He's made 9 first teams and 2 second teams with a total of 11, tied with Kevin Garnett for the most selections.

LOL no there is no way he should have 9 first teams and its almost kind of embarrassing that that could even happen

Why is there a thread made every 5 minutes about Kobe's defense?

He's been on the First Team Defense for over 6 years now and nobody noticed til now?

Um ya? He plays passing lanes like champ Bailey in his prime, leading to at least 6-10 points a game.

They should continue listing Kobe even after he retires.

Yes. Kobe is an excellent defender. He has proven he can lock down some of the best scorers in the league especially early in his career. However, I thought his defense dropped off somewhat when he became the number one option in LA. Maybe some of those defensive teams were by reputation. Kobe is a selective defender at this point in his career. His defensive teams days are probably over.

you dont get the nod that many times unless your atleast a good defender.

maybe the thread should say " has kobe been a good enough defender to justify the acalaides " that could be debated. but to question if he was a good defender through out his career is kind of obsurd.

That's how I feel... They're just putting him there for the heck of it

Before,he was a consistent good defender, now he defends when he wants to.

maybe since they got artest & barnes he doesnt have to carry the defensive load he once did ??

if you notice the lakers today in comparison to the lakers of old have less fire power.. out side of gasol, bynum, & kobe you have no real offensive threat. maybe as kobe gets older he can focus more on one end of the court then the other. after all age catches up with every one.

Goes to show how those all nba teams are jokes and all based on reps. I don't give a damn on those teams.

Yeah, pretty much. In 10-20 years people will look at Kobe's achievements and think he was some dominant defender his whole career. Obviously he was one for a long time, but the past 3 or so years has just been purely on reputation.

Not anymore, even though I would still choose him over any perimeter player to get you one stop, he was/is that good.

Kobe used to be a really good defender, but now he is as bad as Derek Fisher on defense. I laughed so hard when I saw he was named to all defensive team last year. I'll laugh even harder if the NBA names him to all defensive team this year :laugh2:

Dude used to lock up the opposing team's best perimeter player all the time. Not so much now, he shows it in spurts, but he's just doesn't have the energy and quickness anymore.

Kobe is a solid to good defender 75% of the time but that remaiing 25% whether late in a game or when he wants to shut you down he is elite.

If I can attribute Kobe's defense to something, I'd probably say that he, Ron (MWP) and KG are probably 3 of the best one-possession defenders in the league. If you need that end-game stop, call for one of them. Obviously I'd choose Metta over Kobe in this regard, but Kobe a close 2nd and KG 3rd.

I agree with you but I gotta put KG 2nd his ablity to pump his team up with attitude and heart is pretty amazing. That being said I hate the Guy.

He was a very good defender, but there is no sensible argument to be made that he deserves 9 first team selections. Possibly half that, give or take.

Can't argue with this logic.

ron and bowen are prob the best wing defenders since the 2000's
prime kobe is near that though

Arron Afflalo has scored 10 ppg in this years playoffs, and he scored 15 ppg in the regular season. He's shooting 38% from the field, down from 47% in the regular season. His 3 point percentage is down from almost 40% to 17%. For the advanced stats fans, he had a per of 14.7 during the regular season, and it's at 10.0 right now in this years playoffs.

nah, there have always been the specialists that get overlooked, who were better wing defenders at times during Kobe's career. You listed 2 of them. LeBron, Iggy, Bell, Deng, Christie, and others have been better, but that is because for many of them it was the only reason they were in the NBA, so they never took plays off on that end. Ideally, the league and media want to see big names on those all NBA teams, so they start to look past many of the specialists, and set a new criteria for the stars to be able to get on there.

Please don't think by any of this I mean Kobe hasn't been a really good defender over his career, especially from 2002-2009. But there have been a handful easily better, because its literally their job.

Kobe really can be a lockdown defender if he wants. Just look at the jobs he did against Westbrook on 4-22. He shot 3-22 with 14pts. Obviously , it would be better if Kobe always defended like that.. But still. He's got skill on defense.

16 years in the league. How many players are considered anything more than a defensive liability at this point?

for sure dude. The list is very short. And its one of the, if not the, biggest reasons I have Kobe top 10 ever. 14 years or so being a top 5 player. That is nearly impossible. Especially for a wing.

He hasn't been an elite defender for five years now, but people continue to place him in all defensive teams. Star power for ya.

From 1999 to 2007, Kobe was one of the better on the ball defenders in the league.
