When did the whole high fiving the free throw shooter after he shoots start? For some reason this has always bothered me, and just seems silly. They're just free throws, yet everyone on the team has to go congratulate/cheer up the shooter after he shoots?

Obviously it's not a big issue or anything, but does anyone else find it stupid?

Actually yes. It kinda is stupid. All the other 4 players give him 5 after every free throw except the last one of the set.

yea.... I don't get it.

While hilarious, it also illustrates the stupidity of it all.

People who are hating on this obviously never played ball I guess.

It's about supporting your team mate. I coach and I force my kids to do this. If a guy misses and his team mates are right their don't worry you got the next one bud it boosts his confidence.

And what do you mean just a free throw? Free throws decide games all the time.

If it's a miss, it's like "keep your head up, make this one count"
If it's a make, it's like "nice man. Same motion, same routine, same result. Let's go"

I don't think it's THAT big of a deal. I think it's become a habit more than anything, if you DON'T do it, you're the weird one sort of thing

Played basketball all my life, I find the whole free throw high five thing ridiculous. NBA players shouldn't need confidence boosts with free throws, they're supposed to make them. I guess if a guy misses a free throw, or they come at a crucial point in the game it wouldn't bother me. But a player needs all 4 of his teammates to come and "boost his confidence"? Just shoot your free throws and stop wasting time.

I don't think it's a big deal either, more just a pet peeve. It'd be like someone giving me a high five for doing something routine, like flush the toilet.

Free throws are the 2nd highest percentage shot in the game of basketball. So, Ebbs is right. The more you get high percentage shots, and the more you make high percentage shots, the more you score per possession, and the more you win basketball games.

Whatever you can do to help your teammate make more of them - and that includes encouragement - should be applauded and encouraged.

Funny is, darn seem automatic to players. Its like as routinary as dribbling the ball. Smh

It is what comes with being part of a team. With doing it, the opposition sees your unity as a team. Imagine if no one congratulated each other throughout the game? It was be stupid and no one would play a team game. Watching it may seem stupid, but doing it in an actual game helps boost confidence.

I think its a sign of respect and confidence in team work, it's a lot different when your actually on the court compared to watching it at home I'm guessing.

To be technical, I think a high five at the free throw line is extremely lame. The regular low fives don't bother me though. Jumping high fives? Oooh, who knows.
