Which current NBA players do you think will go on to be great coaches? This conversation came up with friends and I thought I'd post here for your thoughts.

If they have the interest I imagine Battier and Fisher would be headliners there.

Ray Allen and Chauncey Billups could be sleepers that I think could be great. Billups has wild bball IQ and is probably the most revered player in the NBA by other players.

For the younger generation I think Chris Paul would make an amazing coach. He thinks about everything and he's articulate + passionate.

Chauncey Billups- I can see him being as successful as a Doc Rivers or even better depending on the team he has. He has an interest in coaching and I could definetly see him getting a HC job within the first 5 years of his retirement. As a player he was vocal on the floor, but not a nuisance. Many times in Detroit hed gather up his teammates and discuss what needed to be done on the next play or clearing up a miscommunication with Sheed. "Floor General" PG's like him seemingly become coaches in the NBA whether it be current ones like Scott Skiles, Avery Johnson, Doc Rivers, Mark Jackson, Scott Brooks, Larry Drew, or Lionel Hollins. Thats a pretty good bunch of coaches. I saw how much time he spent coaching and mentoring draft prospects in Vegas, only to spend even more time mentoring them during the lockout as they held that Lockout league there.

Other players:

Nick Collison
Earl Watson
Chris Paul
Mike Dunleavy Jr
Luke Walton (worked as assistant coach at Memphis during lockout)
Elton Brand
Anthony Parker
Brian Cardinal (worked as assistant at Purdue during lockout)

I dont think Fisher will be able to get any coaching job in the NBA.

As an unpopular Union President and having proceeded over a messy lockout, it will be extremely tough not only to break in as an assistant coach but to be given a Head Coaching job.

Patrick Ewing's role in the 98-99' lockout hurt him despite being a NBA legend.

Grant Hill.

Dwight Howard also.

Chauncey came to mind as well. Possibly, Steve Nash, although I could see him living a pretty quiet life once he retires. Grant Hill would probably be a pretty good coach as well.

I could see Tim Duncan become a coach too. If Popp is still coaching after Duncan retires, we may see Timmy come back as an assistant and then eventually work himself up to a head coaching gig.

Maybe in the college ranks.

But Shane may be more successful outside of basketball once his career ends. He could probably run for mayor of Memphis.

Chauncey Billups and prob fisher

Ray Allen was the first player that came to mind.

After putting more thought into it, I think Derek Fisher is probably pretty high on my list too.

Steve Nash, Jason Kidd and Grant Hill as well.

My Jayhawk bias makes me want to say Kirk Hinrich and Nick Collison too.

Aside from Billups, I think Manu Ginobili will at least coach the Argentinian national team some day.

Grant Hill and Shane Battier. I though Fisher, but I don't think he'd go into coaching.

Steve Nash should join the TNT broadcast crew in some way after he's done. He'd be awesome.
