97-98: 58-24 (lost EC Finals to Bulls)
98-99 (Lockout Season): 33-17 (Lost EC Finals to Knicks)
99-2000: 56-26 (Lost NBA Finals to Lakers)

Total W-L: 147-67

As a head coach in just his short three years, he managed the team to get into the EC finals twice and to the NBA finals once. Why did he decide to call it quits after having a pretty damn good resume as a coach in just three years? Was there something that happened in the organization that I missed?

Its called a promotion, JK he could have done both, I dont know why he didnt. Maybe he felt they underachieved with him

I was wondering the same thing after watching game 7 of the 98 ecf against the bulls. I think he was offered the general manager position, and hasn't looked back since.

He didn't want to travel and was tired of coaching. Plus, he had Rick Carlisle on the bench. Carlisle would still be the coach if wasn't for the Brawl in the Palace.

Bird was vocal in his distaste for coaching. He didn't like the travel, and the time you have to spend being a head coach. He was offered a front office position, and took it.

He was sicking of losing to Phil in the Eastern playoffs and then in the NBA Finals when Phil made the move out West.

He didnt like the attitude of young players from what I remember hearing. Jalen Rose's name came up more than once.
