Apparently you aren't old enough to remember basketball back then...

Before the dream team, the USA Olympic bball team was all college kids.... When they made the dream team, they decided I still have a couple of college kids but laettner was the only one who made the cut...... I had his USA McDonald's dream team cup.... Traders it for the Ewing one tho

Side note: Laettner is one of very few players who have an NCAA title, an NBA title and an olympic gold medal. Anybody care to name a few more of the players who have all three?

Well, Magic, Jordan, and Russell are the easy ones.

I think KC Jones and Jerry Lucas both did as well.

And I am not sure who else.

Nope, although I really think they should have picked Jabbar for the Dream Team out of respect.

People that follow basketball know this, its not a secret. There had to be a college guy on the roster. If you looked at PSD over the last 4days you would see a thread with this topic as well.

What sucked was that Shaq should have been in it and it would've have been perfect. However, with both Ewing and Robinson taking up the 5 spot, they had to go with Laettner. I still contend that they could've slid the Admiral or even Shaq at the PF spot. Laettner...SMH:facepalm:

Just so you know, Olympic bylaws require a minimum of at least one white college player on each team.

If they wanted that they would have picked Shaq. I dont remember how it came about that 1 college player was going to be on the team but it was Laettner b/c he was the white golden boy from Duke. Shaq was clearly the best player in college basketball

No, Malone and Barkley were already at the 4
Shaq said himself on TNT that Laetner was better that year.

Yeah but anyone who watched basketball in 1992 knows he was full of **** when he said that. Laetner barely played and team won every game in a blow out. It was not a postion battle. Shaq was a fresh and Leatner a nationally recon 2 time college champion who happened to be white and from Duke. Everyone who watched hoops knew then that Shaq was better.

Oldmantrash
06-14-2012, 11:32 AM
I hated Laettner, and Duke, but the guy was a great college player.

Obviously not an NBA star, but he was the best college player around.
If you are old enough, you know that.
Don't judge him by his NBA career.

I also think Shac was only a Freshman that year, and Laettner was a graduating Senior.

Laettner had 4 years behind him, Shac was still developing.

Only someone who was too young back then would even question this.

Cheis Webber would be a better case, not Shac.

Yes. I remember all of the back and forth that went on when it was announced that Laettner was going to be on the team.

For those of you who are too young, just think of Laettner as the Tim Tebow of his era of basketball. He had quite a bit of hype surrounding him and folks everywhere loved him. But he wasn't exactly the greatest NBA player.

This....I think it was voted that Laettner due to winning a NCAA championship he should be selected and the fact that Shaq was going to be the #1pick it equalled out.

Nope. They chose to do it, but there was no rule about it at all. They were deciding between Dumars and Laettner.
