The board of governors is voting next month on the possibility of selling advertising space somewhere on the league jerseys. This could potentially be implemented as early as this years playoffs.

Various sources and accounts.

They do this in Europe, so I'm not surprised.

The question is will people buy player's jerseys with the advertisements on them?

God, that would suck. Total sell out if it happens. We would be going from Bob Cousy jerseys ys with only the word "Celtic" on it, to this: http://www.google.com/imgres?q=european+basketball+jersey&start=67&um=1&hl=en&rlz=1C1CHMA_en___US353&biw=1440&bih=809&tbm=isch&tbnid=JH5tKe6ncFjWqM:&imgrefurl=http://www.nba.com/warriors/news/2011_mock_drafts.html&docid=t6rLGe3Me-7rkM&imgurl=http://www.nba.com/warriors/photos/Mock2011_Valanciunas_325.jpg&w=325&h=325&ei=xsxzT-L5JuiK2gXRytTtDg&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=1174&vpy=419&dur=169&hovh=225&hovw=225&tx=166&ty=139&sig=113562938661139369726&page=3&tbnh=149&tbnw=130&ndsp=37&ved=1t:429,r:7,s:67

If they do this "because of Europe" they better give of less commercials because thats why Europe does it.

Quick! Run to the store and buy all the jerseys before this happens.

They won't do it "because Europe does it"...they'll do it because it will make them more money.

People will still buy. Soccer jerseys are as popular as anything, advertisements and all. Unless they're sponsored by Wal Mart, Taco Bell, Goldman Sachs, BP or some other ****** franchise, fans will still buy 'em.

well, no scrawny high school kid is going to be wearing NBA jerseys to school if this does end up happening.

I dislike the idea, you play for the team, not the team's sponsor.

You play for whoever pays you. As a player I wouldn't care if it's the owner of the club or Colgate.

I don't mind it. A lot of sports jerseys have advertising on them.

In the begining americans may ( or may not) be not inclined too.

But at the end of the day people will buy them.

I mean euro teams send Millions of jerseys with their publicity on, in fact a change of the brand at the front usually raises sales because the old logo jersey got outdated.

I hate it anyway.

NBA sure knows how to make the game ugly.... thank god for march madness

So typical of us Americans.
It's a fantastic idea. Hey, i own a Manchester Untied Jersey and i'm buying a new one the moment they change sponsors.
Barcelona had a classic one with the UNICEF advertisement.

Maybe one day the NBA will entertain the idea of relegating awful teams to the DL at the end of every season instead of rewarding them with high Draft picks.

if the nba is going to allow teams to put a logo of some kind on team jerseys shouldn't players be allowed to sell some real estate on the jerseys they where, like if kevin love wanted to have an old spice body wash logo he should be allowed to have it

Watching European teams, I was wondering when this would happen. I sincerely hope it doesn't, because it's just ugly. I just imagine a picture of the Celtic greats, or any team with a historic past, with pictures of Cousy, Russell, Havlicek, Bird, McHale, Parrish, Pierce, Allen, Garnett and then a picture of Rondo with a Viagra on his stomach and a Walmart logo on his shoulder. It's just lame.

Some non-jokey questions I have:

Wouldn't this conflict with their established shoe, Gatorade, Old-Spice contracts? The owners would have to draft new contracts for every player and take some of these companies to court if they had an exclusive deal....ex, Kia and Subway already have Blake Griffin locked in a deal. And maybe they don't want him to also have McDonalds and Ford patches on his jersey.

Would the advertisers have to be league wide? The lockout was about revenue disparity, mostly, so you can't just slap a GM patch on the Lakers and let the Raptors make due with Frank's Snow-cone Emporium or something. Wheaties pays a lot of money to get WINNERS on their box of cereal, who is going to want to have their product associated with a 9 win team?

I wouldn't rock an NBA jersey if there a giant McD's logo on the front

Here is an example of what it would look like: http://halestormsports.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/smith_jr_640.jpg

It's not that bad.

Wolves sponsor the Target franchise, Knicks sponsor is Chase bank, Bobcats sponsor is Time Warner Cable, Raptors sponsor is Rogers, etc.

The Jerseys shouldn't change at all however.
