View Full Version : Who's game does Paul Pierce resemble?

oballers

Pierce has such a unique style of play that it is hard for me to really put my finger on who's game he is most similar to. He doesn't play with flow or grace or power, yet he makes shots and scores at a tremendous clip. He doesn't have a natural 3 pt shooters stroke, yet he hits with regularity from wherever. He is Mr. Clutch and the king of awkward shots but not in the way that Manu Ginobili is.

Two players that come to mind are Dan Majerle and Glen Rice. But he plays so much like an SG that Wesley Person, Steve Smith, Reggie Miller and maybe even the best fit of all is Mitch Richmond

When your trying toexplain someones game to another person, comparisons can help. Especially if that other person is older... But you all are right he is unique, its really the way he plays in that 6.7 235 frame. Most people his size player don't play on the perimeter as much as he does nor do they have as good ball handling skills.

He kind of reminds me of Adrian Dantley, who was an unorthodox type of player, but was a hell of a scorer. Pierce is better than Dantley, but they have similar styles.

I think we play some of our best ball when pierce is takin it to the hoop and gettin to the line. He's not the quickest but can definitely drive it, especially when his jumpers on and the defense is playing him tight.

ever hear the saying give him an inch and hes gone? pierce is this. all he needs is an inch to get his shot off. when he drives, he doesn't need to get by you. if he gets even your screwed because hes so big and strong and he uses his body to shield better than anyone. he is the smoothest, saviest and his foot work is one of the most efficient ever. there is never a wasted step when peirce has the ball. if he gets you to so much as lean a certain way or somewhat hesitate he has enough room to burn you.

pierce plays like no1. he is the truth

He plays slow on purpose. I thought he really was the slowest player in the league for the longest time. I think he plays slow to keep his balance especially with the kind of pullup jumpers and fadeaways he shoots all the time.

Now, if were talking slow, we've got to mention Aaron Gray lol. Now he's slow. Looks like he's got cement shoes on lol.

I think Pierce's game is too unique to remind me of another player. Looks like he's taken small pieces of other player's game and put it into his own. Like Durant taking Dirk's one legged fadeaway...

Billl Simmons had an article all about Paul Pierce where he talks about his uniqueness as a player:

http://www.grantland.com/blog/the-triangle/post/_/id/26601/the-truth-the-whole-truth-and-nothing-but-the-truth

Homerism aside:

"After Paul Pierce single-handedly won Game 2 of the Atlanta series, a friend of mine e-mailed, "Has there ever been anyone quite like Pierce?"

The short answer: No.

The long answer is a little more fun. Statistically, there's never been a wing player like him. In the regular season, he's already played 37,785 minutes (39th all-time), scored 22,591 points (30th), averaged 22 points a game (30th), grabbed 6,164 rebounds (150th), dished out 3,935 assists (100th), tallied 1,499 steals (40th), earned a 20.7 PER (52nd), submitted a 27.8 percent usage rate (19th), accumulated 131.2 win shares (34th), made 6,101 free throws (17th) and drained 1,679 3-pointers (ninth). The first number (minutes) and the last two (free throws and 3s) explain Pierce's career better than anything: He's one of the finest, most durable inside/outside offensive players ever, and that's before you factor in his career shooting splits (45% FG, 37% 3FG, 81% FT). He also hasn't been a slouch in the postseason: In 116 playoff games (and counting), he's averaged 39.6 minutes (33rd), 21.4 points (34th) and 6.5 rebounds (117th) with 43/35/83 shooting splits, making 190 3s (11th) and 714 free throws (24th) and even winning a Finals MVP (in 2008). Combining the regular season and playoffs, Pierce could approach 45,000 total minutes by the end of Boston's current playoff run. With no sign of slowing down."

He used to penetrate a lot. He averaged between 8 and 10 free throws a game in his best days.

I've always loved Pierce's game. He's compensates for a lack of athleticism and explosiveness with a physicality and ruggedness most players at his position don't have. Especially not offensively. He picks his spots on the floor extremely well. He's an inspiration to aspiring wing players who don't have exceptional explosiveness or athleticism, though Pierce was not a shabby athlete in his younger years.

i've seen it a couple times already in this thread and it kinda drive me nuts. pierce isnt really thaaaat slow. it seems like he is but he's not. he plays slow/controlled. but he himself isnt "slow." if he was, he wouldnt be able to take james/iguodola off the dribble at times.

as far as comparisons go, i compare him to.....paul pierce. he's got his own unique style. i see a lot of pierce in james harden. harden isnt as big as pierce but he plays in a similar way as far as being under control when he drives moves.

I know Pierce is older with a better career and different position but I always thought he and Brandon Roy had similar type games. Both were not quicker than whoever was guarding them but would always get to the spot they want to get to and thrive in the midrange. They got their with hesitation stutters, head fakes, shoulder fakes, and straight bball smarts.
