Five Years of Every NBA Shot Attempt, Visualized

Follow this link (http://gizmodo.com/5892424/five-years-of-every-nba-shot-attempt-visualized) to see the main chart and accompanying article.

And follow this link (http://www.sloansportsconference.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Goldsberry_Sloan_Submission.pdf) [PDF] to go deeper and see the original paper by Kirk Goldsberry that it came from, which includes several individual player charts.

Pretty cool stuff, and as Sebastian Pruiti said (https://twitter.com/#!/SebastianPruiti/status/179227530648227840) (if you're not following him on twitter, you should be - this link comes via him), the chart "does a great job of showing why most defenses in the NBA are determined to take away layups and corner threes while living w/mid range Js".

Nothing really too surprising.

Most inefficient shots: midrange shots at an angle, and any shot just inside the three point arch.

Most efficient: corner threes and anything at the rim...and midrange shots right up the middle.

It's very symmetrical too, which is to be expected. I was trying to see if either side seemed better, and I guess the side to the left of the rim (pretending you're looking at the rim on a court) looks to be a little better.

So a team like Orlando... who takes a ton of 3's and has the best C in the game kinda has it right when it comes to PPP?

I guess they just need more quality players.
