Ricky Romero........Philip Humber
6-1, 4.04 ERA.........2-2, 5.37 ERA

http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/mlb/images/team_logos/60x60/tor.gif
Romero walked a season-low one batter during his previous start but still hasn't found the form that made him the Blue Jays' ace in 2011. He allowed four runs against Baltimore and hasn't thrown more than six innings since May 2, at Texas.

http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/mlb/images/team_logos/60x60/cws.gif
Chicago has won each of Humber's last three starts, though he's recorded just one decision in that span. Humber has allowed two runs or fewer in three of his last four starts, lowering his ERA from 6.83 to 5.37.

Brandon Morrow........Jose Quintana
6-3, 3.28 ERA.........1-0, 1.69 ERA

http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/mlb/images/team_logos/60x60/tor.gif
Morrow survived a scare during his last start when he was struck on the right leg by a line drive off the bat of Baltimore's Wilson Betemit. Toronto originally feared the worst, but X-rays came back negative and he was diagnosed with a contusion.

http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/mlb/images/team_logos/60x60/cws.gif
White Sox starter Jose Quintana allowed one run and one hit in 3 2-3 innings in the White Sox 4-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. Quintana was ejected by plate umpire Mark Wegner with two outs in the fourth when he threw a pitch behind Ben Zobrist, but looked solid in his brief appearance. The left-hander is allowing a batting average of only .115 in 15 1/3 innings this season.

http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_506693.jpg vs http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_408241.jpg
Henderson Alvarez........Jake Peavy
3-5, 3.75 ERA.........6-1, 3.05 ERA

http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/mlb/images/team_logos/60x60/tor.gif
Alvarez's struggles continued during his last start against Boston. The second-year righty surrendered four runs on eight hits while striking out just two in 6 1/3 innings. Alvarez has now allowed at least four runs in each of his past three starts.

http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/mlb/images/team_logos/60x60/cws.gif
Peavy took a no-hitter into the fifth inning Friday, when Seattle's Justin Smoak broke it up on a pop fly that fell in front of home plate. Peavy allowed just three hits and two runs in 6 1/3 innings in a no-decision.

Romero faces stiff challenge with surging White Sox

Toronto's schedule is not getting any easier as the club, which just finished a six-game homestand against the Orioles and Red Sox, is set to embark on a six-game road trip starting in Chicago and concluding in Atlanta.

The Blue Jays went 4-2 against their division rivals, but may be facing an even tougher test against the White Sox -- one of the hottest teams in baseball.

Detroit was seen as a clear-cut favorite to win the American League Central in 2012, if not run away with it, but after roughly one-third of the season complete, it's the White Sox sitting atop the standings.

Chicago has won 10 of its past 11 games and has exceeded much of the expectations placed on the club at the onset of the year. The only thing slowing the White Sox right now is that a couple players are dealing with illness, so they are just hoping to have everyone ready to go on Tuesday.

"It's happened the last couple days," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "We have some guys under the weather. Guys will suck it up and go out there. Some won't be able to, but most of them will."

The White Sox will send Philip Humber to the mound and he will face a Blue Jays team he has a 3.24 ERA but no decisions against.

Humber will be up against Blue Jays ace Ricky Romero, who has allowed four runs in back-to-back outings, but is coming off a win against Baltimore. Romero has been plagued with control issues all season, but walked just one in his last start and wants to start turning in the results that is expected of a front-of-the-rotation arm.

"I've been hard on myself this whole year, the guys have kind of told me to tone down a little bit and get that confidence back up, but I expect so much of myself and work so hard," said Romero, who has a 4.04 ERA. "I'm my worst critic and I'm always going to be like that. I'm a competitor and I like to win. I hate losing. Getting back on my own side and just kind of finding it on my own. The coaches can only do so much and talk to me about it, but it's on me to go out there and do it."

White Sox: Sale dominating
• White Sox starter Chris Sale was named the American League Pitcher of the Month for May on Sunday, after going 4-1 with a league-best 1.71 ERA over six games in the month.

Sale, who made five starts and one relief appearance in May, pitched through the seventh inning in each of his last three outings, including a career-high 15-strikeout performance against the Rays on May 28. He is also coming off a complete-game victory over Seattle on Sunday, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out seven.

Sale has won his last four starts and allowed just four runs over that stretch, while striking out 36 batters in 28 2/3 innings.

• Second baseman Gordon Beckham has picked up right where he left off in May after hitting just .153 with two RBIs and no homers in April.

Beckham, who hit .261 with five homers and 12 RBIs in May, extended his hitting streak to 10 games on Sunday and has hits in 14 of his last 15 games. The 25-year-old is hitting .308 with three home runs and eight RBIs over his current streak.

Blue Jays: Guerrero close to joining Toronto?
• Vladimir Guerrero made his debut for Triple-A Las Vegas on Saturday night by going 1-for-5 with a double and just missed a home run to straightaway center field in his first at-bat.

Guerrero went 9-for-20 with four homers and eight RBIs in four games with Class A Dunedin before getting a promotion to the Pacific Coast League. If Guerrero keeps hitting, the probability of him joining the Blue Jays soon are quite possible.

Guerrero appeared in 145 games with the Orioles last season and hit .290 with 13 home runs, 63 RBIs and a career-low .733 OPS.

• Jose Bautista has homered in back-to-back games, giving him 14 on the season to go along with 37 RBIs. Both totals are second on the team to Edwin Encarnacion, who has 17 and 43, respectively.

Tough series with the WhiteSox....Peavy has been very good this year and their bats have been racking up the runs of late.

Jays take 2/3

Tough series, but I have a feeling that the White Sox winning streak is going to fall. These streaks only last for so long. Either way, its not going to be an easy series for Toronto.

Lately, we have done well against the White Sox, even when we are in their ballpark. The only game I can see us losing is the finale, Alvarez has done well, but Jake Peavy has done very well this year.

You also have to take into consideration that the White Sox are 5-6 against the AL East right now, even with Chicago's recent sweep of the Rays, I still feel good about the Jays getting 2 of these games.

I`m still concerned which Romero shows up from 1 game to the next. And I also think that Alverez is getting more hittable without more than 2 pitches to offer. I hope that we win 2, but the most winnable game to me is game 2. But I think if our bats come alive we could win all 3. Really tough to call.

Quintana is a lefty with an average fastball. If anything we should be writing that game off as a loss right now.

Wow. Looks about as close as one could imagine to a lineup that 'The Book' would suggest. Only difference being the old-school best player in the 3-spot approach. But some of our best hitters in the 1, 2, 4 spots. Escobar isn't great in the 5-hole, but declining bats from 6-9. Decent attempt to split the L/R. Strategic speed in the 9-hole. Kudos for trying something new, Farrell.

I guess under the circumstances, it works.

Id rather have Rajai Davis leading off. I know its not the most popular decision due to his low on base percentage, but Id rather have him on base with 1 or 2 out with Jose Bautista batting. I know Lawrie is pretty fast too, but Id rather have him batting in front of Bautista. Arencibia fits well batting fifth.

Lets just see how well this lineup works, maybe itll be better than I figure.

06-05-2012, 05:52 PM
Certainly something different. But what the hell, if we win then it'll be interesting whats next if EE is ready tomorrow.
Rasmus's best bats have come in the 2 hole, esp. good now that Bautista seems to be heating up.

This took some imagination, which leads me to believe that Farrell didn't put this together on his own.

Lavy16
06-05-2012, 06:27 PM
I think Farrell was listening to some of the recent draft picks made by AA and decided to follow suit. He put all the players names into a hat and pulled them out one by one. Hopefully it works

It's different

No, it's terrible.

The guy leading off has the worst plate discipline on the team (Lawrie). He doesn't walk, he doesn't get on base. That's not a guy to lead off with. He's leading off because he runs fast, and that's basically the Corey Patterson approach.

The guy batting fifth is a groundball hitting machine. That's fine when he's in a position where nobody is on base and he can take advantage of his on base skills and plate discipline (first) but it's not good from a spot where power is expected (fifth). It's basically guaranteeing that with guys on we'll get a double play once or twice out of Escobar. Or that we'll hit and run, and if the hit & run isn't successful we'll have a CS.

I have no problem with KJ cleaning up, and I have no problem with Rasmus second. But Lawrie batting first and Escobar batting fifth is about as smart...or should I say different, as batting Bautista 9th.

Lawrie has the highest average on the team.

Lawrie has the highest average on the team.

Ok...but I said he has one of the worst plate disciplines on the team. And he has the second worst BB% of any of the regulars. And he places fifth in OBP.

Which is a good reason why we shouldn't judge people by batting average. Despite having a 30 point BA lead over Yunel Escobar, his OBP is only 10 points higher.

Which is why he shouldn't be used in a spot where getting on base is key. IE, batting first.

Ignoring stats, lawrie is a spark plug hustle player. It could be good for him and the lineup having him bat first.

Who would be better? KJ and Escobar have been pretty bad. Davis? Yuck. Maybe Rasmus, I guess? Having lawrie first is worth a try because it's good having him get up there and get a lot of at bats every game.

Why not right.

Maybe this new role in the batting order will help Lawrie take a new approach at the plate...maybe he isn't such a free swinger...or maybe JF is just an idiot

I'm not sure this line up is about making sence but trying something different and maybe seeing how Lawrie and Rasmus hook up in front of Bautista than Johnson and Escobar. Maybe AA is looking at something that may lead to a move he maybe considering. Such as a possible future trade. Just thinking out loud.
I'm fairly certain Ventura looked at the line up and scratched his head, and said "WTF are they up to"

Tonight. He's swinging at everything. The first AB he swung at a bunch of pitches out of the zone, and he did the same thing in the next AB.

not sure you watched the 1st AB.. swung and fouled the first pitch then took 3 pitches before swinging at strike 3-1 which he fouled.. then he took a close pitch for ball 4 and an RBI... he had a great ab

I watched the at bat and it was terrible. Humber was struggling to throw strikes, so he swung at the first pitch he saw out of the zone. Then he swung at the 3-1 pitch, again, out of the zone.

Against a guy who had absolutely no control of the ball.

That's not a good at bat. A struggling pitcher and the first thing he does is swing at a high pitch, and then do it again on ball 4 (fouling it off).

Certainly impressed with the early part of the lineup. I thought having Lawrie leadoff was going to be a mistake, but if Rasmus and Lawrie can hit like that in front of Bautista, youve got to play the lineup like that until it fails to produce hits. A 5 for 5 day for Rasmus is impressive, you dont see it too often.

Romero is still a little shaky, at least we got 7 innings out of him, and got the win on top of it.

In series where the Jays won the first game of the series they are 11-7 with the only loss in said series' against the rays. In series where they lose teh first game they are 1-7. Yea stop smoking whatever your smoking. Ill take an opening win on the road any time and using this extremly small sample size i would think its a good thing.

Great game offensively last night. As for the D it was extremely sketchy, from the Davis bobble, Romero not covering 2nd base, Rasmus dropped ball, Lawrie calling for that moon shot pop up and Vizquel having to cone catch it last second, to Lawrie bailing on a play cutting in front of Escobar. Hopefully that was just a one night stand for that racket and they tighten up tonight. That being said I really enjoyed the look of lineup with Lawrie and Rasmus at 1-2. Watching Lawrie run the bases is a treat, he is a beast on the basepaths and I would love to see a close play at the plate where he destroys a catcher!
