View Full Version : Derek Fisher reaches buyout with Rockets, will look to sign with a contender

Derek Fisher has reached a buyout agreement with the Houston Rockets and is expected to become a free agent once he clears waivers, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Fisher, 37, was traded to the Rockets on Thursday with a 2012 first-round draft pick for forward Jordan Hill. Fisher became expendable after the Los Angeles Lakers acquired point guard Ramon Sessions from the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Fisher will likely have a deal with a contender soon. A new rule in the collective bargaining agreement doesn’t allow him to get bought out after a trade and re-sign with the Lakers this season. Fisher had a $3.4 million player option on his 2012-13 contract.

Fisher averaged 5.9 points and 25.5 minutes for the Lakers this season.

What's interesting is that with the new CBA, he can't resign with the Lakers. No more "Big Z" type situations where he was able to resign with the Cavs after they traded him to the Wizards.

He can't defend anymore and he can't shoot anymore. He's only a good pickup for leadership purposes at this point.

I think OKC makes sense, just be a like leader/coach out there, he won't play much at all, but his experience is nice.

Miami doesn't need him, Chicago doesn't, Spurs maybe as a backup with Ford going down?

why does any contender need him?
He was important in l.a because of the veterany with the team and the chemistry.
In other team he will be just an OLD new dude.

I could see the Clips or Magic making sense.... I know everyone's first thoughts are Miami (because everyone assumes that of every old vet looking for a ring) but Derek might not care as much since he has a championship pedigree... Plus with Chalmers and Cole, I don't see how Fisher could get any minutes there.

He's definitely a great player/coach and a voice of reason in the locker room to keep some young teams in check, which is why I think the Clippers is a nice fit.

That's what I want him for on the HEAT.

Cole seriously needs a mentor on how to play his role.

But I think Fisher wants minutes wherever he signs.

I'd only want him on the Magic if he strictly played with Chris Duhon. The thought of a Fisher/Duhon back court excites me to levels you guys probably can't comprehend...

I think OKC would be a good fit...not that I really think he's a "good fit" anywhere.

Hes not a useful player at all. Like someone said, whatever team he ends up with is only getting a player that can provide leadership. So to me a team like the Heat doesnt make sense because they dont need that, I really dont know who needs that.

God manram ... a duhon fisher back court????? Your just asking for a disaster

Duhon should never see a basketball court ever in his life and fisher is getting old enough where he shouldnt see a basketball court either

Though i cant lie now im getting excited so i can see diaster happen...i just dont want it for my team :sigh:

What can Fisher provide other than leadership? He's a good shooter, and might provide some needed outside range for a contender, but that's about it.

I really would like to see him sign with OKC. He won't add much off the bench, but a veteran with so much leadership skills does a lot for a young team like that.

Clippers are way too deep at PG to even consider him. Billups is riding the Bench with his injury right now. He provides the same leadership and support that Fisher would.

I think he may just retire; the problem is he sees himself as a starter and he might just be 3rd string for most teams right about now.

Yeah that's called a cheap shot. you'd be pissed too if it was the other way around. That's no reason to assume that all Rockets fans hate him though. I always liked Fisher and still do even after seeing that clip for the first time. I think everybody knows though that he is over the hill, and obviously Lakers fans don't seem that sad to see him go either.

The Heat makes sense.

That team occasionally has either vocal leadership or directional lapses from time to time. Fisher is a glue guy that knows what it takes to win. Don't underestimate his intangibles. Just imagine him taking the leadership burden off the shoulders of Bosh, Wade and LeBron, thus freeing them to play their games. Fish may be 37, but he is a MAJOR infusion of "get your mind right" that any team could use. He is your floor general when Coach Spo's playcalling and inexperience comes up short.

Plus, Fish has to go to a place where the physical talent is so great that they can offset his deficiencies. Wade and LeBron could do that easily.

Lastly, someone mentioned that they want to see Laker fans turn on him. Won't happen.

It's not like he had a say in being traded in the first place.

It would be a different story if he was our top player and held our entire organization hostage for months on end, flipping back and forth, then left to play for the Celtics of his own volition, and completely destroyed the Lakers in the Finals. THEN we would give him hell, and deservedly so.

I'll cheer for Fish no matter where he goes. He's one of my favorite Lakers of all time. His fingerprints are on way too many Lakers titles and great playoff moments to hate him.

He still has value but not like how La used him as a starter. 15min player player coach imo very good for a young team to teach them how to win and stay tight Bulls, okc, indy, Orlando everyone knows Howard need guidance. No locker room was worst than Kobe/Shaq. I could also see him on Spurs to although not young his style fits. But i would say his options are thin.

If I'm Fisher I might want to stick it to the Lakers a bit, so I'd call the Clippers, Spurs, and Thunder, and maybe the Bulls. I think Fisher can be a difference maker on the bench for them. I don't see him as a good fit for the Heat (edit: the Heat can use him, but personality wise I think he clashes so I see Pat Riley staying away, of course I could be wrong about that) and I don't like him in Memphis.
