My answer would be Carmelo Anthony. As overrated I think he is, he's still a truly amazing player in crunch time. Someone counted all the last second shots since 2001 and Carmelo was either number 1 or 2 with a large clip.

I agree... I personally find Kobe overrated in last second shots. The only reason I prefer melo is because he can create his own shot off the dribble, instead of having to be fed in the post (Drik can to some extent, but that's not exactly his strength).

Check the "numbers" part of this article. Paul is tied for the most gw makes in the last 8 seconds over the past 4 year span (8 makes.) Hes tied with Melo and Kobe. Now, think of how many kobe and melo have missed, then think of how many Paul has missed.

He not amazing at crunch time, he is amazing at hitting the last second shot but he also creates the need for a last shot to be taken.

A crunch time player will help prevent the situation where a buzzer beater is needed.

Clutch is doing the little things to preserve a lead or doing the little things (and big things) to help your team come back. I hate Kobe with a passion and believe the world would be a better place if he wasn't born but he gets you steals, gets in pass lanes, forces bad shots, and hits big shots at crunch time so he is an elite crunch time player, Melo only hits that shot and nothing else, I wouldn't want him on the floor for my team from 3 seconds to 60 seconds if I want to win, I'd want him out there for those last 3 seconds if I need the shot and for the 47 minutes prior but not that time when truly clutch players do things.

I think the reason CP3 isn't getting more love is because this is about taking the last shot and not about clutch or setting up the last shot. I think, perhaps unfairly, the fact he is a point guard hurts him a bit in this topic despite being a good option for the buzzer beater.

i mean again if you've watched him play 4th quarters, there is no question as to why he is at the top of my list even if you make it a "shoot only" list which seems like a strange exercise anyway.

Exactly. For the 100th time, I would take Paul with the ball in his hands, down 1, 15 seconds to go, over any isolation scorer in the game. You know he will either get a teammate a shot in a great area, or if he needs to, use his 45% in closing moments percentage and get a good look or draw a foul.

I have spent 100 posts on the reasons why Kobe isn't the most clutch. Yes, its his selfishness. The scary part about Kobe in the clutch, is how drastically bad the Lakers offense becomes in those closing moments. They go from 107 points per 100 possessions to under 85. Why? Because everyone in the universe knows where the ball is going, and Kobe isn't giving it up, so he would rather take a tough shot and miss than give it to a player with a much easier shot.

What is the average difference of efficiency between the game as a whole and the closing moments ? You would think any team would less efficient because the other team is probably playing their best possible defense during that time

The Lakers have one of the sharpest dropoffs in the NBA in those situations. 25+ points? Its as bad as you get. The Lakers simply win a ton of games off being the better team and leading down the stretch.
