View Full Version : How do teams travel?

Kind of a random question. When teams travel to and from different cities do they always travel by air? I understand in Houston/San Antonio/Dallas that buses could work but does the league make enough money to get these guys to just take planes everywhere?

I don't expect anyone to have a definite answer lol but I was just thinking about this and was wondering if someone knew the answer.

Planes for across states and for interstate over a certain number of miles. I assume SA/DAL/HOU would take a team bus as well as SAC/GSW, but I'm not sure about, let's say, LA/SAC. Probably a plane for that

I am pretty sure most teams have private planes which fly them...but sometimes it would make sense to go by bus

If guys are getting paid as much as $30M/yr (Kobe's salary for 2014) and the league minimum is around $300+K/yr, I think it may be safe to say they can afford to fly when necessary.

Airport to hotel and hotel to arena they have two buses. Usually spaced in time by at least 45 minutes... The "stars" take the second bus unless they've scheduled early treatment or are keeners like ray allen and like being the first on the floor to practice.

they usually charter big planes with less seats in them (like 50 setas instead of 150)

They charter planes from a company named Miami Air. I actually work on them quite a bit in Chicago and have had the pleasure of meeting the Heat, Nuggets, and Magic. Some teams also have private planes. Also, the MLB and NHL also use them.

i work for Delta and deal with the pilots and flight attendants for Delta flights. Delta has agreements with a number of professional teams (MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, womans pro sports, college teams) and other airlines charter for other teams.... we set up charter flights for teams and they usually travel right after their game. flight usually departs about an hour and a half or so after the game ends

SA to HOU 3-4 hours by car
SA to DAL 5 hours by car
HOU to DAL 4 hours by car
LA to SAC 6+ hours by car
LA to GSW 6+ hours by car

I guarantee you they fly for all of these. ROFL just cause cities are in the same state doesn't make them close to each other. There are probably 20-40 out of state routes closer than these teams. NY to PHI, MIL to CHI etc.

You'd think eventually there would be a horrible crash and an entire team would be wiped out..
