Does anyone understand why MLB has opening day for some teams but other teams are still having spring training games and don't start opener for another week.

Because they want to try and have a presence in Japan.

Also because they are functionally ********.

It's just the Athletics and Mariners who are playing a special series in Japan. Everyone else will open in the first week of April.

Im not fond of the idea of having games in Japan at this time of the year...maybe at the same time (or a few days before) the regular season starts, but not a week early.

I just think it's idiotic to have some teams start there season early then other teams, just start at same time

I dont mind opening day for some teams and not everyone...i dont even mind kicking off the mlb season in japan

What i have a problem with is there was an opening day game the first game of the mlb season and it wasnt even telecasted! I looked at the bottom line this morning and saw a 1-1 tie in the 10th and then i saw opening da and im like okay i flipped to the other espn channels and mlb network with no game!

Its like the cowboys and giants kicking off the nfl season on wednesday but instead of playing in the states they play in london and the game isnt nationally televised...not on fox or cbs or any espn or not even the nfl network

How are you gonna kick off a season that no one can watch unless your in japan/oakland and seattle areas or you paid for mlb league pass or mlbtv thats just stupid

The first game of the season needs to be on tv that people can go to...not pay extra for so stupid

Because they want to market their game on a global scale, like every other sport is doing, and this is the best time to do so..

This and I deleted the part the only applies to the poster because only someone that the deleted would apply to would say that or think that way and I feel it does nothing but severely hurt a good point and looks and sounds weak and classless.

I wonder if they were just spring training games if the attendance and appeal would have been the same in Japan.

This league is run by Bud Selig. That is your answer.

Yeah, this whole Japan thing to start out the year is pretty stupid, never understood it.

It's a stupid idea. You have teams playing regular season games while there are still spring training games happening. I'm all for growing the game internationally and all but have a series in the summer.
