View Full Version : Players should receive a 7th foul if the game goes to OT.

Coaches get 3 extra timeouts already, so I think players should get a 7th foul -they are playing for 5 extra minutes.

and really, losing the best scorers from both teams made this OT less exciting. watching lebron and pierce go at it in OT again would have been great.

If anything give a seventh foul to players who haven't already fouled out. If you foul out in regulation, you're done. But honestly, leave it like it is.

I agree with this (only if the player hasn't fouled out yet. If you foul out before overtime, you can't obviously expect to come back in.). You have your fouls planned out for the most part during 48 mins and use them when needed (as with timeouts and they get extra TOs when in overtime).

Uh no. They shouldn't even have a 6th foul.

I always thought this way. NBA should look into it.

I like it, as long as you're still out of the game if you foul out in regulation. If you have five going into overtime, and then get a 6th in overtime, I like you're idea.

That's not a bad idea.

Uh no. They shouldn't even have a 6th foul.

Then lower the foul limit to 5 and have the 6th one for overtime. Point is that fouls for some are a strategy and if they use them up in the late seconds of the 4th to try and win, only for the game to go into overtime, they are screwed. Like others have said, coaches uses timeouts as strategy and burns through them, only to get more in overtime. So why can't players get an extra foul?

You get 6 fouls for 48 mins. Extra time screws up any strategy they had with the fouls.

what about double or triple overtime games do you get an extra foul for each overtime ?

There should be a law for players like Hawes, Joel Anthony and McRoberts can use 8 fouls so they can actually be useful for damn once:laugh2:

Technical fouls should count toward your 6. You'd see a lot less jawing at officials, I bet.

Pretty decent idea. I'm not sure the league would change it though. Players rarely foul out of games anyways.

I think it should be after 2 ot's you get an extra because when the game goes that long it becomes who can foul out less

as with most things, JVG is correct.

What they need to do is stop making all those sissy calls. This is a man's game and should be played as such.
There's no need for a 7th foul if they go back to calling it like NBA basketball not WNBA.

EXACTLY WHAT I WAS SAYING YESTERDAY.. It's stupid that they don't already have it in place. My dad said that's part of the game though, part of the fighting for the victory

They already have a 2 technical foul limit. No way it should go to personal fouls.

I think it's a good idea, but also a bad one.

I think 6 is fair, but if you foul out in regulation, you can't come back in OT.

I was going to come in here saying no way, but I kind of like the idea of giving them an extra foul if they made it to OT without fouling out.

Much more exciting, JVG mentioned this during the game and I agree. You want the best out there especially in OT.

7 fouls it too much.

However, I wouldn't mind if the Coaches were granted ONE foul to give for each OT. IE, they can erase ONE foul on a player of their choice.

This would add a tactical element, allow them to get a star out of foul trouble, or to "eat" a single bad foul.

So, in last night's game, Doc could have used his "save" and kept Pierce in the game. Same with Spoelstra and Lebron.

This wouldn't encourage crazy fouling in the OT and it would also make the refs less of a factor in terms of foul outs.

or how about the refs stop calling so many ticky tack and garbage fouls to begin with.

Agreed. Keep the best players on the court. No one wants to watch Marquis Daniels and other scrubs like him play in an OT game.

I think players should just learn to play with fouls and not waste them. It goes into the strategy of the game. Win in regulation or deal with pressures of the desperation quarter.

Why does this have to come up when Lebron fouls out? Seriously, he hasn't fouled out since '08 so now people are concerned about him knocking himself out of one overtime?

JC_
06-05-2012, 02:36 PM
I was thinking about it but I don't think it would make a better game overall. Game 4 of Miami - Boston for example, the only reason Lebron fouled out was because the refs are ******** and gave him a couple ridiculous fouls earlier on in the game. Fix the crappy officiating and it really wouldn't be an issue.

No because as a few have already said, there shouldn't even be a 6th foul. Basically they're getting an extra foul anyway, so I don't see why they should get another one. Fouls make coaches actually have to use strategy, and with this rule it would make everything too easy. Pass.
