Ricky Romero........Brandon McCarthy
4-0, 3.64 ERA..........2-3, 2.96 ERA

Romero went eight innings in his last start, striking out a season-high six batters to beat Texas and improve to 4-0. The lefty has thrown at least eight innings in three starts this season and is the first Blue Jays pitcher to start 4-0 since 2009.

McCarthy will make his eighth start of the season, tops among all A's starters. He has struck out 26 batters in 45 2/3 innings, while walking 13. In his last start, he held the Red Sox to one run on five hits over 6 2/3 innings.

Brandon Morrow.........Jarrod Parker
3-1, 2.38 ERA.............1-0, 1.38 ERA

Morrow tossed the second shutout of his career in a 5-0 win over the Angels on May 3. He allowed just three hits and didn't walk a batter for the second consecutive start. Morrow has now allowed just one earned run in his past 21 2/3 innings.

Parker will be making his third start of the season. In his 13 innings pitched, he has allowed 11 hits and just two runs, striking out nine while walking three. Opponents are batting .234 against him.

Blue Jays' West Coast swing hits Oakland

The Blue Jays continue their six-game California swing on Tuesday when they head north up the I-5 from Anaheim to Oakland to meet the Athletics for a two-game series.

The A's return home after a 5-4 East Coast trip, winning the final two games against the Rays at Tropicana Field.

Squaring off in the first game on Tuesday will be A's righty Brandon McCarthy and Blue Jays lefty Ricky Romero.

McCarthy gets the call after manager Bob Melvin decided to switch him and rookie Jarrod Parker in the rotation, taking advantage of Monday's off-day to give Parker extra rest.

McCarthy will be making his eighth start of the season, tops among all A's starters. He has struck out 26 batters in 45 2/3 innings, while walking 13.

In his last start, McCarthy (2-3, 2.96 ERA) held the Red Sox to one run on five hits over 6 2/3 innings.

Romero (4-0, 3.64) is coming off a victory last Wednesday against the Rangers, tossing eight innings and allowing five earned runs. The Blue Jays offense spotted him 11 runs.

Toronto shortstop Yunel Escobar, who sat out for the first time this season on Sunday, will be back in the lineup after the off-day Monday. Manager John Farrell felt Sunday was an appropriate time to give Escobar an extended period of rest.

"I think the need to give him a day off, in combination with [Monday], so he has two days down," Farrell said. "It became pretty apparent on the schedule, he has played every inning of the season so far and while he is swinging the bat better of late I still think the overriding thing was an additional day of rest."

Blue Jays: Johnson not sore
Second baseman Kelly Johnson was back in Toronto's lineup on Sunday, one day after being removed from Saturday night's game against the Angels because of soreness in his legs.

"He has a history of some dehydration [issues] that he has to maintain," Farrell said. "He was cramping up the day before, and because of those cramps on Friday night, he felt a little bit sore, and it was kind of hanging around late in the game. When he got through that last at-bat, we were going to get him off his feet."

Johnson legged out and infield single on Sunday, displaying no signs of injury.

Athletics: Preparing for Manny's return
Manager Bob Melvin expects the buzz in Oakland over Manny Ramirez's return to the Major Leagues to increase as the end of his 50-game suspension on May 30 draws closer.

Ramirez, currently in Phoenix working in extended spring training games, will go on a 10-game Minor League assignment before they call him up when the suspension ends.

"He knows where he is in his career," Melvin said. "And he knows the effect he can have on young guys."

Ramirez, a career .312 hitter with 555 home runs and 1,813 RBIs, batted .059 in five games with Tampa Bay last season

"DH has been his role and that's what we envision him doing," Melvin continued. "We'll have to see what we'll do, roster-wise."

Worth noting
The Athletics have committed 11 errors in their last 12 games after making eight over their first 16 contests.

The Blue Jays split four games in Oakland last season but lost the season series to the Athletics, 3-4.

Should be able to sweep them. Theyre a decent team, the first game is going to be interesting from a pitching point of view, the second game should be easy..theyre starting a younger pitcher with only a few starts in his career.

They arent going to be a walk in the park, but we should be able to beat them.

On the bright side it would be tough for Romero and Morrow to give up home runs in that ballpark

05-08-2012, 03:07 AM
i have a feeling this will be a disappointing series... The A's are playing some pretty good baseball and are coming from back to back wins in Tampa. Our offense continues to suck and we are gonna face a couple of above average pitchers. Mccarthy is exactly the type of guy we struggle against. Watch him go 7 or 8 with no problems. Parker has great stuff and he too can shut us down. This offense in its current state is capable of making 80% of major league pitchers look pretty good.

Then you have the handicap of having Farrell as a manager. Lets hope he doesn't get put in a situation where he can hurt the team. Ofcourse he would have already made 1 mistake before the games even start when he pencils Lind in the clean-up spot again

Its gonna be a big struggle for the Jays to put runs on the board with Oaklands ballpark. Romero and Morrown are gonna hafta be perfect.

Young pitchers who've barely seen the light of day in the Majors tend to do very well, since teams generally don't know what to expect. Don't expect Parker to get shelled.

I'm not normally the one to call for a players exile, but put it this way. If I had sucked as long and hard at my job as Adam Lind, I would have been canned years ago. He's not good anymore, ****ing get rid of him. You're wasting your time with this guy.

And yet he's still batting 4th. It's just ****ing ridiculous and it's time somebody really questioned AA's decision making process. I don't know AA or any of what he does but I'm worried he's become complacent after a fast start to his GMing career. There's absolutely no excuse for not finding a replacement for Lind after 3 seasons of complete crap.

It's quite laughable that Lind is still batting 4th, but considering Bautista went 3 for 15, EE 0 for 14, Thames 2 for 13 and Rasmus 2 for 15 the lineup construction really didn't matter, that team wasn't gonna put runs with that performance against Anaheim.

I'm starting to think bomber is right and Farrell is just a crappy manager.

Mccarthy will also miss his start and be replaced with Tyson Ross which is a huge break..

Keep telling me our record is decent but with the soft schedule we've had and seemingly missing many of the oppositions top pitchers, our record should have been where the Rays and Orioles are at

We have our ace on the hill, you know someone who can easily find his way outta trouble a runner at second 1 out so what if he steals third?? The guy at the plate tying the game is more important no?

JF ain't pitching, Ricky is. He's been falling behind all game, he needs to focus and throw strikes. That's on him not JF.

Ya but doesn't the manager give the signs from the dugout to the catcher to relay to the Pitcher to keep an eye on the runner??

It usually is when your offense shows up for one inning a game.

Ya but doesn't the manager give the signs from the dugout to the catcher to relay to the Pitcher to keep an eye on the runner??

for the most part no. unless he knows they are going to steal.

Mostly it's the pitchers and catchers call with the occasional time where an infielder may ask for it
