The NBA Players' Association executive committee, at the urging of executive director Billy Hunter, has voted to seek the resignation of union president Derek Fisher, according to a report by Yahoo! Sports.

The report, citing sources, said Fisher has not only refused to resign, but is in the process of gathering the support of players to challenge the business and financial practices of Hunter.

This is not the first time Fisher and Hunter have clashed. The two were central figures in the NBA lockout, and caused a rift between players who forced to take sides.

Just this week, Fisher, according to Yahoo! Sports, convinced the eight-member executive committee to approve an independent auditor to examine Hunter's regime. Still, Hunter convinced that same committee to vote against Fisher.

Hunter, according to the report, had his legal team send a memo to players Tuesday night, informing them the audit had been canceled.

"The executive committee recognized the review was unnecessary since there had been a recent independent audit of the NBPA's finances which raised no issues," read the memo, acquired by Yahoo! Sports.

Fisher, now with the Oklahoma City Thunder, has more than two years left on his appointment as NBPA president, while Hunter still has more than three years left on his contract.

The fight between NBA players union executive director Billy Hunter and president Derek Fisher is escalating, with Hunter hiring a public relations firm and calling for a player representative conference call as early as Friday in an attempt to oust Fisher, sources said Friday morning.

The two union leaders have been at odds since a rumor surfaced during the lockout that Fisher had met privately with commissioner David Stern and deputy commissioner Adam Silver to cut a deal, a rumor that never was substantiated and that some in Fisher's circle now suspect came from Hunter to undermine Fisher's authority, sources said.

The board's attempt to oust Fisher was first reported by Yahoo! Sports.

Fisher sent a letter earlier this week to player reps informing them the union's executive committee had decided that the players union should undergo a business review, according to one Eastern Conference player representative. Several executive committee members, however, were surprised by the tone of the letter because the decision was not unanimous, another source said.

According to several sources, Hunter then contacted each committee member and convinced them that the union already undergoes a regular internal audit and that Fisher's suggestion was both redundant and a personal attack on Hunter's leadership.

The committee, sources say, reversed course on the business review and, as an added measure, agreed to ask Fisher to step down.

Fisher, however, has refused to relinquish his position, prompting Hunter to organize a call among the team player representatives, supposedly to solicit their support for Fisher's ouster. One player representative confirmed that a conference call has been discussed but not yet scheduled, while another said he had not been alerted of one.

Fisher's concerns stem from indications that Hunter has utilized player union funds without executive committee approval, sources said.

Neither Fisher nor the players union could be reached for comment.
