View Full Version : NBA refs are ruining the sport.

In the playoffs the best of the best face off. Its a time of hard fouls, banging bodies and grind it out type series. Now, we have have silly and unneccesary fouls that make it seem like its high-school basketball, where you touch someone it's a foul. It seems to me that this new style only seems to favor a couple of players such as: CP3, Kevin Durant, Lebron James, james Harden, and blake griffin. I also believe that the constant flopping is making it so easy to get to the line nowadays. I cant stand watching James Harden drive into the lane and squeak threw bynum and gasol and get a foul , just because they are big and that automatically means its a foul.

I'm sorry, I watched the game last night, and the Refs were doing everything to help the Lakers win that game....it was pathetic. The refs are very bad for sure, but your team was getting everything last night. World Peace blatantly took down two Thunder players and there was no call...it was such a joke. He basically close lined them.

we need to get a second level of refs for in game play.

a second round of refs that ref the first round of refs hahaha

how funny would that be if a ref could foul out for making ****** calls lolol

but yeah, we always knew this. it just frustrates the h*ll out of us when it's our team that gets screwed (or in the Lakers case, just losing).

But refs can absolutely dominate the game... control FTs, penalty, turnovers, aka everything that can halt or start momentum for either team...

LET THEM PLAY. GRIZZ CLIPS SERIES WAS AWESOME CUZ THEY LET THEM play hard and tough

The refs suck, but IMO a Lakers fan should never talk bad about the NBA. Hawks fans, yes. Warriors fans, yes. Kings fans, yes. Bucks fans, yes. On and on.

I agree, the officials are the worst in professional sports. I've been saying it for a long time, the game is called by the name on the jersey and not the play on the court these days.

yea it gives star players unfair advantages. wade isnt even that great without the refs just by watching him play he knows he'll get bailout calls most of the time.

05-17-2012, 12:13 PM
Yeah I feel Joe Johnson would be a superstar too if he got the phantom calls Wade gets and starts flopping everywhere. To me, guys like Joe Johnson who doesn't get calls are more complete basketball players. Most of these so called "stars" (CP3, Wade, Lebron) expects part of the player's game to be bailed out by refs and the flopping they do. They get 10-12 extra points off of FT's then say a Joe Johnson.

The idea that wade and paul are at the level they are at because of the refs is laughable. watch them play. yea wades turned into an actor this last year, and he got ref help in 06 but, to say joe johnson is more complete is absurd.

Ya, that's what I thought too. Didn't Reggie Miller even say something like "There are 3 officials on the floor. How is it possible that all 3 missed that closeline?" It was pretty effing bad. Lakers got so many calls in the favor. Who do you think D. Stern wants to win, haha. jk

Anyone here ever reffed a game? Hardest game to ref by far!! No matter what you call you are 50% wrong as "the other team" cries about it. NBA refs get it right the majority of the time and players and fans just like to whine as evidence by this thread.

I actually agree except when they are calling fouls for certain teams. Sometimes you can tell there is some bias and to deny that it is just being blind.

The NBA officials are by far the worst in american sports. I would be willing to guess that their accuracy is less than 2/3.

So why is this?

1. Are they incompetent?
2. Is the game too fast/difficult to officiate
3. Are the refs advised to call the game differently for certain players/teams?

In the end it doesnt matter, unacceptable and the fact nothing has been done about it in years leads me to believe the 3rd option.

Man up and don't make excuses. The Lakers lost because they aren't as good. The refs aren't the reason.

The refs aren't ruining the sport topics like this that show to many fans have zero accountability towards there own team is what is ruining the sport.

1. Just like any career, there are great employees, good ones, average, and below average.
2. Basketball is the most difficult to officiate. There is a lot going on that all three refs are responsible for. Think about this, you have one guy who watches the paint play. He is looking for (at least) 1. Offensive 3 seconds 2. Defensive 3 seconds 3. Off ball fouls 4. the restricted area (charge/block)
3. I doubt that they are advised to call things a certain way. Every individual has their own biases; however.

The superstar thing is also more nuanced than generally discussed. Kobe and Monty McCutchen (sic?) don't have a good relationship and I cringe when I see him ref a Lakers game. Crawford and Duncan are not a good ref/player match.

I really dont see how the refs benefit james harden he just has the best body control of anybody in the league, without running over players. He rarely gets calls his way and when he does he deserves them(the exception being the flop vs dallas).

I understand its tough for them to see everything. However, it seems they compensate for that by judging players reactions or flat out guessing.

That is sadly true.

To the point about the Artest takedown of Collison/Harden; it was easy to see what the ref told Harden when he asked about it. The ref explained that he was behind him and couldn't see (the arm). So, he guessed that Collison ran his own guy over.

Flopping aside, the NBA refs suck for the simple reason that they're incredibly inconsistent in the span of one game or even in one quarter.

If they would just decide at the outset to call it tight or call it loose (and equally for both teams), the players would adjust and it would be fine.

Right now you see games where it's a hackfest and then suddenly the fouls start flying for light contact. Or one team starts getting foul calls every 10 seconds and the other team keeps hacking away.

theDOC

too many fouls. it's at the point where games fall on the calls of officials more than they should be able to, and it disrupts the game and the level of play.

technical fouls: these have become way too excessive. the way I see it, technical fouls should be something that doesn't allow a game to get out of hand; not change the outcome of the game because someone is disputing a foul. it's become ridiculous.

personal fouls: it seems like the rules have made it easier to score and impossible to play defense. the 'durant move' (where he swipes under a defender in position's arms) is a perfect example. that shouldn't be a foul, because the offensive player shouldn't be able to initiate contact.

flopping: it's out of control. it takes away from the game.

what are some of the users thoughts on fouls generally, and how the game is negatively affected by the way games have been called lately? with more fouls being called, does that put more of the game on officials/officiating?

That's what I'm saying. There is a lot of contact, and a lot of fouls. If the refs let more go people (fans and players) would be *****ing that so and so got fouled and there was no call. People will never be happy.

the rules that promote more fouls, promote more error in officiating.

the rules that promote less fouls, well have less human error and less disruption.

Only thing i would say is for harden and westbrook to act a bit more professional. the flopping has to stop and the taunting.

The Spurs are ultimately to blame because they blew their 18 point lead, but of course when the home team cuts it to a one possession game in the 4th, then all the calls go their way. How many times down the stretch did the Spurs make a bucket, only to have it waved off and sent the other way. Then a call would happen against the Spurs on the other side of the court and the Thunder would get to the line. The Spurs would make shots but just couldn't get a 4th quarter run going due to the bad officiating. The refs were acting like they wanted both teams to get into the bonus as quick as possible so they could dictate the entire flow of it.

The SJax Tech was awful. Just a ref waiting to blow his whistle at the earliest opportunity.

I'm not saying the Thunder only won because of the refs, but they didn't even give the Spurs a chance to get ahead in the 4th due to the officiating. After the lead had been blown in the 3rd quarter, I almost knew the game was over at that point because the home court bias was going to kick into play. Just awful.

15 free throws for the Thunder in 4th quarter. Only 8 for the Spurs. Spurs only shot 18 free throws in the whole game while the Thunder shot 31.

the refs made SOME (more than a few) bad calls. but it is on the spurs though. defensively, they did all they could. harden and durant really proved themselves. fisher did was fisher does. westbrook tried to cut them some slack. and what does the big three do with it. get carried away with it on offense. they get caught up in the up-tempo game. they stop running the pick and roll with precision. they stop looking for open shooters. they start forcing shots and passes. turnovers and missed opportunities. they lose. saddest thing is we were so close to the rings this year, we go to sleep tonight with that nasty metallic oklahoma ring taste in our mouth.

Reality is, the refs are a joke in the NBA and they are ruining the sport allowing the flopping, inconsistent calls and straight up horrid no calls.

How the **** is Stephen Jackson called for taunting but Ibaka can dunk and pose minutes after?

The NBA refs are a joke and it's up to the finals to protest it but it won't happen.
