View Full Version : Arm Sleeves

I know this make me sound like an idiot, but what is the deal with the arm sleeves? I realize some of them have padding on the elbow (though not all of them) and that this would help to protect the eblow when you are diving for loose balls, but most players only wear them on on arm. This is just one of those trends that has been ballooning among the players over the last few seasons and I was just wondering if anybody had any insight into this trend.

theyre actually desigfned to keep the muscles warm and keep pressure on the muscles. theyre real good for someone with an elbow injury or say a muscle bruise, but im sure some of the guys wear them just for looks!

It may become superstitious and they are probably wearing them even when the injury has healed.

Chinoeyes

isn't it supposed to keep the muscles warm and avoid also hyper extending muscles?

I'm sure its the same material from compression shorts and shirts...

I think some players use them to keep muscles warm/help with injuries, but i would think majority of players where them because they think it looks cool. I think its become a culture thing where the more sleeves, wristbands, headbands, etc you wear, the tougher and more gangster you are. Boozer wears like two on his legs and on on his arm. I have a hard time believing he needs those. I personally don't like them. I wish dwight would calm down on them too. and melo, well he looks like an idiot half the time.

might help with blood flow, thus allowing better arm movement. Iverson started this trend. I heard somewhere that AI first started wearing them because of a combination of injury and new tattoos that were sensitive. Dont know how true that is though

That's wrong. AI started wearing it because of an elbow injury, then other guys around the league just copied him because of the way it looked.

AI started a trend, now everyone does it... He started wearing the sleeve because of an injury, then just kept it even after the injury healed. He also made cornrows, the #3, tats and 1v5 offense very popular in the NBA.

AI wore the the sleeve because of an elbow injury. Not to cover up inapropriate tattoos.

Everone else started to wear it because it looks cool. But have since added different technology... I think it's Nike ProCombat who make the sleeves with the padding on the elbow. Adidas makes the sleeve with the PowerWeb Technology wich is the one that Dwight wears.

Allen Iverson did also start the headband... To the people who said Wilt Chamberlain and Slick Watts, just because they were the first to wear it doesn't mean they were the ones who set the trend. The 76ers in 2002 did it as a team. It was like a week long thing... But AI continued to wear it. Look how many people have worn headbands 2002-Present.

The braids, the tatts.

We miss you AI. :sigh:

Sweat band on the left arm is for wiping your right hand (shooting hand) so it doesn't slip off the ball. Shooting sleeves are useless fashion statements for pansies.

National Basketball Association player Allen Iverson began using a basketball sleeve during the 2000-01 season due to bursitis in his right elbow. Afterward, fans wore the sleeve as a fashion statement, and by 2008, the sleeves were the most popular non-apparel items sold by the league, according to an NBA Store spokesperson. Other players, including Ray Allen, Carmelo Anthony, Kobe Bryant, and LeBron James have worn the sleeves as well. Iverson continued wearing his basketball sleeve long after his elbow had healed, which led Steven Kotler of Psychology Today to suggest that the sleeve may act as a placebo to prevent future injuries.

A finger sleeve is worn by certain basketball players to support and protect their fingers, as well as to enhance grip on the ball during a shot.[1] It is the player's preference on which finger the sleeve is worn. Many choose to wear more than one finger sleeve, such as Reggie Miller. The use of the finger sleeve is authorized and approved by the NBA (National Basketball Association). In many cases the finger sleeve is worn for protection instead performing some sort of taping job on the digit.
