The 25-year-old Hunter has struggled of late, allowing four earned runs or more in three of his last four outings. He hasn't won since April 24.

Hutchison allowed a season-high six runs during his last start against the Rays. He surrendered seven hits in a season-low four innings, but didn't walk a batter for just the second time this year. He allowed two runs in his first start vs. the O's.

Romero issued a career-high seven walks during his last start against Tampa Bay. He continues to be plagued by a lack of command and is averaging 5.1 walks per nine innings. Despite the high total, Romero has six quality starts in 10 outings.

Blue Jays eye turnaround vs. first-place Orioles

The American League East is more tightly contested than usual thanks to the rise of the Orioles this season, but they could help separate themselves atop the division in a big three-game set with the Blue Jays starting Monday at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Baltimore, surprisingly, is tied for first in the AL East with the Rays and is five games ahead of the fourth-place Blue Jays. The series in Toronto begins a nine-game trip against division foes, with three-game sets against the Rays and Red Sox to follow.

Both the Blue Jays and Orioles are struggling, as Toronto dropped a season-high fifth in a row Sunday, while Balitmore has lost its past two series and is 2-5 in its past seven games.

The two clubs have have met twice this season, most recently last month in Baltimore, where the Orioles swept Toronto. Overall, Baltimore has won five of six contests vs. its division rival.

The Blue Jays return home after going 1-5 over a six-game road trip and face an Orioles team that is 15-6 away from Camden Yards for the best the best road winning percentage (.714) in the Majors.

Manager Buck Showalter has been credited as a major reason for the Orioles' turnaround. Baltimore is a respectable 132-135 since Showalter took over midseason in 2010. But the 56-year-old, who has brought the team from cellar dweller to contender, is quick to point out that the franchise's revitalization is not all about him.

"We have a lot of people involved here who have a stake in the Orioles doing well," Showalter said. "There's a connection to the town and the city and the people and the struggles. There's a burn there, but it's challenging as well. We've got three-fourths of the season left."

Like Showalter, Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista knows there's a lot of season left and is trying to stay positive after his club's difficult road trip.

"I wouldn't dwell on it too much," Bautista said. "It was just a bad road trip. It's happened before and it will happen again. We just have to go home and focus on who we have coming in and try to beat them.

"To me, this road trip or any other road trip is no measuring stick for how the rest of the season is going to go. Again, those games are over, we can't go back in time and change them. We just have to win tomorrow [Monday] night."

Rookie Drew Hutchison, who is coming off the worst start of his young career, will get the ball for Toronto, while Baltimore counters with Tommy Hunter, who picked up a victory over the Blue Jays at Baltimore on April 24.

Hunter limited Toronto to three hits on one run while tossing six innings in the win. That was the last time, however, that Hunter has been victorious. In five starts since, he's 0-1 and has allowed at least four runs in three of his past four starts.

Hutchison also faced the Orioles this season -- in his second big league start on April 26 -- and logged five innings in a no-decision. He hasn't lasted more than six innings this season and allowed a career-high six earned runs his last time out against the Rays.

Blue Jays: Overused bullpen leads to roster moves
Toronto called up right-handers Jesse Chavez and Chad Beck from Triple-A Las Vegas after its bullpen was forced to pitch 13 2/3 innings during the first two games of its series with Texas.

Chavez impressed in his debut with the Blue Jays after relieving starter Kyle Drabek in the fourth inning. The 28-year-old threw five innings, allowing three runs while striking out seven and walking none. He recorded five consecutive punchouts at one point.

To make room for Chavez and Beck, Toronto optioned utility man Yan Gomes to Vegas, while right-hander Ryota Igarashi was designated for assignment.

J.P. Arencibia clubbed two homers in Sunday's series finale against Texas, taking over as the Major League leader among all catchers with nine.

Orioles: Jones continues hitting
Adam Jones extended his hitting streak to a career-high 18 games with a double in the fifth inning of Sunday's loss to Kansas City.

The center fielder, who is among the AL leaders in nearly every major offensive category, signed a six-year contract extension worth $85.5 million before the game.

Jones, a 2009 All-Star and Gold Glove winner, is batting .308 with 14 home runs and a .944 OPS.

Sunday's loss to the Royals dropped the Orioles to 22-3 in games in which their pitcher throws a quality start.

Worth noting
Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis had success against Hutchison the only time he faced him, going 3-for-3 with a double.

Hunter has held Bautista to a .182 average (4-for-22) and .432 OPS with no home runs lifetime.

I think we win the 1st 2 and the 3rd is a toss up. But I guess that depends on which Romero shows up. But I think we NEED to win at least 2 of 3. And with Boston right behind us, that series will be as important to win as this one. Hoping for 4 of 6.

Got to be a lefty/ righty thing, or they want him for long relief, cause Becks numbers as a 1 -2 inning guy are way better than Laffey.

This is what drives you nuts watching the Jays. Every other team is lighting these guys up, they'll look like a 25 year old Pedro Martinez against us... Then we'll walk 47 guys and make their hitters look like they have the best eyes since Ted Williams.

We could definitely use a sweep here to get back on track. Now looking at the numbers we've played well against the O's at home (our home record vs. them since '05 is downright hilarious) so I'm hoping for more of the same through this series.

Hammel has shut down a lot of teams this year dude. Not sure what your problem is with him.

Hammel's mediocre track record prior is what bothers not only him, but the most of us. Hammel should be getting hammered by all AL East opponents IMO. So either Hammel is a very, very good pitcher, or the Jays offense just simply sucks.

I agree, he does have a very mediocre track record, but he seems way more confident in his pitches, and his stuff just looks so much better than it did in Colorado. He has also mentioned that his conditioning is a lot better due to the coaches once he got here.

Arrieta is actually dominant at times, but than the following start he struggles with command, just really inconsistent. All depends on who shows up. Hunter on the other hand is terrible. Luckily Britton should be back this week which will move Hunter to possibly the bullpen.

Does anybody PLEASE have a solid reason why Snider hasn't been called up even once this year when people like cooper, gomes, that DH guy that just got injured and even Thames continues to get chances??? I realize he plays the field but isn't he hitting the ball well this year and couldn't he play 1st at the very least? I'm surprised we haven't given him another chance, unless I'm missing something... Am I??

He's been injured for several weeks now.

He injured his wrist & is still on the DL. Also playing him at 1st base would be a terrible idea, he would easily be our 2nd best outfielder on this club.

Its his wrist, he re-aggravated it a few weeks ago and took himself out of the game. No surgery though, so doesn't sound too serious, but wrist injuries usually zap power for a bit.

Hutchison is having another good start. thats 3 of the last 4 where he has gone at least 6 giving up only 1 run. The BB are definitely not a good thing but he has definitely shown he is capable of getting guys out here in the majors. He is bound to get better as the season progresses.

He now has a 3.89 xFIP on the season and with the BABIP leveling off to league average he is looking alot better.

Good summary.
Watching Rasmus patrol CF reminds me of the Devo days. They both have long lanky frames and cover a lot of ground. The O potential he has is just a nice bonus.
I enjoy watching Vizquel play the game. Need to get the man some HGH to help hold off father time so we can enjoy him past this year.

I been a huge supporter of Rasmus this year, even when he was providing zero offence his defence still made him a valuable player. Now he's coming round with the bat he's a potential star.

In the last week his wOBA is 0.471, good for 20th best in all of baseball. EE is at 0.460 and is about 25th in all baseball.

Just for good measure, Eric Thames is 182nd out of 184 qualified players and is also providing zero defense so it might be time to end this and send for Snider.

nice to have someone else praising Colby... some guys are already trowing him out when he is slumping. I can see alot of room for improvement.. Ive watched almost all game this year and I say he is really hitting the ball well.. Someone got a stat on him that says he has a great line drive % that isnt just falling for him. And agree his defense alone should be enough for him to stay on the lineup.

Great game overall. Great call by John Farrell on giving coco the ball in 6-0 game. yeah i know he isnt good but he has to pitch and thats a perfect opportunity to not waste other arms (used a bit of Casey though).

With bomber i like the dude he makes awesome post BUT when you are on gamethread its prolly better to ignore what he says so that you wont feel as negative as my current bank account. He is an emotional fan that just wants to win. :)

Last nights line up was pretty scary too, but the bottom 3 really came through.

Nice bounce back game, and Hutch looked solid, his best outing so far IMHO.

And whats with Bautista and Hunter, has he got some incemenating photos of Joey, only guy not to get a hit. Now he's 4 for 26 against this guy.

I hope he gets it going, because at times he seems to be the weak link in that top 4. Yet he's;

tied for 1st on the team in walks
3rd. in OBP
3rd. in OPS

Johnsons bat was great but he sure was hobbling out there. I would assume McCoy will start at 2nd.?

And then there was Cordero, don't use this much but

Hoping for a repeat performance here tonight, that is if Romero is on.

bartron_44
05-29-2012, 03:52 PM
I still don't understand why we didn't bring up Gose or Hech instead of McCoy....

It is nice to see Colby heating up and playing like we all hoped he would since we got him last year. He is on fire over his past 8 games, and it appears moving closer to the plate has really helped him drive the ball more consistently. He has been squaring it up a lot this season, but just recently has he really started to drive the ball for extra bases. Hopefully this isn't just a small hot streak, and he has really found something that can work for him for an extended period of time.

He has been a pretty streaky hitter since 2010, and those streaks a re usually about a month long. He was foolish in April,June and Sept with an OPS over .910 and as high as 1.171 in those months..but then not so hot in May,July and August. So he basically flip flopped back and forth between great months and bad months that entire season. In 2011 he started out with a great April and followed it up with a pretty solid May, but and then fell off the map for the final 4 months of the season, and continued to struggle the first month and a half of 2012.

After 5 and a half months of slumping, hopefully he can give us 3 or 4 straight months of great performance now to balance it out :) (fingers crossed) If he could do that, he could be a legit LF prospect and let us bring up Gose to play CF :)

He never was not is he right now. People who get paid in the organization and outside the organization have never mentioned him as anything but a bench player. Sure they could be wrong but its fairly rare that they are. There ios a reason why he has never been a top 20 lists and such. Minor league stats are very very misleading.

Lead off hit, cash him in.
