Who is the Best Player Ever to win only 1 League MVP?

Who would you say?

Also in what order would you put them?

Shaq
Hakeem
Kobe
Dirk
Garnett
Barkley
Erving
Oscar
DRob

Figured those would be the only ones who deserve a mention?

the dream. probably my pick for the most generally underrated/overlooked player. shaq would be a somewhat distant second. kobe/oscar/kg/drob in some order followed closely by dirk/charles, and erving filling out this list. to me though hakeem is the best player on this list by a fair margin.

Just shows NBA MVP has become a popularity contest as the award is already decided by the media before the season starts.

Doesn't matter that the Dream, Shaq and Kobe only have 1 league mvp each. Dream has 2 titles and 2 finals mvps, Shaq has 4 titles and 3 finals mvps, and KObe has 5 titles and 2 finals mvps. That's a combined 11 titles and 7 finals mvps. Rather have the finals mvps and league mvps.

Btw, surprised nobody has made a thread about multiple time league MVPs with no championships or finals mvps. ;)

As far as MVP's go, comparing greater players with one another based off the amount they have can't really determine much of anything.
Kobe's MVP season wasn't even his best year.

Anyway, him and Oscar are the best of the bunch listed. They're arguably 2 of the top 10 best players ever. Shaq is the only one close of the names above.

I would have expected a more intelligent post from you considering that LeBron is one of the most scrutinized players by the media yet he still wins MVPs.. and I wonder why..

You know what will be astonishing?? When he wins it this year with Wade and Bosh on the team.. That just makes it that much more impressive.

Hakeem Olajuwon easily wins this IMO. He is the second best basketball player of all time after Michael Jordan. I remember watching him play in his prime as he beat my Knicks and my favorite basketball player of all time Patrick Ewing in the 1994 NBA finals. He also destroyed David Robinson and Charles Barkley in the playoffs. I would even go so far as to say he is a close second to MJ as an all around dominant basketball player.

Wow, this is the first time I've heard such an argument. I won't deny it.

Also, he destroyed Orlando Shaq and swept his behind in the 95 Finals. So you can argue that those 2 yrs in Houston (94 and 95) were as dominant as Shaq's 3 championship years in LA (00-02).

Lol. Kobe only deserved in it 05-06 when Nash got his 2nd. He stole it from Chris Paul in 07-08.

It came down to the 4th to last game of the regular season, Hornets @ Lakers, and Kobe dominated CP3 and the Lakers beat the Hornets, which eventually catapulted the Lakers to the 1st seed in the West. The media even made a big deal out of that game and biasedly predicated that whoever performed better and catapulted their team to a victory would be the one whose MVP stock would rise.

If I had to pick a center [for an all-time best team], I would take Olajuwon. That leaves out Shaq, Patrick Ewing. It leaves out Wilt Chamberlain. It leaves out a lot of people. And the reason I would take Olajuwon is very simple: he is so versatile because of what he can give you from that position. It's not just his scoring, not just his rebounding or not just his blocked shots. People don't realize he was in the top seven in steals. He always made great decisions on the court. For all facets of the game, I have to give it to him.

Only reason Shaq was so dominant during his Laker days was because all the great centers before him were retired or washed up

I've always said it is a joke that Shaq and Babe Ruth only have one MVP each. Shaq was more dominate during his prime than any player on this list. Hakeem since retiring has become the most overrated player I can remember. Somehow the arguement of he is so underrated made people forget what they actually saw and turned him into one of those guys who is thought of as somehow better then he was especially those people who may have not watched him (too young). Dr. J had the issue of playing in the ABA for quite a few of his great years so thats not fair.

But thats not the question and in fact is the justification of who you think should have more MVPs. I would say that during Shaq's real dominant years overall talent in the NBA was down. Shaq had no comp and shouldn't have been losing to the likes of iverson and other players who were exciting but nowhere near the level of dominance from Shaq. Hakeem had Jordan, Ewing, Robinson, Malone, and others to compete with. Kobe got to play with Shaq and got more rings than he deserves and thus a tad overrated but thats another arguement - still very good though.

In Shaq's own words...

"If I'm going to fight you, I'd rather just beat you," he said. "If I can't beat you, I'll be a man and say I can't beat you. I'm not going to [cry about it]. . . . I'm the first guy to say that somebody is better than me. I was the first guy to say Hakeem Olajuwon beat me in the [1995] NBA finals. He killed me. He dominated me. I didn't go, 'Oh, he's traveling. They had experience. Wah-wah-wah.' I'm a man. Hakeem Olajuwon dusted my butt.

Shaq ranks his top 5 centers of all time.
http://blogs.dallasobserver.com/sportatorium/2011/06/shaquille_oneal_retires_my_top.php

5. Bill Russell -- 11 rings, but shot only 44% as a center and never averaged more than 18 points.

4. Shaquille O'Neal -- 4 rings, 5th all-time scoring and the most powerful force in NBA history.

3. Wilt Chamberlain -- Averaged 50 points and 25 rebounds in '62 and regularly dominated Russell.

2. Hakeem Olajuwon -- The most skilled offensive center in the history of basketball.

1. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar -- NBA all-time leader in points scored and minutes played and owner of the game's most lethal shot, the Sky Hook.

I'm not saying that Shaq is better then Hakeem. I like Shaq better, i'm biased though I think because I'm a Knicks fan and believe we should have won that championship against HOU. To answer your question I guess Shaq did destroy a front court of Duncan and Robinson... That was pretty impressive.

Considering this list, I'd take Shaq. He's only been awarded one MVP, but he dominated the voting for years. He has a higher MVP award share than some who have won it twice. One time winners who are still top ten in total MVP award shares are guys who were top 1-5 for ten years plus.

I'm not here to say that I think Shaq is better than Dream, but look at their award shares. Shaq doubles him.

Shaq had his hand in MVP voting a lot more times, and/or at a much higher share average than Dream did, despite them both winning one.

The award share argument says its Shaq-Bryant-Dream-O, in that order.

although, it's not the definitive argument, just something to consider.

Gotta be Hakeem hands down...

For the young guys you didnt get to see the Dream in his prime think Dwight Howard with a great post game..

Not even close. Dwight is much more athletic and significantly stronger and bigger. Hakeem was just too skilled and too fundamentally sound. But at the same time, Hakeem wasnt able to dominate as much, as far as winning goes, as compared to a few of the other bigs, Shaq being one of them.

Btw, surprised nobody has made a thread about multiple time league MVPs with no championships or finals mvps. ;)

If MVP was a popularity contest, Duncan would not have more than Shaq or Kobe.

Not even close and please don't point to the horrid example of the Finals meeting between them... Shaq was a youngin', the Dream was in his prime and Shaq still played at a REALLY high level.

Shaq prime (2000) > Hakeem ever

the problem i have with shaq ,especially when comparing him to hakeem is that hakeem was a defensive monster.while shaq, put up great offensive numbers but would become lackadaisical too much when it came to that side of the game

Well for Shaq, Olajuwon, Barkley, D. Robinson, and Barkley...when your prime is also during the same time that the GOAT is playing, you're likely going to be behind him. It is arguable that's how Robinson and Olajuwon got their MVPs thanks to Jordan's sabbatical with the baseball experiment.

Can anyone deny that the quality of the league was pretty bad from 1999-2005. That was during Shaqs prime. He had less competition therefore more dominant performances. People who say Hakeem wasn't better please go watch him play because obviously you are too young to remember.

Shaq, easily. Prove otherwise.

hakeem was a more complete two-way player? who dominated head-to-head match ups. he was the best player at his position when it was as stacked as it ever was in league history. shaq dominated a league that was less talented at center, and less talented in general than dreams league. and he's the only contemporary player shaq has admitted was better than him.

really don't see how it's easily anyone on this list, really.

Seriously, how do Shaq, Kobe, and Hakeem only combine for THREE MVP's?

not been a homer but Kobe and Shaq should have won more than one for sure. Kobe especially has been great for just about every year he has played yet someone had to always beat him to it. Seems like the MVP deal is more of a media circus than real play by great players. More like American idol if you wish

Buttt Kobe has 5 rings ;)

Which means he has been more valuable than any other player on this list to their teams because besides Shaq, nobody has even come close to winning as much as him. But the thing is, MVP are subjectively decided on by media members. Championships are earned so their is no debate.

As great as Hakeem, Shaq and Kobe all were, I really don't think any of them really deserved many more than the one MVP they got.

You can make arguments that Shaq deserved in in 1999, 2001 (absolutely deserved it over AI), 2002 (if he didn't miss games, he would have had a better year than Timmy) and probably a few other years.

Kobe probably only deserved one, maybe two, but probably just one. I think you can argue that he first really came into consideration during the 2005-2006 season, after a few iffy years and after getting out of Shaq's shadow. His team stunk that year, so he didn't deserve it then. In 2007 Dirk was absolutely the correct choice, no debate about it. In 2008, he won it. In 2009 LeBron was more deserving, and I think as we move on and remove emotion, that's pretty obvious. Same goes for the 2010 award. LeBron just waxed him statistically those two years, and had the #1 overall record both seasons...all with an average supporting cast. Last year he didn't deserve it either.

Hakeem went against better competition than both, and while he is arguably a top 5 all-time player, 1 is probably the right number for him, because MJ, Robinson, Barkley, etc. all were incredibly deserving of theirs.

But, to answer the question, I rank these guys, right now all-time:

7. Shaq
9. Hakeem
11. Kobe

Kobe might end up passing both, that's TBD. I think it's likely. Shaq was better in his prime, but Kobe will wax him with the longevity stuff.

Who was Hakeem going to win MVP over? He never had the best stats in the league nor the best record or even a #1 seed.

total myth. Go look at the defensive stats from this era. it goes down as one of the best, if not the best defensive eras in NBA history. the numbers don't lie. everyone assumes that just because MJ retired that the league dropped off. it didn't. The Spurs and Detroit teams from that era are some of the best defensive teams in league history.

I have Kobe #1 on this list. I don't know what else this guy has to do to crack people's top 10. To be so disgustingly decorated in terms of all-nba, all-star, scoring records, all-defensive teams, and rings you have to give him his credit.

this kind of reminds me of the #8? player ranking we did over the summer. Bryant wins by a large margin, mainly because the Duncan and Hakeem people split. same situation here, but it's Dream and Shaq. Kobe wins, but i bet the vast majority of dream voters would take shaq over bryant, and that the majority of shaq voters would take dream over bryant.

He was the hardest player for teams to guard during his hay day.

Truthfully Kobe shouldnt be on the list. The MVP he won in 07-08, he didn't deserve it. He just won it because the media felt he was snubbed in the past, and they knew he had to win one before LeBron starts dominating.

Shaq also should have won more than one. He should have won in 00-01 over Iverson

Having these polls including Kobe are dumb. It's always going to be a landslide for Kobe even if the poll were "Which player would be better if they were a Cockroach?" because the Kobe fans would come up with something like "Kobe would be no question!! Lebron doesnt have a ring!! You guys are all just haters!!!"

SO Hakeem Olajuwan is not a top 10 player...? Are you ********?
