The Red Sox have committed approximately $108MM to next year's payroll. (without arbitration figures)

I guess arbitration will sap about $25M and the big case are ($12M Ellsbury), Bailey ($5M), would you consider dealing him? It's a cheap price if he could get through the season. Those are the only two big cases.

Ortiz re-upped and no way they offer arbitration again.

I want to keep Ellsbury, ****ing shame we gave so much $ to Crawford.

I don't see huge issues there, honestly. I think the arbitration numbers are a bit low (closer to $35M than $25M) and the current FAs won't have that big an impact.

FA's
Byrd, Dice-K, Jenks, Cook, Shoppach, Podsednik: Not re-signed
Youk: Traded if possible, option not picked up
Ross, Padialla: Depends on price
Ortiz: Probably gets the $25M/2yrs he wanted this past offseason.
DMac: Gone

Arb cases
Albers: Gone (replaced by Workman)
Repko: Gone (replaced by Kalish)
DMac: Gone (replaced by Nava)
Morales: Gone (I suspect the experiment is over with Miller emerging as a solid MR/SU)
Tazawa: $600K
Miller: $2M
Aviles: $3M
Aceves: $3M
Bard: $3M
Bailey: $5.5M
Ellsbury: $12M
Sweeney: $3.5M
Hill: $1.5M

The problem is your paying Ellsbury 20 million for 2011 and lets see him at least make the allstar game again. He never hit more then 12 homers in a year prior to it and may not after it I wouldn't commit that money to a one year fluke. Its like paying Beckett 22 million because of what he did in 2007 which would be crazy. At least 16 million not the going rate for a ace.

Ellsbury is being paid $8M this year.

Trade Crawford to LA and eat 5 mil a year. Thats what we need to do.

I would offer Ortiz the 12.5 Million it takes to get 2 draft picks and if he accepts you get him for another year. Seems like a win-win to me.

If I'm not mistaken, the new CBA changed the whole draft pick process.

I believe it is you offer the average of the top 100 salaries, then the player has 7 days to accept. If not you get a Supp 1st and either a 1st or 2nd. And there are less protected picks now also if I am not mistaken.

If the player is offered a contract of $12.5M or more AND signs with another AND qualifies for Type A compensation then you get Type A compensation. Type B has been eliminated.

I don't know that there is a rule regarding how long the player has to accept.
