View Full Version : OKC 1st West Team Not Named Lakers/Spurs/Mavs to Make NBA Finals Post-Jordan Era

KB-Pau-DH2012

OKC makes history, first West team not having Duncan's Spurs, Kobe's Lakers or Dirk's Mavs to make the NBA Finals in the 14 yrs Post-Jordan Era.

And last time the franchise made the finals was 1996 as the Seattle Supersonics, when they lost to MJ's Bulls in 6. That Sonics team was led by GP, Kemp, Hersey Hawkins and Detlef Schrempf.

I didn't think they could beat the spurs especially after the 2-0 lead. This team has matured real quick and proved they have what it takes to win it all.

Yup, and these 3 teams are also 3 of the last 4 NBA Champions.

Spurs in 07, Lakers in 09 and 2010, and Mavs in 2011.

If Boston makes it to the finals, OKC will have faced that 4th NBA Champion from 2008.

That's really a testament to how relevant those three teams have been over the past decade. Guys like Kobe, Duncan, Parker, and Dirk have been the center pieces of these teams for years. They are getting older and unless they can inject a shot of talent this summer it will open doors for OKC, Memphis, Clips, and even Minnesota for years to come. Nice solid young players on these squads. Changing of the guard.

Crazy run. Lakers and Spurs have been to what? 11 combined? Sick.

Congrats to the Thunder! New blood out west

Nice to see some new blood in there, I doubt this will be a one and done, a new franchise is emerging. Most of all, it's a small market team, so it shows they can do it as well with good drafting and coaching. I have been rooting for them, but I think after a couple of titles I will get tired of them and end up turning on them.

Not sure how this is credited to the Thunder? In my eyes this just shows how amazing the Lakers, Spurs and little bit Dallas have been the past decade.

Congrats Thunder!! Still some Sonic green on that squad. Hope Durant can go head to head with Lebron but if the Heat choke, I will be even happier. Celtics vs Thunder would be sweet!

End of an era... Or is it. You know Dallas, LA, and San Antonio will be back. Those franchises are too smart and big to lay down to the Thunder. They will all be back with a vengeance next year. They will all improve and get younger.

its crazy how the lakers and spurs have dominated WC the last decade.

lakers 2000
lakers 2001
lakers 2002
spurs 2003
pistons 2004 (beat lakers)
spurs 2005
heat 2006 (beat mavs)
spurs 2007
celtics 2008 (beat lakers)
lakers 2009
lakers 2010
mavs 2011
thunder vs ??? 2012

Over the last 13 years the lakers and spurs have represented the West 11 times (7 for LA and 4 for SA), and have won it 9. Thats incredible.

Lakers and Spurs have dominated the West. Next year Lakers will be back on point to win a championship.

Now it's gonna be a long time before a team not named Spurs, Mavs, Lakers or Thunder come out of the West. Thunder are gonna dominate the west for a while IMO.

I'm betting against that. Other teams are going to improve too. Sooner or later all the egos in OKC will show up too. It seems like they are build to win multiple championships but we've seen so many teams fall and fail before, teams about which many ppl said exactly the same. You never know in sports, from injuries (ask Portland) to money-grubbing persons who don't love the game and wining truly - much can happen and change really quick. We'll see but yeah, I do hope they can win a few titles. They deserve it.

They have to keep their core first.

Durant, westy, harden and ibaka are all in their rookies contracts.

Do you really think, they'll all re-sign for cheap???

Be serious man.

Looks like the torch has been passed. I did not see OKC winning this series, let alone when they went down 0-2; They seem to have it all. Congrats to a great team on making it to the NBA Finals. They're worthy, and humble.

IF they pull it off, it will go down as one of the more remarkable playoff runs in NBA history - maybe the most - regardless of who they face in the Finals (you could only make that statement if it was Miami V. Boston in the ECF).

I cannot wait for the finals.

Story belongs to Seattle, to the green and gold and to the Sonics.

This. I wouldn't count out the Lakers or Spurs anytime soon. Talk about two franchises who know how to build teams.

That being said, OKC is the beast out west now. Great job by the Thunder, great team.

Kobe Bryant Playoff Statistics- 2000-2002

57 Games, 25.3 PPG, 44 percent FG, 6.9 RPG, 5.1 APG

Shaquille O'Neal Playoff Statistics- 2000-2002

58 Games, 29.2 PPG, 55 percent FG, 14.1 RPG, 3.1 APG

Yeah you're right, it was only Shaq's team. Yup.

As if no one remembers that Shaq couldn't have the ball in crunchtime because of the Hack-a-Shaq routine.. As if no one remembers that Kobe had the ball in his hands every time at the end of games..

We should just call it Phil's Lakers, because neither of them would be anything without the great Phil Jackson and the triangle offense.

Phil tells Kobe and Shaq both: "You're Welcome"

Thunder better win it now while they can and have HCA especially since Harden will probably want a max contract.
