View Full Version : Draft Order Suggestion

What if the draft order was determined by the most wins AFTER a team is eliminated from the playoffs?

Or possibly just an extra ping pong ball for each win after you are eliminated?

This would encourage all teams to play hard through the end of the season, and would give an edge to the teams that are eliminated earlier who presumably need more help.

Thats intriguing

It is an interesting idea. I've heard it suggested before on radio stations regarding other sports as well. To be honest I have no idea how it would work, but I like the concept behind it.

My instinct is to suggest teams will adapt to it similarly as they've adapted to the current rule, but I have a hard time thinking of too many examples of how teams coulds still purposefully try and get a high pick. (ie. One thought is if a star player is on the IR early in the season, his injuries could get milked for a longer period of time until the team is close to, or already eliminated before getting activated).

My other concern is that certain teams will lose and continue to lose for a long time to the point where they may not be able to keep the franchise (ie. a Charlotte situation - they have such a brutal roster, a market disadvantage, they are low budget and still can't win games at the end of the season if they try, so they can't get out of the rut). This makes me think it is unlikely an idea like this will ever be implemented.

Finally, it puts pressure on fair scheduling. Although I guess that would in theory even out the more years into the system we go. But lottery teams having a favourable schedule towards the end of the season get ousted from playoffs earlier due to a tough early schedule, meanwhile get to face inferior competition later for an advantage in jocking for lottery position.

Those are rambling thoughts. Overall I don't mind the crux of the idea - as tanking is an annoying problem to have.

Pretty interesting. Would theoretically eliminate tanking and create some interesting battles down the stretch.

If continuing with the lottery they need to make it simple 15 balls for dead last, 14, 13 and so on. Also do it LIVE on TV so the world can see it. How hard can that be.

Not that much incentive to tank in the end if it just means one ball.

Just do what the NFL does.

I don't see why teams should be punished for tanking. It sucks, but it's the only way bad teams get good in the NBA these days.

bobcats are bad and will never be a good team ...

Bottom 3 teams have a mini-lottery, equally weighted. Teams 4-10 have a mini-lottery, with the worst team having 14 ping pong balls, then 12, 10, etc. Teams 11-14 stay where they should. There is NO WAY a team should jump 12 spots and get a top pick.
