New York -- A left hand laceration will force Amare Stoudemire to sit out Game 3 of the New York Knicks-Miami Heat first-round playoff series and may sideline him for the remainder of the series, a team source told ESPNNewYork.com on Tuesday.

Stoudemire suffered the laceration after punching a glass case containing a fire extinguisher Monday moments after the Knicks' 104-94 loss to the Heat.

Stoudemire saw a hand specialist on Tuesday and, according to a source with knowledge of the injury, he suffered no ligament or tendon damage.

The power forward punched the case while heading to the Knicks locker room moments after the Knicks lost to fall behind 2-0 in the best-of-seven series. He was treated by paramedics and team doctors from both the Knicks and the Heat and was seen leaving the arena with his left forearm and hand heavily bandaged and his arm being supported by a sling. He suffered the laceration on the inside of his palm, on the side of his hand closest to the pinkie. He needed an undisclosed number of stitches on the cut.

"He was just frustrated," a league source with knowledge of the incident said.

Stoudemire's frustration may have stemmed from his shot attempts -- nine -- in Monday's game, according to the source. He scored 18 points and had seven rebounds.

Stoudemire addressed the incident via his Twitter account.

"I am so mad at myself right now," read a post on Stoudemire's verified account. "I want to apologize to the fans and my team, not proud of my actions. headed home for a new start."

A later post read: "We all have done thing out of anger that we regret. That makes us human. Bad timing on my part. Sorry guys. This to shall pass."

Stoudemire has had a difficult season. He struggled with his shot early in the season, the result of not playing basketball during the lockout while rehabbing a back injury. Stoudemire's brother died in a car crash in February and he suffered a bulging disk in his lower back, which sidelined him for four weeks.

This most recent injury comes at a difficult time for the Knicks. The team lost Iman Shumpert, its top perimeter defender, to a torn left ACL and lateral meniscus in Game 1. Chandler has been slowed by flu-like symptoms, which limited him to 21 minutes in Game 1. He was severely compromised by the illness on Saturday. His condition improved in Game 2 on Monday.

Point guard Baron Davis has also been limited by a back injury.

Most Knicks in the locker room after Game 2 did not want to discuss specifics of the Stoudemire incident.

Center Tyson Chandler said the Knicks would have to "deal" with the fallout from the power forward's injury.

"He's probably going to be out. I don't know how bad it is. ... Your emotions run high. In a split second, a decision can alter things," Chandler said. "You can't fault anybody. We've got to deal with the repercussions."

This is the second straight postseason in which Stoudemire suffered a self-inflicted injury. Last April, Stoudemire pulled a muscle in his back while attempting a dunk in warm-ups prior to Game 2 against the Boston Celtics.

He was limited by the injury for the remainder of the series, which the Knicks lost in four straight.

I guess his hand is okay enough to be tweeting. Just look at his tweets. What a bum!

He should be fined.

hate to say it, but i dont know if it would have made a difference. new york has talent but no synergy. Amare, Chandler, and their shooters desperately need Lin to find them easy looks. that team will be perennial first round exists without a PG to get those front court players involved.

Heat are in trouble now that amare is not there to clog up the paint. Melo will rape the heat at the 4 position now. series will be tied this sunday.

You do realize they can easily just throw Lebron at the 4 to guard him. Or just put a combo of Battier and Lebron like they did down the stretch in game 2.

The problem for the Knicks isn't that Melo not getting any buckets, he's arguably the best scorer in the league, he will find his offense. The problem is the rest of the team playing like crap and they actually had a nice stretch without Amare at the end of the regular season. Amare out means one guy less who's underachieving. Can they beat the Heat? Probably not, but right now, it doesn't make things worse that he's not playing to be honest.

The problem is that NBA players don't get paid for the playoffs so how can they fine him? The league can fine players an X amount but I believe that the teams just fine players a weeks pay or whatever.

That's why I laughed when Metta got suspended without pay, he only had one game left of the money season.

I believe the team will fine him. Doubt We will hear anything about it though.

Players get fines all the time without the public or media knowing about it. Like when they're late to meetings or practice

Amare makes about 250,000 a game (and that's based on a normal 82 game season). I doubt thats how team fines work.

So he didn't punch it like first reported, he slapped it out of frustration thinking it was plastic so when it shattered it sliced right through his hand... doubt he's coming back this postseason.

They really, really need to trade him for some solid players to surround Melo.

just like with Boozer, there likely won't be any team that will be willing to trade for him and his max contract, especially at his age with his wear and tear and back issues. Outside of a straight up swap between Chicago and NY; or perhaps Turkoglu if Orlando wants the local boy Amare for PR reasons, there aren't too many options unless the Knicks are throwing in draft picks or a Shumpert to exchange for another bad contract.

Amare at his cost and injury history has very little trade value. Just like with the Bulls, you are stuck unless you want to swap bad contract for bad contract.

I think the Knicks are going to miss Stat? Everyone thinks Anthony is going to go for crazy in game 3 now that he's at the 4 but Lebron will still be guarding him. I don't think they'll put Battie on Anthony long after Melo started hitting jumpers after the switch was made...

Lebron makes it difficult for any scorer to do their thing. I won't put it past Melo to find ways to score against him but I don't think he's going to be able to score 40 like he did in the regular season. I'd say 20 to 25 is a good number so the rest of the Knicks need to start hitting open jumpers...

michael wallace says it best in this tweet
Bottom line is Heat won comfortably against every reincarnation of the Knicks this season, from 3pt bombers to Linsanity to now.
and here
Playing Melo at PF creates a tremendous matchup problem for 27, 28 other NBA teams. But Heat is the rare squad that doesn't flinch a bit.
