The best 16 records are in the playoffs

Since the 02-03 season 15 WC teams missed the playoffs who would have made them if they were in the East (+1 tie, 16)

In that time period 8 teams have made EC playoffs at under .500 and 1 team has missed the playoffs with at least a .500 record (04-05 Cavs at 42-40)

9 teams have missed the WC playoffs at .500 or better and NONE have made the playoffs with worse than .500 record.

10-11 3 WC lottery teams would have made EC playoffs
09-10 1 team
08-09 1 team (but would have been the 5th seed in the EC)
07-08 3 teams (GS won the most games ever by a team missing the playoffs 48, 4th seed in EC)
06-07 9th seed in WC was tied with 8th seed in EC
05-06 1 team
04-05 1 team
03-04 4 teams!!!
02-03 1 team

Its been a while (few years). Cause the East always had that undeserving 8th seed.

I just did some homework on last year's seeds. Yeah the East was a joke. Indy 8 games under 0.500 made the playoffs. Utah, Phoenix, and Houston would have made it. And Houston at 9th seed in West would have been 6th seed in the East. Yeah thats sad.

2006-07. Orlando were 8th in the East at 40-42, which was tied with the Clippers who were the best team to miss out.

you have to go back to 96-97 for the last time a WC team has made the playoffs at under .500

The 16 best records are in playoffs, but it's far from being the 16 best teams this year.
The West were still much better than the East, but the schedule was ridiculous.

Almost every game cancelled due to the lock-out was vs the opposing conference. Each eastern team plays only 18 games vs the West (27% of the total number of game instead of 37% usually).
It was almost 2 different championships, next year won't be the same.

They need to re-format this. Obviously, the trouble is that you call it the "Eastern Conference Finals, Semi-Finals, ect." and the "Western Conference Finals, Semi-Finals, ect." but the best 16 should play, period.

its only because the east is so weak. If there was more level playing field in the east as well as the west, you would have the 16 teams deserving to be in. Just the way the west is. It does suck for those teams that don't make it though.
