Never been a fan of awarding the defensive player of the year award to someone who plays on a barely above average defensive team. The Knicks rank 11th in the league in points allowed per game, 10th in the league in FG% defense, and 5th in defensive rating. The Bulls, Celtics, Sixers, and Heat all rank ahead of New York in every category on that list.

My pick for defensive player of the year? King James. Miami ranks 4th, 5th, and 4th in the same 3 categories. Here's how the two compare statistically individually in several defensive categories:

King James: 6.42 Defensive rebounds PG, 1.85 steals PG (4th in NBA), 0.81 blocks PG, 97.4 defensive rating (7th in NBA), 4.5 defensive win shares (2nd in NBA)

Chandler: 6.45 Defensive rebounds PG, 0.90 steals PG, 1.44 blocks PG (19th in NBA), 98.7 defensive rating (14th in NBA), 3.6 defensive win shares (11th in NBA)

James has been playing some of the best defense I have seen in years as of late and its a shame he didn't get recognized for it.

Agree, James has defended every position for most of the season. Chandler is a great defender but no where near as good as lbj is when it comes to overall performance. That said who cares. Everyone knows how good lbj is at defense and all that matters is that ring. Let's stay focused on that heat fans.

Chandler changed the identity of the Knicks.

Sure Lebron has some nice chase down blocks, and in crunch time guards the teams best player pretty damn well. But when you are talking about 4 quarters of play, Miami uses Battier to guard opposing teams best players a lot. Chandler every time he is on the floor is the backbone of that teams defense.

Lebron guards EVERY position and can do it quite well. Chandler guards one position and it's usually when he's anchored in the paint. James is the overall best defender and had a better season defensively. The award is his though.cant change it.

I realize he guards every position. Chandler does not guard 1 position. Anyone who comes in the paint he's guarding. There's more to DPOY than guarding every position or blocking shots. He has to be the voice on the back end and communicate and make sure people are in the right places, and also protect the rim.

That's what's made KG so special the way he talks to everyone and makes sure everyone is where they need to be.

This thread is not a bait thread. LeBron effects the opposing offenses more than Chandler. LeBron can guard 1-4 and some centers. Heat's defense is much better than the Knicks.

all chandler had to do was to be in the discussion. knicks were top five in defensive rating, and thats good enough to win it. chandler deserved this award, but he is also absolutely being rewarded for his defense in last years playoffs through this award as well. voters aren't supposed to do that, but they're people too.

Knicks went from 22nd to 5th in defensive rating.

Not only that but the voting was Chandler, Ibaka, Dwight in that order.

http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/knicks/post/_/id/18467/chandler-lebron-is-a-great-defender

But as far as on the ball right now in the league, I think Tony Allen is the best defender in the league."

Chandler received 311 points, including 45 first-place votes, from a panel of 121 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Oklahoma City’s Serge Ibaka finished second with 294 points and Orlando’s Dwight Howard, who had won the award each of the previous three seasons, finished third with 186 points. Players were awarded five points for each first-place vote, three points for each second-place vote and one point for each third-place vote received.

I wouldnt have been upset if LBJ got the award, but I think Chandler is just as desreving. There were a few guys that the deserve the award, like every season, so somebody alwyas gets robber. This is why they should have an award for post defenders and perimeter defenders.

He wasn't even close to winning based on votes. He didn't get robbed out of anything because he simply did not deserve it. Even if TC didn't win their were better candidates and people who had way more votes.

The only thing he should care about to be frank is getting the Finals MVP. He is definitely getting the MVP.

I don't think anybody deserved the Defensive MVP but Serge Ibaka. By far the best defensive player in the NBA right now. I love how people are saying Lebron guarded 1 - 5 this year? I never saw him guard Westbrook, Howard, CP3 Tony Parker, Bynum, etc. So yes if you count guarding a frail Gasol and and a one dimensional Rose makes him look real special.

Wade>You
05-03-2012, 06:21 PM
I wouldn't say he got robbed, I think the crime is that Serge Ibaka had so many votes and LeBron had so little. Congrats to Serge for leading the league in blocks, but the disparity in votes was the crime.

Also, Dwight Howard's actions this season clearly cost him a chance at another DPOY.

These awards should never be decided by the media.

Lebron def didnt get as many votes as he shouldve, Ibaka didnt deserve it, its not the most blocked shots award. Dwight either. Theres no one else that effects the game on a defensive side of the ball positions 1-4 and sometimes 5 like LeBron did this year. W/e

As far as Tyson changing the way the knicks played defense sure, but Shumpert was as pivitol to the change, so was Mike Woodson so dont make it seem like Chandler is the prodigal son

I disagree strongly with that. While he is definitely a defensive force with his ability to block shots, he is basically a one trick pony. He is an awful pick and roll defender and and average man defender. His defensive presence is felt almost exclusively as a weak side shot blocker.

Actually both amare and melo have been to the wcf's.

alot of great players in the past never were fortunate enough to win rings. barkley, malone, stockton, r.miller, etc.

robert horry was a ring chaser, was he a proven winner ? or a fortunate role player.

your logic here is flawed im sorry.

with that said. lebron is def the mvp so i dont think he got robbed. he earned the most valuable player of the year because of all the things he provides for his team.

Btw, please let's stop calling LeBron a king. Thank you.

 Yep, he will always be a prince until he finally leads a team to a championship. A king must conquer a kingdom to attain his crown. Lebron hasn't conquered anything except for a bunch of meaningless MVP awards and meaningless Hollinger stats. If were talking regular season, then he is a king. But unfortunately, they don't award rings for regular season performances. You must perform big on the biggest stage to become a king.

To the one whom beats the best of the best on the greatest stage of combat, shall thus become the king of the land. Until then Lebron is but a usurper or a prince....surely not a king.

5th in defensive rating is the most important #

Still they are average everywhere else save for forcing turnovers, makes you wonder what that has to do with Chandler. Shumpert is the guy getting most of the steals but perhaps his presence allows the Knicks to apply that pressure without surrendering open shots galore.

Queen James robbed??? really? in my opinion not a top 5 defender in the league...but asside from that the person that got robbed was Ibaka...As much as I dont like Lebron he will get MVP and it is well deserved, defensive player of the year...never...

I cant believe so many people buy into Ibaka, he good but not DPOY good, Nick Collison is a better defender than him. People just dont notice it because charges arent as sexy nor as easily tracked* for the common fan/analyst.

* By not easily tracked I mean its not a stat thats spoonfed to them via the boxscore, its ****ing easy to look up tho

Who cares? He shouldn't. The only thing that should matter to him is the Larry O'Brian trophy. And I don't think he cares all that much about that. Maybe winning DPOY (individual accomplishment) award would be more important to him then a title (team accomplishment). Maybe I got him wrong and a ring is the only thing but judging by his recent comments about how not winning a title wouldn't be a wasted season, just a disappointment :pity: I don't think he values it as we think he should.

And to swerve back on to topic, LeBron has improved his defense immensely since his early seasons but Tyson Chandler did have a huge impact on the Knicks defense, from being a joke last year to being very respectful this year. They both deserve credit and consideration and I'm not saying TC deserved it more then LeBron, but LeBron certainly did not get robbed. Not at all. ****, he'll probably be the MVP and that is better then DPOY award.

Swish-cheese Tony Parker? A great defender? Ha.

My opinion is that while LBJ as an argument for the DPOY, Tyson Chandler also has a very compelling argument. It is impressive what James does defensively, guards 1-3 and sometimes the 4 at his size... (much like Pippen) but interior defense, while not as glamorous, is very important in its own right.

THE MTL

Tyson Chandler fully deserved it. For the Knicks to go from bottom 5 to top 5 in defensive rating shows the impact that player particularly had.

I do agree though that Shumpert is a big reason for Knicks defensive rating as well. But even Shumpert says that it all starts with Chandler.

The people who are saying that the Knicks improvement doesn't mean Chandler should win are really short sighted. Chandler's defense was so good that he was able to salvage a defensive wreck largely on his own. If the stats don't tell you that story then watch the Knicks some time. He is incredible.

AceMan
05-04-2012, 09:47 AM
And btw, the DPOY should pretty much always be a big man. They just have WAY more effect on the game. For me to say a wing deserves it there would have to be no deserving bigs and the wing would have to have a monumental impact, as in one of the best defensive seasons of all time. I'd vote for Ibaka or Howard as well as Chandler over LBJ for that reason.

Of coarse Lebron had a great season, because he had Wade and Bosh to defer the defense and he had less double teams on him. No ***** he will dominate.
He also had Wade which is the best SG defender so he has had help in every aspect of his game, even tho he doesnt need it.

Either way he is the best player in the league, it just that Chandler desefved DPOY since he does improve the team D.

Wade and Bosh missed 27 games combined so his dominance wasnt because of them. He was dominant in CLE too.

And Wade is NOT the best SG defender in the league. He's a good defender when he wants to be but I'd take Tony Allen any day as far as perimeter defence.
