View Full Version : Best 1v1 defender in the league?

Iman Shumpert's defense has been scary good, but I know he can't possibly be the best 1v1 in the league at this point in his career. Who are the top 5 1v1 perimeter defenders right now?

Show me another 6'9" player in the league that can guard CP3 like that. The guy can guard the 1-4 and possibly even the 5 depending on the size of the player, no one has made me want to watch a player play defense in the NBA before him, now anytime he is on the floor all I wait for is to see him play D.

Iggy is the best right now I think. Shumpert isn't in that elite tier, but he has been extremely impressive for a rookie. If he works on his help D he can be an all defensive team candidate.

blystr2002

I am not a big Lebron fan, but he is playing really good defense this year on whoever they tell him to cover. As for Kobe, if you say current players career wise he is definitely top 5. However, he has slowed down a bit to where he can still give you that in crunch time and spurts, but for a full 48 probably not quite top 5.

Shortys4711

Not the best out there, But Grant Hill is up there for sure. So far the only guy that really burns him is Kobe and well I dont know if anyone can actually slow Kobe when he turns it on. Hill always seems to get no love in these threads but his D is awesome

Shumpert is straight nasty on defense. His lateral quickness isn't as good as someone like Iggy, but he definitely has the best defensive hands in the league. Nobody can score on the dude in the post because he swipes it every time.

Rose has impressed me a lot defensively this season. I think toning it down on the offensive end has allowed him to become a much better defender. Good job, Derrick.

Iggy is the best . Deng , Tony Allen , R.Brewer , Afflalo , Lowry , Lebron , Marion , Rose ...
D-Rose has been beast on defensive end , not getting much steals but he does average 1 bpg and contest every single shot , he's been one of better PG's in terms of defending .

LeBron is far and away the best. He made DRose look like a schoolgirl in the playoffs.

Shump will get his due in these threads soon enough. In 1 on 1 defensive isolation situations he gets a steal 25% of the time (real stat) and that stat is increasing everyday he plays. Thats not taking gambles on passing lanes, that straight up taking your cookies right out from under ya - against NBA point guards nonetheless, not SG's or Forwards

A little off-topic but I just looked at synergy and Ben Wallace is the 2nd best post-up defender in the NBA. He only allows 0.47 PPP on 25.6% shooting. And overall he only gives up 0.7 PPP on 37.3% shooting.

Hes 37 years old, has gray hair, and is only 6'8 :laugh2:

Oh. I was being sarcastic. It seems like half of every post here involves that posters' favorite player, whether they think he deserves it or not, just to mention his name and spread the love.

None of my favorite Magic players are elite defenders. Of my other favorite players, LeBron and Manu (to an extent) are. I haven't watched enough of Grant Hill this year to determine whether he's still an elite on-ball defender. He was last year, but I don't know if age has caught up with him.

boogie-reke
03-01-2012, 01:00 PM
Shumpert fouls too much, he can't really handles screens that well and isn't as good team and overall defender and Knicks fans make him out to be.

As an isolation defender 1v1 defender without any screens just flat out 1v1 - yes, I can see him being as one of the elite in the league even right now.. he's just an amazing defender when it's just him and his man.

Once he figures out how not to foul so often when he needs to move past screens and guard oeple who run off the ball etc, and understand how to play better team defence - he can be an elite overall defender in this league, right now he's not there.

Probably the people they normally guard...AKA their position.

Obviously Tony Allen can't guard Dwight Howard, but that matters absolutely zero percent.

As for Courtney Lee...he's definitely a really solid defender. I don't think he's absolutely shut down, granted, I haven't seen as much of him lately as I used to. He's kind of found obscurity these days. I really thought he'd be a much better player than he has been, not that he's bad or anything.

Thats pretty good, if you look at his victim list its not just a bunch of bums either. Granted its in a limited sample set but he has +3 possessions each against LMA, Dwight, Hibbert, Scola, Cousins, Duncan and Gasol and hes holding his own. Only Gasol and LMA were able to crack 1PPP.

Good to see him holding his own against his own man, though he does sort of gets abused in isolation though

Durant has better defensive stats than Lebron according to Synergy, Lebron is not a good man to man defender, not sure why it is hard for people to understand. He isn't some chase down blocker either. He is just a help defender, similar to what Bird was in the 80s except much more athletic.

LOL probably has something to do with the fact that your lying.

So you go from saying Durant has better stats to Bron sucks man to man? Why not break down his defensive possessions?

His help defense is whats killing his synergy #'s this year (They were elite last year) but this year hes not closing out on spot-up shooters as well and if the Heat have a weakness defensively its defending the 3pt line.

But his Isolation aka 1 on 1 numbers are superior to Durant this year for sure.
