Edwin Jackson........Brandon Morrow
2-3, 3.11 ERA.........7-3, 2.90 ERA

http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/mlb/images/team_logos/60x60/was.gif
One night after the Nats exhausted their entire bullpen, Jackson delivered a much-need quality start. In seven innings, Jackson allowed only two earned runs on three hits, while striking out six batters and walking four.

http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/mlb/images/team_logos/60x60/tor.gif
Morrow recorded a two-hit shutout in his last outing against the White Sox. It was his third of the season and fourth of his career. Morrow has now won seven of his past nine starts, and in those victories has posted a sparkling 0.52 ERA.

Chien-Ming Wang........Henderson Alvarez
1-2, 5.11 ERA.........3-5, 3.76 ERA

http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/mlb/images/team_logos/60x60/was.gif
Although Wang allowed just two runs in 5 1/3 innings on Thursday, the numbers are deceiving because he was in trouble in three of those innings. The Mets had the bases loaded in the second and third, but didn't score.

http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/mlb/images/team_logos/60x60/tor.gif
Alvarez surrendered three runs during his last outing against the White Sox. It was the fewest runs he allowed since May 10 against Minnesota, which also happens to be the last time Alvarez earned a victory.

http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_544931.jpg vs http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_475138.jpg
Stephen Strasburg.........Kyle Drabek
7-1, 2.41 ERA........4-6, 4.43 ERA

http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/mlb/images/team_logos/60x60/was.gif
Strasburg pitched six innings Friday, striking out a season-high 13, 10 of which were recorded over his last four innings. Strasburg became the youngest pitcher to strike out 13 hitters at Fenway Park since Roger Clemens in 1986.

http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/mlb/images/team_logos/60x60/tor.gif
While Drabek took a no-decision Friday against the Braves, it was his best start in almost three weeks. Manager John Farrell said he was impressed with how Drabek battled. He has struggled with command and is averaging 6.5 walks per nine innings.

Nationals look to keep rolling along in Toronto

The Nationals sit atop the National League East, but will face a difficult task on Monday night, when they open a three-game Interleague series against the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.

Brandon Morrow takes the mound for Toronto, and scoring runs against the 27-year-old right-hander has proven problematic. He leads the Major Leagues with three shutouts, including a two-hitter on Wednesday against the White Sox.

Morrow almost completely ditched his changeup and curveball against Chicago, to great effect.

"It was all fastball-slider," he said afterward. "I threw a few changeups to the left-handers to keep them honest, but when I have fastball command down to both sides of the plate, that's when I've been at my best, and I had that tonight."

When Morrow has been on, he's been almost unhittable. Over his past nine starts, he has a 0.52 ERA in the seven games he has won.

While Morrow is taking on the Nationals for the first time, Washington starter Edwin Jackson is no stranger to the Blue Jays. Now pitching for his seventh team, the righty has thrown more career innings against Toronto (85) than any other team. He is 3-3 with a 4.34 ERA in 14 games, including 13 starts.

But 10 of those games came before 2009. Current Blue Jays only have 61 total plate appearances against Jackson.

While Jackson has not tossed any shutouts this season, he has reeled off four consecutive quality starts, with a 2.20 ERA in that span. He beat the Mets on Wednesday, giving up two earned runs on three hits in seven innings.

"He's been outstanding," Washington manager Davey Johnson said after the New York game. "He and [Jordan Zimmermann] really haven't had a lot of run support. Jackson has just been exceptional at times. He had probably a little bit of a reputation coming in, that he threw a lot of pitches, he was a little bit wild. But of the starters, he's been as sharp as any of them. His walk total is way down, and his stuff is exceptional."

Nationals: A limited absence
Blue Jays fans should get their first look at Bryce Harper on Monday after the 19-year-old outfielder was held out of the starting lineup on Sunday with lower back tightness.

Johnson called the issue "mostly muscular" and said Harper likely would return after the one-game breather. Bench coach Randy Knorr and head athletic trainer Lee Kuntz informed Johnson about the injury, which seemed to surface on Thursday.

Harper drew a pinch-hit walk in the ninth inning on Sunday, then scored on a double before staying in the game to play right field.

The Nats' sweep of the Red Sox over the weekend not only increased their NL East lead to two games over the Braves, but also pushed them to 35-23. The last time Washington reached 12 games over .500 was in July 2005.

Blue Jays: Bats find a spark
Toronto had scored a combined eight runs while losing three straight games, but broke through with a six-run in a 12-4 victory against the Braves on Sunday.

The Blue Jays start a six-game homestand at Rogers Centre, where they are averaging 5.3 runs per game and are 16-12.

Manager John Farrell said the most important thing is for his players to maintain a consistent approach, but he also expressed openness to trying some small ball.

"There have been times where if we've been unable to get anything going in the first three or four innings of the game, that's where we look to hit and run a little bit to try and create a little action on the basepaths," Farrell said Sunday. "It might hone the focus at the plate a little bit to know you're looking to execute that given pitch, rather than maybe come out of your swing a little bit, get a little bit too big at times."

The Blue Jays have won nine of 15 games against the Nationals since the franchise moved to Washington from Montreal, leaving Toronto as Canada's only team.

Worth noting
This game could provide the first matchup between Jackson and Blue Jays outfielder Colby Rasmus since the two were involved in what amounted to a three-team trade last July. That deal sent Jackson from the White Sox to the Blue Jays, then on to the Cardinals, with Rasmus headed from St. Louis to Toronto. Rasmus is 6-for-10 in his career against Jackson, with a double, two triples and a home run.

Rick Ankiel, Adam LaRoche and Xavier Nady are the only Nationals to have batted against Morrow. They are a combined 2-for-8, with LaRoche having both hits, including a home run.

I would give Alyssa Mylano a very disappointing 30 seconds.

In other news, Jays win 2 of 3, lose against Strasburg but Bautista will hit a bomb off him.

I think Morrow has another strong start and we take game 1. Alvarez could go either way, and Strasburg dominates us. Hoping we take 2 of 3 with a strong outing by Alvarez and Morrow.

If Strasburg k'd the Sox 13 times what is he going to do to the Jays. Good thing its Drabek he matched up against. I like the odds in the first 2 though

we get lucky again and miss 2 of the Nats top 3 pitchers.. couldn't ask for better matchups against the nats although Jackson is no slouch..

Nats are hot but Jays can hit at home.. should be a fun series

Dustin McGowan - S - Blue Jays

The Blue Jays have slowed the pace of Dustin McGowan's rehab program as the right-handed starter continues to battle lingering shoulder discomfort.

"When he's able to even get to the mound is undetermined at this point," manager John Farrell told MLB.com. McGowan might struggle to return before the end of 2012, which makes the two-year extension that Toronto gave him this spring seem all the more silly.

Sergio Santos felt renewed discomfort in his right shoulder after throwing a bullpen session last week.

"Because of that discomfort, which can be normal for a guy ramping back up, we've had to slow him down," Jays manager John Farrell said. Santos has been on the DL since April 22 and remains out indefinitely. Casey Janssen will continue handling Toronto's save chances.

not many good things happening these days

Strasburg will get a career high number of K's against us watch. He will make all Jays hitters look foolish.

I say the Jays lose 2 of 3. But I am obviously hoping they win 2 of 3. Wang isn't anything special... but Alvarez has to be on.

Anything can happen but I have trouble seeing the Jays take even more than one game in this series. That has nothing to do with the Jays and everything to do with the fact that the Nats are steaming hot right now.

I hope the Nats wear some throwback Expos jerseys for one of the games.

Really special this series with my daughter and family in from Miami. Going to be a real treat to watch these games at Rogers with them. Win or lose, we will have a great time, esp. nice than what we went through last year.

Have a great 3 days everyone, will be too busy to get on here, so see you after the series. GO JAYS GO!

No you get criticized for being a garbage lowlife "fan" and demeaning and insulting the Jays for every single thing they do, from Farrell, to the players to AA.

Oh and "whaaa... i thought we're only supposed to say positive things about the Jays" I still didn't say anything negative about the Jays.

again u said they were gonna lose the series.. that is pretty negative imo..

again.. i could say the Jays are the greatest team in the world but they will get swept.. nothing negative there either according to you

I dont care much for runs scored.. i care about the runs scored at the right time.. like the fact that we couldn't get the leading run in from 3rd with 1 out in the late innings in 2 straight games.. we're 3-11 in 1 run games for a reason..

when the games are close, everyone comes up trying to hit a HR which is evident in our team's pathetic averages

the fact remains that this team has so much more potential offensively but it will never be realized as long as Murphy is the hitting coach

I believe he was talking about the Nats.

They only have Zimmerman, Harper, and LaRoche (:puke:)

The guys has a Nats tag and said the opposing lineup (Jays).

I dont care much for runs scored.. i care about the runs scored at the right time..

I don't know how you can argue that the Jays haven't been scoring runs at the right time. The Jays have a 732 OPS overall and a 757 OPS with guys in scoring position. They're clearly hitting better with guys on base.

like the fact that we couldn't get the leading run in from 3rd with 1 out in the late innings in 2 straight games.. we're 3-11 in 1 run games for a reason..

One run games say more about the bullpen than the offence.

when the games are close, everyone comes up trying to hit a HR which is evident in our team's pathetic averages

The Jays have scored at the same pace they did last season. So even though the hits are down the power has more than made up for it. So that's not really the problem.

the fact remains that this team has so much more potential offensively but it will never be realized as long as Murphy is the hitting coach

I'll agree with this to an extent, but the Jays are still the third best offence in the AL. I mean it's tough to complain about that.
