View Full Version : Report: Brandon Roy planning to make comeback

Fresno
02-28-2012, 04:30 PM
Former Portland Trail Blazers guard, Brandon Roy, has thought about returning to the game after retiring prior to the 2011-12 season due to numerous knee injuries, according to ProBasketballTalk.

“It’s the truth. It’s really hard being so far away from the game. I spend time watching Jamal (Crawford) and following all of his games; Will (Conroy) and Tre (Simmons) are both doing their thing, so it’s driving me to wanna come back out there.” Roy told US Basket, “If the treatment I’ve been looking into can work, I believe there’s a good chance you will see Brandon Roy back hoopin’.”

http://tracking.si.com/2012/02/28/report-brandon-roy-considering-a-comeback/

According to sources close to the player, regardless of his knee problems, Roy’s decision to retire wasn’t all health related. “There’s something to it, but it’s not the right time for me to get into it right now,” Roy said. “I’ve been doing some treatment and I’m trying to leave the window open to returning to basketball.”

Portland wanted him to retire instead of having to deal with the negative media that would've came with them not giving him a role on the team and using the amnesty clause on him.

He has arthritic knees without both meniscuses.

Possibly hes going to get the "Kobe treatment" and/or get a meniscus transplant.

If he came back, he'd still probably be better than any of the Laker guards we currently have. :laugh2:

I knew he couldn't stay outta basketball this early in his career. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he gave it another shot

The way he went out, there is no way he doesn't give it another shot.

If he comes back and plays 10 games his salary goes back on Portland's books, right? Darius Miles style.

I would love to have him on Dallas. Talent is talent and Roy has a lot of it. Yes his knees are bad but he can still be a 10-13 ppg in the league. Plus he is one of the great guys of the NBA. Such a class act.

I hope he comes back. no one should have to retire that early in their career because of injury. I wonder what this "treatment" is he is refering to

Portland used the amnesty clause on him.

His salary wont count towards their cap.

My prediction is an '86 Bill Walton type season from him for a contender, he's too good not to be able to help a good team in small spurts, but to think he'll come back fully healthy and play multiple seasons at a high level is a bit too optimistic.

I hope he returns and plays to his full potential. His injury is a tragedy much along the lines of Grant Hill and Penny Hardaway. so much talent and potential in this kid.

He was amnnestied.

In order to make room on the active roster for Jamal Crawford, the Portland Trail Blazers decided to waive guard Brandon Roy. The decision was a tough one for the organization, but this is also something that will help both Roy and the organization in the long-term. Roy receives his full contract under the new NBA amnesty clause and the Blazers get to take his salary off of the books. This way, Roy doesn't have to officially retire, and stands to make the full amount of his contract.

Hes not going back to Portland.

They forced him to retire & amnestied him because they didnt want him. Plain & Simple.

They're already paying him a bunch of money not to play, why would they re-sign him?

LongIslandIcedZ

If he proves to be healthy and can play I feel like Chicago would be a hell of a destination for him. They need another scoring option and this guy could fill that role for cheap.

Not just that - once you amnesty some one aren't you prevented from getting them back for the life of their amnestied contract?
I don't think B Roy can go back to Portland before 2014/15 even if both sides wanted it.

He'd probably end up with the Blazers if all goes well for him, but I'm drooling over the possibility of him playing SG on the Knicks with Lin, Melo, STAT and Chandler. Dear lord that would be beastly. But I wish the man the best. He was always one of my favorite players in the NBA and his game always reminded me of Kobe's. Hope he's back soon.

Um, I loved Roy as much as anyone, but I seriously doubt he can be more than a rotation player off the bench on most playoff teams at this point

I believe so.

Same thing goes for buyouts as well to stop that 30 day rule.

I don't think so. I'm pretty sure they ran the usual bidding process already, like with every other amnestied player, and nobody bid because they thought he was done - so now he's cleared waivers and is a FA.

i think he could come back, play a limited role for a contender, and win a title. something like 20 minutes a game.

especially after treatment, i think this is possible.

Im pretty sure he realizes that too, but just wants to get out on the floor again back on a NBA team.

He probably can only give you about 20 minutes at the most off the bench, just depends on the situation and how the team uses him. I'd most definetly want him on the floor in the final 10 minutes each game.

The best fit for him would be the Clippers IMO.

Although I am not a fan of the blazers, I've always been a huge fan of Brandon Roy. He plays the game with a flow that reminds me of Clyde, and his humble personality makes him a great teammate. It's sad to see such a talent break down, while the rest of the league hands max contracts to some players that clearly don't deserve it. Best of luck! Here's to Roy returning back to his old form!
