View Full Version : Is Western Conference as hard as people make it to be? 3 teams came out since 1998

Since 1998, 3 teams have came out of the Western conference. That's dominant.

Lakers, Spurs, and Mavericks. That's insane! 14 years and only 3 teams have came out the Western Conference

The Mavericks, Lakers, and Spurs have dominated for 14 years

Its been easy for them too. The east is even, so many teams has made the finals since 1998

Don't even mention the Mavs in the same breath as the Spurs and Lakers of the 2000's.

The Lakers and the Spurs have dominated the West since 1998, the Mavs just happen to be the outlier.

lol what? are you joking? if anything that makes the case stronger.

talent wins championships. don't think about it like teams -- it's the players that matter. duncan and co., kobe and co., and dirk. they are so damn good that all those other really talented teams couldn't crack through.

the early 2000's kings and blazers. SSOS suns. melo/billups nuggets. all those iderations of LAL, san antonio and dallas that lost out to a championship version year of the other (i.e. the spurs eliminating the lakers and vice versa)

only now is the east sorta catching up. but traditionally the first 2-4 non playoff teams in the west would have made the playoffs in the east. there used to be a huge talent disparity when duncan kobe and shaq were just running wild on the league.

2 finals appearances, 1 ring, several #1 seeds and best overall regular season records.

they are definitely 3rd on the list. but the fact is they are the only other team.

I'm not saying they don't deserve credit, but those credentials are nothing compared to LA and SA. They absolutely dominated the Western Conference, while Mavs finally made it out.

I did forget about 2006 though, so that's my bad. My point though is that despite being 3rd on the list, it's a very, very distant third.

OKC gonna be the 4th team to come out of the west and the new #1 dominant team of the conference.

yerp. nothing wrong with that. duncan shaq and kobe amongst the best ever. kinda cool that dirk broke threw without another star.

How are the Sonics doing? The Lakers or Spurs will come out the West to keep it going

Thunder are 2 years away from being championship contenders and that core y'all got wont be there in 2 years

I think its remarkable that in 14 years only 3 have came out

The West supposedly has so many good teams but only 3 have came out

The East has had so many teams come out

The thunder could totally win the finals this year, if the Heat make it out of the east. If the thunder can get there without a decent offensive/rebounding center remains to be seen. Perkins is a joke and serge is more of a blocking specialist (yes I know he is a PF). They are going to have a hell of a time vs. the spurs, but I think they match up really well with the heat.

Thunder wont beat the Lakers

1) Mavs suck this year! Lakers bigs are going to murder the Thunder

2) Arrest will shut down Durant

3) Kobe will guard Westbrook

The lakers have been so inconsistent I'm nervous as hell for this series. Without Odom coming off the bench second unit scoring is such a crapshoot. I mean Steve freaking Blake had like 20 points last game, you never know where those extra points are going to come from.

1. If Mozgov McGee, and Farried were able to handle our 2 bigs, I know Ibaka, Perkins, and Collison will do even better.

2. Even though Durant hasn't played great vs us OKC still won the series, Harden's the one I'm worried about us. He killed us all season til that his face ran into artest's elbow.

3. All the energy kobe would use trying to guard Westbrook will leave kobe useless on offense. If Lawson went HAM on us imagine westbrook. Plus Kobe's D is overrated as **** now.

Thunder in 5.

The West has been difficult ever season since as far back as I can remember, but most especially since 96... you had the Jazz, the Spurs, the Rockets that had AMAZING teams... plus a little earlier the Sonics and the Blazers, but once 98 hit, the West was beastly. Think about teams like the Nash/Amare/Marion Suns? That team would have swept every team in the east. And the C-Webb Kings? They would have destroyed every team in the east. And teams like LAL and SA were beating up on each other, and for first round match-ups they had to go against teams lead by the likes of Garnett and Melo.... those Nuggets teams that were first-round fodder in the West would have won the East most seasons. It wasn't until Detroit came up that the east had a team that was consistently good, and the Heat had two years where they were really good... but other than that it wasn't until Garnett went out East that the East started being competative, and even this season everybody is saying that the East, with the injury to Rose, is simply a formality and that the Heat are coming out on top. While over in the west you have teams like OKC and SA that have AMAZING records, and a team like LAL that has Kobe playing along with two 7-footers that nobody can match up with, and a team like Memphis, that would walk all over better than half the teams in the east get knocked out in the first round by the Clips, who have the best PG in the game and perhaps the second best PF. The West is CRAZY!!!! The nuggest pushed the Lakers to seven games, because they ARE THAT GOOD!

The west is crazy deep. And has been. Lookin' at the east, I think this was the first time in about ten years that every playoff team was over .500, and that says a lot. There are teams in the west that won 48 games and misses the playoffs, while teams under .500 get in the east? That's insane! It's improved, and things are starting the balance themselves out, but lets face it, the West has been disgustingly hard to win every since MJ retired.

Totally - they should implement some sort of "cap" system on spending so that a smaller organization like Oklahoma City or San Antonio could compete with the wealthier/larger cities.

Well I guess we can dream...

madness i say, madness!!

revenue sharing and huge, constantly shifting rosters are the big reason for parity in baseball.

nope. its just proof that those teams are well managed. and even if your a small market team (sas) you can still be a consistent title contender and not just wait for the lockout and wait for the new cba to pucking help you from your weak decisions. yes im talking to you jordan.
