I'm not sure this really solves the fact that Lin-Melo-Amare-Chandler's games still need to mesh but it is a shot in the arm and Woodson will get them playing better defense. It should be enough to get them to get back in the playoffs. They have too much talent to fail this badly.

Mike D’Antoni has resigned as coach of the New York Knicks, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

D’Antoni and Knicks owner James Dolan agreed on Wednesday to end his three-plus-years run as Knicks coach, a source said. “It was a mutual decision to no longer coach the Knicks … conflicting visions of the club’s future,” the source said.

D’Antoni had clashed with Carmelo Anthony after the trade brought the All-Star forward to the Knicks a year ago, and he could never get the Anthony to buy into his system.

The Knicks have lost six consecutive games to nearly drop them out of the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Assistant Mike Woodson, who formerly coached the Atlanta Hawks, will take over as the interim coach.

D'antoi had good years in Phoenix. In 2006 Amare was hurt and they made the WCF. In 2007 they got robbed with Amare suspended. He had a lot of bad breaks and had to deal with the mighty Spurs. The problem is Melo is a one way player. Amare wasn't the problem. He played with a good PG in this system before. The problem is Melo. If you replaced Melo with Deng for the Knicks they would be fine.

Some guys think just because a system hasn't won a title, means it can't. He got pretty close in Phoenix.

Absolutely the right move here.

After watching D'Antoni try to coach an assortment of different Knicks teams during his tenure, it became stunningly clear that he simply is not that great of a coach, certainly not the "offensive genius" he was touted to be. Simply put, if you can't get a team like the Knicks to score points, you are no offensive genius.

As for his success in PHX, his Knick years highlight the fact that his success was due solely to the amazing talent of Steve Nash.

With Woodson at the helm hopefully the Knicks can get back to scoring the ball, as well as paying attention to D.

And Lin will be fine ...haters.

Interesting move. I dont know how I feel about this just yet. A move had to be made for the better of the team. I think right now, this seems like the correct move. They werent going to let Carmelo go instead, the team has a ton of talent but also a ton of ego's. I honestly think this is the case. As much as my fellow Knicks fans want to pin this on Mike D and say now the Knicks will turn it around, I don't think its that simple. Lin and Amare are Mike D type of players. Lin said earlier in the year that Mike D was a genius and Amare has spent his whole career in Mike's system. I can't imagine those guys are 100% on board with the idea of a new system. On the other hand, you have Melo who loves his iso's and post ups. And the fact that the Knicks were winning w/o Melo is probably not lost on the players.

Adrian Wojnarowski was just on the Jim Rome show. Said D'Antoni did not lose the locker room. It's basically the locker room vs Melo, right now, according to Woj.

More confirming Knicks players are upset by the move:

Having just gotten out of the shower, I can confirm what others reporting: D'Antoni resigned. Players stunned/upset.

“Dolan is blaming the coach,” said a source with knowledge of the Knicks’ locker-room dynamics. “Tyson [Chandler], Baron [Davis], A’mare [Stoudemire] – guys who came to play for Mike – or that system – are pissed. [Jeremy] Lin isn’t happy either.”

Its the players fault as much as the coaching staff.

Lin and Amare LOVES D'Antoni.
Amare played his whole career with him.

Melo cant play in D'Antoni's system and forced him out.

I see a divide in the locker room. you only fixed half your problems NY.

I wished they would just trade Melo, so they can just cancel the Lala Vasquez reality show.

Watching Woodson for many years coach the Hawks, i thought he was pretty bad. The only play he ever ran was iso Joe Johnson, he let Josh Smith do whatever he wanted and never made adjustments during game. He let Joe take as many shots as he wanted when he should've been giving more plays and shots to Horford. I would actually like Mike D in atlanta because Drew is just terrible.

So let Carmelo Anthony run those same isolation plays what is the difference. You think James Dolan paying 18 mil plus to watch Landry Fields (or JR Smith) to clang it off the side of the rim.

Ohhhhh yes now my boy melo can shut the rest of ya up i say 25 30 point game for melo 20 for stat and a win. Melo had nothing to do with the sucess or the failure in this stretch of games since lin/ it was all pringles putting melo in the game and not wanting to want to use him which causes rifts in the team

Until teams figure out that your team only has one play. He doesnt control his players and these knicks seem like they need someone with balls who will sit you down if you dont rebound or play defense. But yeah you will be seeing a lot of Melo iso. But this definitely isnt the long term solution for the knicks probably just until the end of the year.

source? he lost melo...melo was ****ing that team up and that wont change.

melo out=knicks win

melo in=knicks lose

explain how a coach makes a difference in that equation?

blahblahyoutoo
03-14-2012, 03:51 PM

So by that logic, Phil Jackson was only a good coach because he had mj and Kobe right?

I am one of the few people that said LBJ and Wade on the same team sounds good but doesnít really spells championships because they donít complement each other game. I went on to say, Melo and Stud sounds good but Iím not buying into it because they donít complement each other game. We are talking about two face up Forwards! Címon man, you have to be a damn good coach to utilize 2 explosive players at the same position, that being said, I believe Phil ability to design, redesign and adjust the triangle to complement the talent he has is amazing.
I always believed that Phil would be back coaching but I really thought it would have been with the heats.

It didn't hurt his chances at success, did it?

Point is, having all time great players makes it easier for a coach. And Nash definitely made dantonis schemes look like bball genius when in fact it was really just "shoot if you're open," which Nash is quite good at doing.

Mike D'Antoni was never the right guy for the Knicks job...even from Day 1. I am ecstatic that he is gone so I no longer have to see him look miserable on the sideline, or call timeout and yell at the players to "run, run, run!"...the guy didn't know what he was doing with his roster. Yes Linsanity was amazing but it was more a product of the weak schedule and the fact that no one had a scouting report on Lin.

People will bash Melo forever, but he's our star player and needs the ball X amount of times to be successful. He needs the ball in his hands and he's being paid a lot to be the guy...he's a 25 ppg career player and yes he can be a winner with the right guys around him.
