Dallas' own 2012 first round draft pick to the L.A. Lakers (top 20 protected in the 2012 draft, top 20 protected in 2013, top 20 protected in 2014, top 20 protected in 2015, top 20 protected in 2016, top 20 protected in 2017 and unprotected in the 2018 Draft). [Dallas - L.A. Lakers, 12/11/2011]

A potential early 20's pick in a deep and talented draft, all to save money and possibly destroy chemistry by throwing the team captain under the bus. Panic move no.3 of the season (odom no.1, sessions no.2 as they couldve had crawford instead).

Throwing away two draft picks for moves that will not make Lakers close to contending this playoffs.

Welcome to the Jim Buss era

hmm... odd trade.

is Jordan Hill even worth a late 1st round pick?

I know that Fischer is Old and Slow. but he's kind of dependable in terms of experience and locker room chemistry.

Houston said they are going to buy him out anyway, because they have Lowery. looks like an inside deal and Fischer will resign with the Lakers at a minimum.

Fish brought intangibles; he was a glue guy. Who is now the "Vocal leader" for the lakers with Odom and fish gone?

I love Fish but long term this was a great trade. Gets us younger, more athletic, and deeper at the 4/5. All things that the Lakers needed. Fish is a pro, he'll probably help Houston get to the playoffs and give them leadership they need. Plus you know Lakers will bring him back as soon as he retires as assistant coach.

Why are people mentioning the pick? You know its coming from Dallas right? It wasn't going to be high anyway. And with Hill/Goudlock/ Ebanks its not like they're starving for a rookie......

except they cant. the new CBA says a player that is traded and bought out in the same year cant resign with the team that traded them until the end of the playoffs to prevent stuff like this or how Big Z was traded for jamison and then bought out and went back to the cavs a couple years ago

I don't know much about hill but he look like he can rebound for sure. We get to keep Pau and that is a plus as far as am concerned. We should be destroying pple on the boards!

This trade was supposed to be for Beasley but it fell through according to NBA TV. I would be pissed if I was a Laker fan Beasley is the far superior talent. I think a mix of Sessions and Beasley puts them right in contention. As it stands now still behind OKC and maybe San Antonio.

I love the Sessions deal.

think this deal is a bad idea. The Lakers chose to save money today. They are absorbing the TE from the Odom deal.

The Lakers essentially traded Lamar Odom, and Derek Fisher for Jordan Hill.

The Lakers should have moved Blake, kept Fisher on the bench, moved the first and the TE for Beasley or Felton. Now there is a cluster **** on the bench for bigs. This new kid, McRoberts, and Murphy. Would have been great to pair sessions and felton at the PG position, or bring in more bench talent with Beasley.

Is the deadline officially over? moving the voice of the locker room and a first round pick for a nobody big? doesn't make any sense.

I could be wrong but don't TEs have to be used in the season they were aquired? I'm pretty sure if we don't trade it or use it, it just gets absorbed.

Today, the Lakers saved a lot of money for next year (Walton+Fisher+Absorbing TE), and they got the PG in sessions.

I only wish Blake was moved. and that the te was used to bring in more talent on the bench.

Luke is making 6.1 mill next year not counting what he's owed this year. Lakers can now amnesty Artest who is still owed 15 Mill over the next two.

Lakers potentially save 21 mill in cap space instead of 15 mill.

Why does that make the trade bad for Cavs? Your reasoning makes no sense. I highly doubt Artest would be amnestied with the defense he's been playing. I don't care if he can't score because he locks down the opponent's best perimeter player.

You guys are reading too much into these draft picks. I will repeat what I said i the Lakers forum. Late first round draft picks are not going to do this Laker team any good. Our window with Kobe and Gasol is not very long. We simply do not have the time to develop unproven players or have them contribute immediately. I don't care how "deep" you think the draft is. It is a crapshoot when you get in the 20s. The Lakers haven't even had a good history of selecting quality players consistently when the picks are late (exception Marc Gasol). Even with promising players in the draft, a majority of them simply do not perform as well in the NBA. The Lakers don't need to take that risk right now, especially given who we have on this team. Just look at the last couple years and see how many draft picks the Lakers actually kept...a lot of them were cut or sent to D-league. I am fine with the trades that were made. Not the greatest, but at least we get a better PG and some athleticism. Most importantly, LUKE WALTON IS GONE!

I'm not saying it's a bad deal for Cavs, I'm saying that the Lakers had a great deal.

You think Ron won't be amnestied in the summer if he fails to show any improvement on offense? He's owed $15 mill, and he'll be 34 in the final year of his deal. He'll be amnestied.

two young studs?? Jordan Hill and that Congo guy shooting 15% FROM THE FIELD. YES 15% FROM THE FIELD YOU READ THAT RIGHT BROSEPH

You're blind if you can't say this Fisher move was strictly to save cash. We gave up our last line of locker room chemistry and a top 20 draft pick in this epic 2012 draft to save a few bucks that could have been made up with a game or two of ticket sales alone.

The Fisher move was mostly to save cash no question, and realistically Jordan Hill is better than Troy Murphy.

The Lakers didn't need 3 pg's either, having Fish around would've caused locker room trouble. Fish wants to play, he wouldn't be happy with being a bench warmer. So LA dealt him.

Yea for every game he wins for the Lakers...he loses about 4 or 5 when he lets opposing pgs torch him, or when he goes 1-8 with 2pts and 2 assists...

Sure Fish can and has hit big shots, but at this point in his career the occasional big shots no longer outweigh his other weaknesses..

Mad respect for fish. Great player for us over the years. You don't realize how many games he cost us over the years because he let scrubs go off on him.

Just last Night Vazquez and Jack were torching fish, Stuckey did the same too. That was just in the last 4 games. . .

Exactly. People are just being sentimental and living in the past now. Fisher helped us win championships, but he was becoming more and more of a liability. He was so frustrating to watch against all the fast PGs in the league. Hate to see him go, but this had to happen.

Why do people keep saying "top 20 pick?" It's coming from the Mavs do you think they will have a horrible record or something? Unless they completely fall off traditionally playoff teams don't draft that high.....

two young studs?? Jordan Hill and that Congo guy shooting 15% FROM THE FIELD. YES 15% FROM THE FIELD YOU READ THAT RIGHT BROSEPH

You're blind if you can't say this Fisher move was strictly to save cash. We gave up our last line of locker room chemistry and a top 20 draft pick in this epic 2012 draft to save a few bucks that could have been made up with a game or two of ticket sales alone.

Hill makes more money than Fish next year so if the Lakers exercise his option then it's clearly not just a money saving move. The draft pick the Lakers traded is top 16 protected, so if the Mavs make it out of the first round this year then it definitely won't be a top 20 pick.

And I'm pretty sure Zefflin wasn't referring to Christian Eyenga as a young stud, he was calling Hill and Sessions both young studs. Eyenga is 22 who has taken 19 shots this year (sample size?) He shot 42.5% last year, not great by any means, but significantly higher than you give him credit for.

hill isnt even close to a stud. he couldnt get consistent playing time on a rockets roster with 1 guy over like 6'9" who got consistent playing time. also the rockets already declined his team option when the deadline passed, i dont know if the lakers can change that

Ding ding, but man I like it, I'm a happy camper and after we stomp Minny again everyone will be talking about the lakers again...or more.

Yes Sessions will be clutch and everyone will forget about fish in one game.

This trade was just about a straight wash. The Lakers got rid of salary 3.4 mill next year for Fish at age 38. While taking back a young big who is better than Murphy, probably McBob too.

Houston got a protected first rounder, which is likely to be a mid to low 20s pick this year unless the Mavs completely tank

I would've loved it if we could have somehow got rid of McBob's contract as well.

Mavs pick is protected so if they tank, they get a pick this year. I still can't believe Mitch was able to trade Fisher. D-league teams wouldn't want him. Mitch is truly amazing. *not sarcastic* Bye Fisher you don't deserve a 6th ring.

Yeah agree with you on everything shep... Jordan Hill is better than Murphy... has 2 more years left including the qualifying offer... Guess what? we have 2 more years of Kobe, pau, blake and artest... If we resign drew next year he will be the only 1 with more than 2 years of contract.. So Hill provide us with a decent back up at 4/5 for the next 2 years..

As for the 1st rounder, indeed the draft is deep but it also comes down to evaluating talent. And if dallas fall to the 6-8 slot in the west there is a big possibilty they keep that pick..

They are currently 7th in the West and Miami, Chicago, Orlando, Philadelphia, Indiana, Atlanta and Boston all have better records than them.

Odds are Dallas gets a top 20 pick.

The difference between 3rd and 7th in the west is only 3 games, so let's not act like the mavs are locked into a low seed. Heck they could end up with HCA on round 1. Also the hawks are like .002% better record wise an Boston isn't. Basically the only teams pretty much guaranteed to have a better record than the mavs are OKC, SA, MIA, ORL, and CHI

I don't like that we gave up a first, but we saved a ton of money. We save money on Fish's deal this year, and he said he was going to opt in next year which saved us 3.4 mill against the cap + the lux tax.

http://espn.go.com/blog/los-angeles/lakers/post/_/id/28332/lakers-trade-deadline-how-it-went-down

According to a source familiar with the negotiations, Minnesota backed out of a three-team deal also involving L.A. and Portland at 11:53 a.m. PT, just seven minutes before the noon PT deadline. The trade that was in place would have sent Fisher to Minnesota and the Lakers’ first-round pick acquired in the Lamar Odom trade with Dallas back in December to Portland. Portland, already engaged in a full-fledged fire sale, would have sent Jamal Crawford to Minnesota and the Timberwolves would have sent Anthony Tolliver to Portland. Minnesota would have also been receiving cash considerations from both L.A. and Portland as well.

But, Minnesota owner Glen Taylor and general manager David Kahn pulled out of the deal at the last minute (well, eighth-to-last minute), leaving L.A. officials “puzzled and disappointed” according to a source. Who knows what changed Minnesota’s mind. Maybe it didn’t feel comfortable being on the hook for $3.4 million for a 38-year-old Fisher in 2012-13. Maybe it was concerned that Crawford would opt out of his relatively bargain price of $5 million for next season. L.A. didn’t have time to wallow in the uncertainty trying to figure out the answer. Instead, it scrambled to put together a secondary deal with the Rockets before the trade deadline passed.
