Mat Latos, RHP____Gio Gonzalez, LHP

Latos had a rough Reds debut on Saturday. He allowed four runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. Latos criticized himself afterwards for trying to be too fine in his debut before a soldout crowd. Latos walked two and struck out four over 81 pitches.

Gonzalez made his Washington and National League debut and had an outing he would probably like to forget. Gonzalez lasted 3 2/3 innings, allowed four runs on seven hits, struck out six batters and walked three against the Cubs.

Jeff Niemann, RHP____Drew Smyly, LHP

Niemann can be dominating, as evidenced by the streak of 10 starts without a loss that he put together last season. The 6-foot-9 right-hander is 1-2 with a 3.48 ERA in five career appearances against the Tigers.

Two years after Smyly was making his name around the SEC circuit at Arkansas, and a year after beginning his pro career, Smyly makes his Major League debut. He beat out a handful of candidates for Detroit's fifth-starter job out of Spring Training.

Dan Haren, RHP____Francisco Liriano, LHP

Haren left a lot of balls up against the Royals on Saturday and paid the price, giving up 11 hits (two of them homers) and five runs in 5 1/3 innings. The 31-year-old's pitch count was at 73 through just four innings.

Liriano couldn't carry over a strong spring into his first start, allowing five earned runs on eights hits over four innings against the O's. He struck out four and walked two, but will be looking to harness his control better against the Angels.

Jason Vargas, LHP
____Derek Holland, LHP

The lefty had two strong outings against the A's in Tokyo and Oakland, allowing just seven hits and three runs in 11 2/3 innings. Now, he takes on a tougher Rangers lineup in Arlington, where he's 1-2 with a 4.55 ERA in six career games.

Holland went six frames vs. the White Sox on Saturday and allowed three runs on three hits. Two of the three runs scored after reaching base on walks. Holland is 5-1 with a 3.17 ERA in six starts and four relief appearances vs. Seattle in his career.

Zack Greinke, RHP____Matt Garza, RHP

Greinke gets his first opportunity to turn around last year's home-road splits. He was 11-0 with a 3.13 ERA in his debut season at Miller Park, versus 5-6 with a 4.70 ERA everywhere else.

Garza had another tough-luck outing in his first start of the season, leaving with a lead only to see it disappear late at Wrigley on Saturday. In three career starts vs. the Brewers, he's 2-1 with a 4.35 ERA.

Madison Bumgarner, LHP____Jamie Moyer, LHP

Though Bumgarner's career is clearly on the upswing, his lifetime numbers are intriguing. He currently owns a 20-20 career record, including 9-9 at home and 11-11 on the road. His day-night splits are almost as balanced. Bumgarner is 7-8 in day games and 13-12 under the

Moyer gave up two home runs and four runs (three earned) in five innings. Three errors in the fourth inning drove up Moyer's pitch count. He missed with some close pitches in the first inning for balls, but was competitive.

Mark Buehrle, LHP____Joe Blanton, RHP

Buehrle made his Marlins and NL debut on April 5 at Cincinnati. He labored early, needing 28 pitches to get through the first inning. He lasted six innings, giving up two earned runs on seven hits over 108 pitches. He walked two and struck out five.

The Phillies didn't need their fifth starter until April 15, but they didn't want Blanton to wait that long to pitch, so he's going to make his debut in the series finale against Miami. He's hoping to rebound from an injury-marred 2011.

Ian Kennedy, RHP____Anthony Bass, RHP

Kennedy didn't feel like he had his best command during his Opening Day start against the Giants, but he still managed to allow only three runs over 6 2/3 innings. In three starts against the Padres in 2011, Kennedy was 3-0 with a 1.74 ERA.

Bass gets the start in the final game of the series against the D-backs, filling in for Dustin Moseley, who is on the disabled list with a shoulder injury. He impressed the team in Spring Training and figured to be a rotation candidate at some point.

Jeff Karstens, RHP____Chris Capuano, LHP

Manager Clint Hurdle expects Karstens to "run with this opportunity" to be in the season-opening rotation, and he got off to a fast start with six innings of five-hit ball Saturday. When he keeps the ball down, the righty is very tough.

Chris Capuano cruised through four innings against the Padres, then couldn't throw a strike, walking a total of five and not getting out of the fifth inning. He said he will attack the strike zone more aggressively next time.
