter

In six games at DH since June 8, Thome is a scorching 11-for-24 (.458) with 13 RBIs and his only three home runs of the season. After Wednesday's 9-8 win, the 41-year-old Thome said he's simply taking advantage of his opportunities.

"You never know when those moments are going to keep coming, and you cherish them," Thome said. "The position I've been in, it means a lot."

Blue Jays: Bautista moving up charts
Jose Bautista homered in the third inning on Wednesday off Nationals ace Stephen Strasburg. It was his 132nd career homer as a Blue Jay, passing Ernie Whitt to move into seventh on the club's all-time list.

Bautista has homered in each of his last two games and has 19 this season. He's batting .236 with 47 RBIs while slugging .520.

The outfielder now has seven home runs in June after hitting three in April and nine in May. He's also reached base in 14 straight games.

"When Jose's at his best, he's not expanding the strike zone where he's not forced to," Farrell said. "I think he has laid off a number of high fastballs, and when he has gotten pitches on the plate, we've seen for a long period of time what he's capable of doing, and that's the situation he's in right now."

Worth noting
The Jays are 3-6 vs. teams from the National League East this year.

The Phillies are 6-3 on Fridays this season.

Toronto is 16-15 at Rogers Centre this year.

Thursday marked the Phillies' first Interleage series win of the season.

Our bats need to come alive. Jose is doing his thing, but we need to get others going for sure. Phillies have decent pitching. So we need to get more aggressive.

Surreal to think Lee hasn't even picked up a win coming into mid-June, yikes!

Jays have a chance to get 2 out of 3. I think Hutch outduels Worley and Alvarez will have a solid game. Saturday is a toss up, but considering how bad the Phils are scoring Lee runs, if Romero can be sharp, the Jays could try the sweep.

Likewise if the Jays get swept and the bats are anemic in this series its time to make some coaching changes (MURPHY!)

ISn't that part of the problem?
What I meant by that was that we need to be more aggressive on scoring runs. We get runners on base and then we never bring them home. Small ball can help in that situation. We keep swinging for the fences when someone is on 2nd base. no more sleep walking through the games.

Say what you want. We need to start doing the little things right including getting that extra run in the bank, closing out late inning games and cutting down on the defensive gafs. I dont see a team that fails to score runs, I see a team that does everything else subpar.

06-15-2012, 12:03 PM
I say we sweep them. I like our pitching match-ups. Hopefully our 5-9 hitters aren't completely ****ing useless for this series. If Kelly and Yunel could produce a good series at the plate we have a chance for a sweep.

Can't believe Lee hasn't got a win yet. Lets keep it that way. With Bautista looking like he's back, taking lots of walks and getting on more, and if we can get both ends of the line up to contribute at the same time, then we can win all 3, but 2 of 3 is most likely.

I'm not too optimistic heading into the weekend series vs. the Phils. I say they take 2/3 with Hutch taking game 1. Our offense outside of Lawrie/Rasmus/Bautista has been dismal these last 10-15 games and I'm not expecting a turnaround in these next 3 games.

Colby Rasmus leads the league in WHAV– Well-Hit Average, which measures the percentage of at-bats in which a hitter made solid contact– while Yunel Escobar is near the bottom, as he typically is.

ive never heard of this stat but interesting that Rasmus leagues the league

hungry_eye
06-15-2012, 08:12 PM
before the Orioles did what they are doing this year, they spent a lot of time in the basement of the AL East. You could say the same thing about Tampa. How many years did Tampa relish on the basement floor before propelling into contenders? The Jays are good enough to play near the bottom but lack the talent to escape their fate. I hope our farm system delivers the type of talent necessary to compete, but I think there is plenty of room to improve this team.

Perhaps, but I can think of a time when everyone was predicting the imploding of the TB Rays. That year they went to the world series. In hindsight the only time I can think people speculated Jays success was the year we signed BJ Ryan and AJ Burnett and of course the Vernon Wells contract. Those were the days...

I'm worried about going back today and watching Romero walk off the mound. We are cursed.
But a good effort by the BP, who needs them starters
Bautista seems to now be getting on base at a .500 clip again, looking more comfortable
taking walks.
EE seems to be exploding at the plate now and showing much fustration.
Lawrie good day, except why does he steal 3rd at the wrong time.
What was Bautista doing in th 1st stealing 2nd and no slide. Seemed like a mis read, but it was 0-2 on EE , why was he running.

Anyways we still won and I expect Romero to have a good game today and we win again. Today Joey will get his 20th. Book it!

i agree, Romero struggles to find the strike zone, the jays have a taxed bull pen, yet the Phillis try to force the issue with a stolen base. That blunder totally changed the dynamic of that inning. I guess there is a reason why these teams are battling out of the cellar.

so, what do you think the solution is? I know the year prior to Cito coming on board, the Jays had a hitting coach (can't remember his name) that promoted patience and made had the Jays go deep into the count. However, the team failed to drive in runners and did hit into many DPs. When Cito arrived, the team began to bang out the long ball and began to win more games.

You gotta have an approach where you see good pitch, you hit it. Pitch recognition varies from batter to batter.

Then you go into a game with a game plan. i.e. if were to face a guy like Romero who throws a lot of junk, you stay patient, but against a guy like Lee who throws a lot of first pitch strikes you stay agressive.
