The two names are the Angels and Spirit . Spirit are the name of the Clippers cheerleaders. They should do something cool like Ghouls, Voodoo, Zombie type logo etc. Something extremely unique and eerie.

That's what people said about the Thunder when they moved to OKC. Doesn't really matter what they change the name to really, it's not gonna be well received at first. If they can put a winning team on the court nobody will really care.

Angels is okay, but Spirit is awful. Definitely a WNBA name. Makes sense that it's a cheer squad name, too. 'Archangels', which a bunch of people commenting on that article are suggesting, is the worst of them all.

I still like Cornets the best.

New Orleans Katrina LMAO but na it should be like New Orleans Cajun or Bandits. It'd be hilarious if they did a Zombie type logo tho, but I think people would get offended. Now that I think about it; Katrina wouldn't be a bad name to symbolize the sense of unity it brought to that city

this. their jerseys could have been blue and on the jersey it could have just said new orleans. and the logo could have just read blues in a graphic way.

Cmon do something cool, badass, innovative.

Honestly, 'cool' and 'badass' make for the worst name ideas. They become really quickly dated, and even when they're 'cool' at first, kids and teens love them but it's just embarrassing for adults who spend all the money. You get awful brandings that are suppose to invoke scariness or whatever, but just end up being cartoonishly stupid. In cases like Toronto or Minny or Charlotte or NOH they literally have a 'scary' cartoon character logo and it's just awful. Nobody's scared or impressed. It isn't 'cool'.

The really great classic names in sports generally come from heritage or something to do with the city, rather than trying to be 'cool'. Yankees, Celtics, Lakers (even though it no longer fits), Maple Leafs, Sixers, Nuggets, Packers, 49ers, Bills, Red Sox, White Sox, Phillies, Pacers, Dodgers, Islanders, Canadiens, Canucks, Saints, etc.
With enough history - like, if you were an ABA team or have been around for decades - a name that is supposed to be tough or cool or show how strong or fast you are or whatever can become good - NY Giants, Bulls, Spurs, Eagles, Hawks, etc - but that's only because it's become part of the history and heritage of the region - the name has become just a name, rather than them trying to use it to invoke the imagery of the word for whatever marketing reason.

Just about every 'cool' name now just comes across as trying way too hard, and becomes embarrassing very quickly, and every name supposed to invoke fear or imply toughness or scariness or whatever (incl the vast majority of animal names) just sounds like kids naming their pee-wee team.

I really really hope they go with heritage and something that relates to the city and the people, rather than just something to try and look cool or sound scary.

Like the raptors :facepalm::facepalm:

i hate that name. wtf does an extinct dinosaur have to do with toronto.

jurrasic park was a popular movie when the toronto basket ball team was emerging. the balot had "raptor" on it and every little kid voted for the raptor name. our dam logo looked like barney.

i disagree. first of all it was the other 28 teams that vetoed the trade for lamar ..

and new orleans ended up getting kaman and eric gordon and a pick i beleive. they got a much better deal, there for stern helped them out. along with the other 28 teams that had minority ownership at the time.

just saying.

Yup. Also, had that initial trade gone through the Hornets would have been waaaaay into the luxury tax for the next couple years without any youth or a decently marketable player. Who would buy that team? And who owns the team now? Stern did what he had to do to find a buyer. As shady as it may have been I think it was the right business decision in the long run

Yup, they're the first example I always use. It's awful. Especially with the cartoon Raptor.
Minny are almost on the same level - they'd be much better off as the Muskies, imo. That has the makings of a classic team name.

I don't follow the other sports as much - so I went through the leagues when writing that post to see if I was forgetting any names, and realized how good the Canadian teams often are with them - Canucks, Maple Leafs, Canadiens, Oilers, Blue Jays, Whitecaps. Hell, even 'Toronto FC', the MLS team, is better than most of these animal names or scary things that new major league sports teams go for. That just makes the Raptors seem worse.

Thunder still don't seem like a real team to me. Not a slight against them, I love their roster, but the Unis are STILL terrible and the name ironically doesn't have any impact.

SAINTS!!!!

If theres a Kings in Nba and a Kings in Nhl why shouldnt there be Saints in both sports?

And why not in the same city? ( like things are done in europe , all the sports teams of the city are the same name, example Real madrid, Barcelona, Bayern etc).

Use the same color scheme and logo, wich is ABSOLUTELY classy too.

The mardi gras or drunks would be better team names than angels and spirit. I mean really, when you think of NAHLUNS, you dont think of angels, you think of idiots doing stuff for beads and creepy people performing incantations, black magic, and voodoo. Neither of that screams angels.

1. New Orleans Jazz (Not gonna happen though. Utah shouldn't have to give it up)
2. New Orleans Hornets (keep the same)
3. Louisiana Dukes
4. Louisiana Blues (But there is already a NHL team with that name)
5. Louisiana Bourbons
6. Louisiana Halos

....the Caspers? lol

Spirit is pathetic. Totally cheesy. Teams that don't have an 's' at the end of the name are generally horrible. They sound like WNBA names. The Thunder? Sounds like a girls softball team. MLS has the same problem. Chicago Fire? The LA Galaxy? Philadelphia Union? Houston Dynamo? lol so horrible.

I'm not crazy about the names I came up with either. It's not easy to make a name but they can do a lot better than Spirit. OKC could have thought of something better than Thunder.

I think the Heat isn't THAT BAD but the Miami Tropics would be better (and funny).
