View Full Version : BREAKING NEWS! Grizzlies sign Gilbert Arenas

Fresno
03-19-2012, 06:06 PM
Free agent guard Gilbert Arenas worked out for the Grizzlies this morning and the team is preparing to sign him to a deal for the rest of this season, according to sources close to the process.

Arenas appeared slender and shot the ball well during the workout. He is scheduled to take a physical this afternoon. All that would remain is for Arenas to pass the physical and agree to a prorated veteran’s minimum contract requiring the Griz to pay about $300,000.

The deal, if completed in the next day or two, would allow Arenas to join the Grizzlies later this week in Portland. The Griz begin a four-game West Coast trip tomorrow at Sacramento.

You know what's funny, he was linked to the Lakers earlier this year who actually drafted Javaris Crittenton... then LA traded Crittenton to Memphis. Both Crittenton and Gil played in Washington.

So it was destiny

I dont get the arenas bashing? Is he really THAT bad now?

He was just one of the best nba offensive players a few years back. All star too i believe? Got 100+ million/multi year contract too right? I remember him being a huge offensive force that could penetrate and hit 3's as well. How did he go downhill so fast/much?

Not saying that he is still the player he once was but the Magic didn't give him a chance.

Offensively, he was a FORCE. But he's absolute trash now.

Great move for the Griz

I actually see a lot of similarities in the Arenas-Butler-Jamison lineup in Washington a few years ago and Arenas-Gay-Randolph. I love that the Griz now have him as a "weapon" on their bench (if he finds his shot - because it got lost in the shuffle somewhere). This definitely doesn't hurt their bench or their payroll, so it's a good move.

People act like he is gonna get 25+ minutes he will get 15 max.

This had to be done Mike Conley was playing 46 47 minutes a game Mayo Played some PG but it took away from what he does best score. This will free up Mayo and give Conley some rest for the 4th.

He should have been starting in Orlando, I honestly believe that.

IT is all going to depend on if he has any burst now. People have said he has looked more explosive in his workouts this year.

Good pick up for Griz. High reward low risk signing. He now gets a chance to prove he still belong in NBA

Funny that Griz seem to have a soft spot for declining old stars....remember Iverson? No one was willing to sign him but they gave him a chance. Only that he didn't make use of it...

current declining players can relax knowing they will eventually find a home in memphis as they age;)

And also, GA showed in Orl that he doesnt have to shoot. He didnt play very well but he wasnt just launching the ball.

Don't understand why the Grizz want him.

They have Conley and Allen as the starting back-court and Mayo as the 1st guard off the bench. What dynamic does Gilbert bring to the table?

Shooting. Both with the ball and a gun. ;) Aha, I used to love Arenas. Sucks that he's declined so much.

BREAKING NEWS!

He'll make more each quarter he'd theoretically play if he was still playing for the Magic (he's still getting paid) than he'll get for the rest of the season.

Shows how little demand there was for him, and probably rightfully so. Dude hasn't been great in 5 years, and hasn't even been OK in 3.

That's the problem you have 3 players playing 2 or 3 position(Allen plays foward alot)Conley is the only PG he is getting alot of minutes and killing the team if he gets into foul trouble.

The Grizzlies had to make a move for a vet guard. Also it won't hurt the grizzlies with money.

IT is all going to depend on if he has any burst now. People have said he has looked more explosive in his workouts this year.

Did you ever watch him play in Orlando though? He was garbage. He even admitted he was afraid to jump. He couldn't get around an oak tree if it was standing in front of him last year, let alone an NBA defender. He had 3-4 good games all year with us, and they were "good games" because he hit a few threes.

People getting their hopes up about Arenas are probably just gonna be let down. Like I said, it hasn't been "a few years" since he was great, it's been half a decade. Unless he really was like 50% the last few years, and now he's magically 100%, there's no reason to think he's got anything left in the tank. If he had anything left, don't you think an actual contender with a need at back up PG (Miami, LAL, OKC etc.) would have picked him up for this cheap?

i still think he can contribute. I believe he'll be much better than when he was in Orl. He's going to be solid for them, not great, but decent bench player in their guard rotation.

He'll relieve Conley at the point. We need a veteran presence to help through the rest of the season and playoffs,

Coach Lionel, is in love with Conley. Conley will see 35-40 minutes a night come playoff time easily. Arenas will only be playing 10-15 minutes per night as the back up PG. If he wants to play more he has to show out.

If OJ Mayo plays like he has some talent, OJ PT come playoff time could be as much as 30-35 minutes off the bench, similar to last playoff series against the Thunder. If not, it will be 20-25 minute range.
