Minnesota Timberwolves rookie point guard Ricky Rubio will have an MRI on his left knee Saturday morning amid fears he tore his anterior cruciate ligament, a league source told Yahoo! Sports.

“Possible ACL,” the source briefed on Rubio’s condition said. “We’ll know more after the MRI. … There’s a lot of worry right now.”

Rubio’s knee buckled with 16.4 seconds left of the Timberwolves’ loss to the Los Angeles Lakers Friday night in Minneapolis. He came across to trap Kobe Bryant and crumbled to the floor as Bryant collided into him while trying to dribble out of the trap. Rubio immediately grabbed his knee and remained on the floor for a few moments until teammates carried him to the bench.

A torn ACL would end Rubio’s season.

Rubio, 21, has played an immense role in the T’wolves’ revival, partnering with power forward Kevin Love to push Minnesota into playoff contention in the Western Conference. For the season, Rubio has averaged 10.5 points, 8.2 assists and 2.2 steals. His flashy passing and gutsy play-making has made him one of the league’s most popular young players.

A torn ACL.. that just sucks for him and the Wolves especially with the success they've had.

Kobe did this to Bynum as well... and now has a history of knee injuries. Hopefully Rubio doesn't suffer the same fate.

That's unfortunate for Rubio if it's true.

Also, it's weird getting ACL torn this way; trying to get a charge with both feet on the ground. Perhaps he locked his knee during the collision. I wonder how it happened.

as a Wolves fan, this sucks. Was on a total high yesterday, then Love is out with back spasms, and now this. Hopefully he didn't tear anything.

On a side note, why does Kobe shoot so much? When the Lakers pound it inside routinely, they can not be stopped. He should be 3rd in attempts per game behind his bigs. They would never lose if they played that way.

He's been an idiot lately. Shooting way too much. I think the problem lies in 3 people:

1) Mike Brown- who doesn't want to upset the order of things and is scaredto tell Kobe to settle down (unlike Phil)

2) Derek Fisher- he doesn't even play pg, he just gets the ball across half and gives it to Kobe

3) Kobe Bryant- Doesn't realize what's working and what's not. Just playing like a complete bonehead the past 3 games.

I'll also put blame on Pau and Bynum. They need to grow a pair and tell Kobe to pass the ball.

Bynum doesn't handle doubles well and Gasol can't really handle anybody well. Without Kobe being a threat from midrange our inside game would tank.

I'm not saying the bigs are getting as many shots as they should be, but I don't think making Kobe Bryant the #3 option is the right answer.

lakers4sho
03-10-2012, 02:26 PM
Bynum goes after his shots which is good. I lost count how many times Gasol either passed it back out after having good position, or worse, fumbling the ball for no reason.

Did you mean Kobe is delusional and still thinks he's 6 years younger than he is, and is jacking up shots on 30% FG while playing hero ball? While he has two big men that he can pass to who could get 20 and 10 each game and literally dominate every game but still doesn't choose to do so?

I am hoping he doesn't play for Spain this summer. You are 21 Ricky. You will have at least 2 more opportunities to play for Spain in the Olympics. Concentrate on your health so the team that actually provides you a living gets you back strong next season.

I want to see Rubio get on twitter and go on an Arian Foster-like "**** YOUR FANTASY TEAM I'M A HUMAN BEING" rant...

They could have been a tough out in the playoffs, and I actually think they still can be. But either way, this wasn't the year for them. It's still to come, and he'll still be a part of that. He made that team fun again (others have helped), and basically got a lot of people to appreciate some of the happy things of the game out there. He was a breath of fresh air. He's got some learning to do and he's got a lot of room to grow, but this is nothing more than a speed bump...hopefully.

here is my take. We are 7 months from the opening of training camp next season. For a 180 lb athlete who is 21 years old, that is enough time to get back to 100%. He won't get a lot of work done on his shot, and training camp will basically be him getting back in basketball shape, and you have to figure a smart coach would limit his minutes early.

The Wolves weren't contenders this year. They can still make the playoffs if Derrick Williams play recently is a sign of things to come, Pekovic keeps beasting, and Love continues to play at a top 8 player level. But this does suck all around.

Please Ricky, skip the Olympics. You have at least 2 more times to play in them.

I can't imagine him playing in the Olympics. They start in like 4 months, and that would be an insane recovery time...especially without knowing what else is wrong in there. Often, the ACL doesn't tear on its own. The terrible triad (ACL, MCL, meniscus...thank you Anatomy class!) are so close in proximity and function that they often tear together. So, we'll see. I can't imagine him competing 4 months from now...but who knows...

Also, it was a non-contact ACL tear (I know there was physical contact, but the action that brought him down was a planting of his foot). Those are worse. He kinda just plants and boom, it's torn.

I think Stern is a dick biting **** gobbler... I don't blame him for the play on Rubio I do blame him for the injuries though.... Having back to back to back games has impacts on this season regardless of how healthy you are... Guys need rest to repair there body no matter how good of shape they are in... Again, that's not all his fault though. The players agreed with it and were 100% fine with it. They're also as big of a reason there was a lockout as Stern was. Blame them for not coming into the season in shape if anything. They're pro athletes. Freak injuries, like this happen, and the lockout doesn't impact that. Sure, it's gonna cause a few more than normal of the non-freak variety, but oh well...that's not 100% Stern's fault. People are so wrong about Stern 9 times out of 10, and blame him for everything and anything. That's silly. His name is even brought up here just further illustrates that point.

It's not like we're dealing with an epidemic here...and there's no way you can say it's really more than past years.. And if it is, I blame the players who came into the season fat and out of shape, not the schedule.

But this is all moot. None of that is any reason this happened. It's a damn shame that he's hurt, but there's no reason to run around blaming people.

Yea which means this injury was just waiting to happen. It sucks that Rubio's first year in the NBA had to be a lockout year, where a lot of games are played back-to-back. He didn't get much time to get in the flow of an NBA season in terms of how to pace himself and deal with a huge increase in playing time.

In shape or not. NBA players are not used to this condensed schedule without days off or practice. of course you can blame David Stern for all of this.

Do you know how many games NBC and ESPN lost this season because of the shortened schedule??? one each. NBA is about making money.

I am hoping he doesn't play for Spain this summer. You are 21 Ricky. You will have at least 2 more opportunities to play for Spain in the Olympics. Concentrate on your health so the team that actually provides you a living gets you back strong next season.

You know hes going to play for Spain if he can. International players actually take it seriously and have pride.

I'll stop with this now but after you work out what does your body need to repair and grow... Rest (that includes bones as well as muscle tissue). This is for all athletes no matter what sport and the NBA is getting less of that then ever.

NBA analysts were even asking if having this many games in a shortened season was a really good idea.

I hope he takes off the time he needs to rest and repair this injury and not just jump into the olympics and jeopardize his career... Kid is fun to watch!

After this year Jose only has 1 more year on his contract (though it's like 10 million or something like that)... It would make sense for the wolves if they went after him to take on a one year deal... The free agent class after that looks pretty good...

Here's some SG:

Monta Ellis, Golden State Warriors – $11.0 million – Early Termination Option ($11.0 million)
Andre Iguodala, Philadelphia 76ers – $14.7 million – Early Termination Option ($15.9 million)
Tyreke Evans, Sacramento Kings – $5.3 million – Restricted ($6.9 million Qualifying Offer)
DeMar DeRozan, Toronto Raptors – $3.3 million – Restricted ($4.5 million Qualifying Offer)
Manu Ginobili, San Antonio Spurs – $14.1 million – Unrestricted
Gary Neal, San Antonio Spurs – $0.9 million – Unrestricted
Corey Brewer, Denver Nuggets – $2.7 million – Unrestricted

While I agree Irving should win ROY, Rubio is the better passer, defender (by a LOT here), rebounder, and controls the pace of the offense light years ahead of Irving. But yes, numbers wise, Irving is having a better season and is individually more important to the offense.

We are about to see how important Ricky was or was not. Does Pekovic still get fed the ball 3 feet from the rim in traffic anymore? Does Love still get easy looks off Rubio spacing and his mastery of the look away? We have 25 games to measure Rubio's effect on the floor and off. Him being gone hurts defensively more honestly. He was a ball hawking, charge taking pest, as Hollinger put it.

He'll be fine when he comes back. And it will be around 6-7 months, won't be as long as a big getting this injury.

Hooray for optimism!

Sucks to hear that. Loved seeing Rubio ball

Kobe seems to have a knack for taking out people's legs

From reviewing the video, it seems that he was trying to stop super suddenly to "get position" and "have his feet set" to draw the NBA charge, but unfortunately his left leg hyper-extended outward. It looks like it was injured before Kobe's knee bumped it, but probably that doesn't help.

I think this underlines the weirdness of players constantly trying to flop and draw charges--look at the replay and see that Rubio is trying to put his body off balance right in front of a moving Kobe, hoping that his feet will be set so that when he falls backward he can "draw the charge". What goes wrong is that his leg hyperextends and as he is falling backward he is getting injured. In the replay you can see him try to awkwardly retract his leg but it's too late, and Kobe is blowing right by him.

Yet another reason to not flop or draw charges, especially out there on the perimeter.

Sad to hear. Rubio was having 1 heck of a rookie season. Hopefully he'll be back to 110% for the start of the 2012-2013 season.

Drawing charges is NOT the same as floping not even in the same neighbourhodd, is called gOOD defense, and yes it means sacrificing your body for the wealth of the team = the OPOSITE of being "soft".

Rubios game goes far beyond his numbers. For those of you questioning it, watch the Wolves struggle from here on out. Ridnour isn't bad in comparison to Rubio but watch the overall play of the team struggle.

Some greater power hates my teams. I haven't had a .500 NBA team in 5 years and now when we're making a push to the playoffs this happens.
