http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_477003.jpg vs http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_460069.jpg
Jon Niese.........Ricky Romero
2-1, 3.40 ERA...........4-1, 3.88 ERA

http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/mlb/images/team_logos/60x60/nym.gif
Battling flu-like symptoms, Niese held Miami scoreless over six innings in his last outing. If nothing else, he should be healthier when he takes on the Blue Jays for the first time. Niese is 3-2 with a 4.86 ERA in six career Interleague starts.

http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/mlb/images/team_logos/60x60/tor.gif
Romero suffered his first loss of the season due to some control issues on Sunday, allowing four runs and walking five Twins in 5 1/3 innings.

http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_110683.jpg vs http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_453344.jpg
Miguel Batista.......Brandon Morrow
1-1, 4.26 ERA..........4-2, 2.22 ERA

http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/mlb/images/team_logos/60x60/nym.gif
Forty-one years young, apparently, Batista held the Crew scoreless for seven frames Monday in what was easily his best start of the year. Batista's next turn comes in Toronto, where he worked as a middle reliever, closer and spot starter in 2004-05.

http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/mlb/images/team_logos/60x60/tor.gif
Morrow had his winning streak snapped at four games during his last outing against the Rays. Morrow allowed six runs (one earned) on four hits and four walks. It was also the first time he failed to pitch into the sixth this season.

Sunday, May 20, 1:07 PM ET

http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_518716.jpg vs http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_506693.jpg
Dillon Gee.........Henderson Alvarez
2-3, 5.65 ERA...........3-3, 2.62 ERA

http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/mlb/images/team_logos/60x60/nym.gif
Gee has had two seven-run debacles in his last five outings, and he'll be looking for a positive result to get his season back on track. The righty's ERA has risen by nearly three runs -- from 2.92 to 5.65 -- in his last five outings.

http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/mlb/images/team_logos/60x60/tor.gif
Alvarez turned in his seventh quality start of the year, but had his personal-best three-game winning streak snapped in a loss to the Rays. He allowed four runs, only two of which were earned and takes a 3-3 record and 2.62 ERA into his next start.

Mets, Blue Jays open set with key pieces missing

The Mets have been without several of their everyday players all season due to various injuries. The Blue Jays are about to understand the feeling, spending at least one weekend without their everyday corner infielders.

While the Mets continue to cope with having regulars like Ruben Tejada and Jason Bay on the disabled list, Toronto optioned first baseman Adam Lind to Triple-A Las Vegas and will be without suspended third baseman Brett Lawrie for the entirety of the club's first Interleague series against the Mets this weekend at Rogers Centre.

That series kicks off Friday night, with left-handers Jon Niese and Ricky Romero squaring off. Niese tossed six scoreless innings in his previous outing despite battling flu-like symptoms, while Romero suffered his first loss of the year, walking five and giving up four runs in 5 1/3 innings.

The Blue Jays sent Lind down on Thursday, hoping to get the struggling first baseman back on track at the plate. The corresponding move was the promotion of 24-year-old Yan Gomes, who became the first player born in Brazil to appear in a Major League game on Thursday. Gomes went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles in his debut.

Lind opened the season as Toronto's cleanup hitter, but has hit just .186 with a .586 OPS in 34 games.

"No one ever wants to get sent down, but he understood he wasn't performing up to his ability," Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos said. "He knows he's capable of more, he just hasn't been hitting. ... Sometimes you just need some time and a change of scenery to try to get out of it, and hopefully that's what Adam's going to need."

The Mets, meanwhile, will keep pushing forward without several of their everyday players, though manager Terry Collins is not allowing his club to sit back and focus on who's not in the lineup on a daily basis.

"The guys in that clubhouse are the guys we've got to get it done with," Collins said. "We can't sit there and say, 'Wait until Ruben gets back, or wait until gets back.' That's not how we do it here. Accountability and expectations arise with whomever's got the uniforms on."

[B]Mets: Alderson altering bullpen
The Mets designated veteran reliever D.J. Carrasco for assignment and recalled lefty Robert Carson from Double-A Binghamton, and it might not be the last move intended to rework the National League's worst bullpen. One change that won't be made -- yet, at least -- is pushing Bobby Parnell into late-inning duty.

"The bullpen has been a frustration. There's no question about that," general manager Sandy Alderson said. "We haven't had the consistency or the depth that we'd like to have. At some point, you have to start making changes, and [Wednesday] night was a step in that direction. It's not that we have outstanding candidates in the Minor League system at this point. We've got some good candidates, but like a number of our other prospects, perhaps they're not ready to pitch at this level."

Collins' hope is that Carson, 23, develops into the second left-hander in the bullpen. He was called up earlier this season, but didn't appear in a game.

Blue Jays: Lawrie drops appeal
After dropping his appeal regarding his four-game suspension, Lawrie will sit out this weekend's series. Anthopoulos said he, manager John Farrell and Lawrie re-evaluated his appeal Wednesday night and decided to no longer pursue it, a 180-degree turn from when Lawrie said Wednesday afternoon they would "obviously" appeal it.

Lawrie was also fined an undisclosed amount. He apologized to umpire Bill Miller, who made the questionable strike calls that caused Lawrie to bounce his helmet in Miller's direction.

Worth noting
Being able to use a designated hitter during Interleague Play should lead to more at-bats for Mets outfielder Scott Hairston.

Toronto has a .464 winning percentage in Interleague Play.

I went for 2/3, think Romero will lose tonight.

I'm concerned about the starting pitching as a whole, everybody is outperforming their xFIP significantly, LOB is very high for everyone and BABIP very low. I'm concerned that there will be a drop-off with everyone some time soon :(

Suffice to say that I hope the spark that seems to have lit the fire under their backsides after Lawrie's outburst continues.

C'mon Ricky. Start us off.

He was one of our better closers in the last 10 years outside from Ryan's 2006 season. Lol that's sad

If you are referring to his 2005 season (31 saves, 19th in the league)

That season, he had 8 blown saves (tied for second worst in the league).
His WHIP was 1.43. (93rd among relievers)
FIP 4.31 (53rd) xFIP 4.24 (43rd)
K/9 6.51 (54th)

The statistics show that there were 3 better options in the Blue Jays pen that year to close games (Schoeneweis, Frasor, and Speier).

NO JOHAN and NO R.A. Dickey = Blue Jays sweep The Metropolitans. The pitching matchups look like we have the upper hand. Their bats are a little hot, but it looks like they arent scoring that many runs in the clutch. The only bat Id really be careful of is David Wright.

To be honest we have been great with two outs when runners are on base.. That is where we do most of our damage.

I think we can take 2 games depending on how our pitchers preform. You guys avoided our top two pitchers.

Yet again we miss the opposition top pitcher and this times its probably their top 2 in Johan and Dickey.. we've been very fortunate all year and have failed to take advantage.

This is a part of the year (interleague) where Jays season usually comes to a halt.. Hopefully we can change that this year. There is no reason why we shouldn't win at least 2 games here considering we have the pitching advantage in every one of these games

Most of the baseball fans would be disgusted if the season ended tonight...The Yankees, Red Sox AND Phillies would miss the playoffs. It would be really sad if after 162 games it stays that way, it would be unthinkable.

What Ive seen from the Os now that I realize theyre winners is....Theyre winning the close ones. If you look carefully, theyre winning the extra inning affairs and theyre winning the games that theyre down by 1 or 2, they used to be finished after that.

Now to the REAL GAME:

I never knew Rajai Davis could hit home runs, and here he is hitting 2 of them in ONE night. I want to call him the player of the night. Hats off to Yan Gomes for hitting his first career Home Run.

Think I'd rather have Rajai batting 9th. Just because he hit 2 home runs yesterday doesn't mean he's a power threat. His speed at the back of the order blends more nicely with our lineup imo. I bet there's like a hundred of you who think I'm just talking out of my *** right now but w/e lol

David Wright, who has a scheduled day off Saturday with the Mets in a 20-games-in-20-day stretch, actually is feeling sicker Saturday than the previous day. Terry Collins said the illness could keep Wright out of Sunday's lineup.

One thing is clear, though: Wright does not like DH'ing because it takes him out of the rhythm at the plate. So Collins said Wright will man third base if he's able to play in the series finale. Wright is available to pinch hit, the manager said.

It says they sat Rasmus because he's 0 for his last 18. His defence is phenomenal but there's something clearly wrong with the bat. He hasn't been the same guy since the trade.

Even last year when he was with the Cards he still hit 246/332/420 which was 10% above league average. But as a Jay he's basically been John McDonald, which makes no sense whatsoever. I don't know why he's been this bad, either.

I can't be too disappointed with benching Rasmus because he's just been awful this season.

Defensively for sure. But Thames has been hitting better no doubt

Here's the thing though...

Rasmus:

9.4 BB%
20.8 K%

Thames:

6.2 BB %
25.6 K%

The only reason I'm preferring Rasmus over Thames right now is due to the fact that we already have guys like EE, Jose, JP who K a lot, and are power guys who are violent at the plate, albeit Jose walks quite a bit.

With this kind of lineup we send out, we need a blend of guys who get on base. Now, I know Thames has a .310 OBP, and Rasmus has a .277 OBP, but that's bound to go up. With these days off, I really think Rasmus will get things going, and with his better eye at the plate, if he can get his OBP up a bit, along with his very solid defense, I'll take Rasmus over Thames.

Rasmus has produced a 0.5 WAR thus far due to these factors, and Thames has a -0.4 WAR lol, Thames is utterly useless to us IMO, the guy has no potential.
