View Full Version : Jason Whitlock of Fox Sports insults Jeremy Lin

Fox Sports’ Jason Whitlock apologized for an insensitive-at-best, and racist-at-worst, tweet about Knicks guard Jeremy Lin, which Whitlock posted after Lin’s 38-point performance against the Lakers on Friday.

In a thinly-veiled reference to a stereotype about Asian men, Whitlock tweeted, “Some lucky lady in NYC is gonna feel a couple of inches of pain tonight.”
Jason Whitlock apologized regarding an offensive tweet he made about Knicks guard Jeremy Lin. (AP Photo)

On Saturday, the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) demanded an apology from Whitlock.

The tweet “doesn’t hold up to the conduct of responsible journalists, those in sports or otherwise, who adhere to standards of fairness, civility and good taste. Nor does it meet the standards of Fox Sports, with which you are associated,” the AAJA wrote on its Facebook page. “Outrage doesn’t begin to describe the reaction of the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) to your unnecessary and demeaning tweet.”

Later Saturday, Whitlock, who is black, wrote on FoxSports.com, “I've cried watching Tiger Woods win a major golf championship. Jeremy Lin, for now, is the Tiger Woods of the NBA. I suspect Lin makes Asian Americans feel the way I feel when I watch Tiger play golf.

“I should've realized that Friday night when I watched Lin torch the Lakers. For Asian Americans and a lot of sports fans, his nationally televised 38-point outburst was the equivalent of Tiger's first victory in The Masters. I got caught up in the excitement. I tweeted about what a great story Lin is and how he could rival Tim Tebow.

“I then gave in to another part of my personality — my immature, sophomoric, comedic nature.”

if he's got a small penis why would the lady be in pain? sounds like he is speaking from experience.

Medical and biological research is clear on one point: obese men have smaller penises: they are much less physically active which impedes blood flow, plus the large rolls and layers of fat actually hide their genitalia, sometimes to the point that their genitalia is inverted and literally buried within their fat and skin.

Since J Lin is a professional athlete, and Jason Whitlock is a sedentary, fat male, it stands to reason...

yep,if the comments were said in reverse (about a black player) Rev Al and Rev Jessie (who love their free air time) and the black race would want their jobs taken from them.

IF Lin was a black player and some white analyst made a joke about celebration by eating fried chickens and watermelons and then bangin some black hos, the black community would go crazy. But since it's on the Asian community, they find it funny and want people to have a sense of humor.

No it is not all right. And yes, Blacks do face discrimination in sports as well. For example, as quarterbacks, in coaching, and in management, in golf, in tennis.

Jason Whitlock made a mistake, but he's apologized and moved on.

I'm Asian and I enjoy a good joke even about Asians that joke would be pretty good with your friends or the League. On the other hand prob. not the smartest move when it's pretty blatant and your a public figure.

If we're talking about politics, I think overall African America's have it worse and more people def. treat them differently because of it. I think Asians have more blatant racism put towards them and people just expect it to be funny; def. get more heckling for sure.

Feel kinda bad for Lin though he got a lot of crap at Harvard in the beginning opposing teams calling him Chinamen and telling him to open his eyes, messed up that no body talks about that. He's a class act though just rubs it off, ignorance is def. a problem in America still.

I think ultimately it's worse cuz. it's directed straight at him, versus if it was a general stereotype.

I think it's pretty obvious that he was referring to the stereotypes about Asian men. But really he didn't say anything "specifically" about those couple of inches being because he was Asian. Meaning he could just make the claim that he simply made fun of his penis size, and it has nothing to do with him being Asian. Aren't those people that are offended being racist by assuming that he was definitely referring to the Asian men stereotype?

Stereotypes have truth in them for certain people. White people have small penis's too, so do black people. It is just not needed to generalize because it does not make sense for all people, ever.

There is no reason to suppose anything, If people actually did want to live in a better place instead of believe that racist jokes contribute anything to society. I do not say racist jokes and they really do not even come to my head.

The world doesn't spin based upon how you watch it rotate.

The whole idea of the world being some "better" place because people are unable to poke fun at others is ridiculous. Because where do you draw the line? Everything can be twisted as being offensive to someone or some group if you're attempting to make a joke about them.

I drop "racist jokes" with my friends, and they come back with ones too.

I dont want to live in a world where we can't sit back and laugh at each other for fear of hurting someone's feelings. Then what becomes comedy?

Do we need to go back to throwing pies in other peoples faces?

or "Of course he can jump that high #DerrickRISE"

Is this supposed to be racist?

I've gone through this entire thread and not 1 person has acknowledged that generally all Black NBA players face stereotypes regarding their personal lives. We know so very little about these guys, but apparently there is some general accepted perception about all guys like them.

I dont know how many times I've seen people make comments that are generally accepted about NBA players being "stupid", "selfish", "promiscuous", & generally concerned about material items. Suddenly when a NBA player doesn't fit this mold for whatever reason, people tend take the time to point out how unique they are in that aspect.

I dont know how many times I've heard the same stories on Grant Hill, Shane Battier, or even Derrick Rose for that matter of how great people they are. What makes them different than anyone else playing in the NBA?

Having watched Baseball & Soccer for such a long time, the perceptions are completely in reverse in which these athletes are held to positive images and the "bad apples" are pointed out & criticized.

Dont tell me that the American stereotyped negative perception of African American's in general doesn't lead to what NBA or even NFL players face.

Really, because I've heard plenty of jokes about KG's darkness around here.

And people are being racist to acknowledge KG is "black"?

Interesting.

I'm pretty sure those jokes about KG's skin tone were funny at a barber shop back in 1996, I just feel like I've seen/heard all the KG jokes before.

Even the "Gay G" jokes.

Honestly? People need to stop forcing people to say sorry. That does not change the crap in people's mind and the racism. It's one thing if you are making a racist joke in provide but the simple fact that you know this kid is getting praise because he is braking barriers of not only being successful player out of Harvard but being Taiwanese. Making tasteless comments like that is unacceptable.

Can't wait to see what happens if we have a popular Iranian player.

It comes with the territory.

To say that people are surprised or shocked by Jeremy Lin's performance is an understatement.

You think people are "racist" for finding it somewhat funny or even odd seeing an Asian guy playing in the NBA at PG of all positions? I can guarantee you that even the Asian demographic worldwide now who is tuning in to watch Jeremy Lin play finds what is going on just as odd as any other group.

You cant "break barriers" unless you're great at what you do. Right now, at this very moment, he is the "new story" to cover for the media.

All I see that Whitlock made was a joke, albeit a funny one, that shouldn't have been broadcast publicly considering he holds a job with a major media network.

Half the people I've heard say it were black. I don't care what I'm laughing at, just as long as it is was a joke, and not a serious thing. I'm asian myself and I thought what Whitlock said was kinda funny. Obviously, he should have known that he was gonna get a lot of hate for it too (people are too sensitive these days and he is a reporter). I never said that what I said earlier were examples of people being racist, those were things I've heard people joke about before that involved race. Everyone gets stereotyped, you just gotta deal with it and move on. True discrimination or prejudice is wrong, of course, but ethnic jokes shouldn't be taken too seriously.

Because people have become so uptight to ensure they portray this public facade of complete political correctness; which is a joke.

I know people of many varying cultures and ethnicities, yet judging from the criteria in this thread we'd all be deemed racists by things we've said to each other in the past. It's simple, if a comment/remark/joke is made without any real harmful intent, then how hard is it to shrug/laugh it off?

Seriously, people have taken the "race" issue too damn far. Life is too short and we're all ****ing human; have the ability to laugh at yourself and take a joke people.

I blame it on prudish North American society.

I'd laugh if Lin has a giant wang. That'd be a cool stereotype to squash. Imagine he takes a girl home and she's accepted it and come to grips with the fact that he's gonna have a small penis and when they get ready to do the deed, he absolutely drops The Hammer on her to her complete and utter shock. That's gotta be an awesome feeling.

It was slightly funny. Comments like that however are best kept for when you're around your boys not social (or any other type of) media. That being said, I never liked Jason Whitlock anyway. He has a history of playing the race card too much and higlighting sterotypes to sensationalize his columns. He's particularly fond of bashing black players with urban or inner city backgrounds. To hear of HIM of all people making a joke like that is TRULY hypocritical.

*sigh* First of all, we shouldn't look down or ridicule dudes who don't have huge penises. The vast majority of guys in all races are in the "normal" range, and for most chicks giant size is not what they are really concerned about--unless they are the type of chicks that you don't want in your life. Uh, trust me on this one because I've had some serious freak-chicks on me. So perpetrating bad feelings or insecurities among guys is just whack. And btw, a lot of asian dudes are quite well endowed. My Japanese friend from HS was actually bigger than me, dude was packing.

So, stereotypes, as usual, are for stupid clowns and losers.

Secondly, I don't think we should really look down on "people who like transsexuals" either, or gays, bis, or actual transsexuals either for that matter. This should be obvious but I do understand if you spend your time indoors mostly and don't get to many clubs, parties, restaurants or vacation spots and don't date much, don't get too many "chicks" in other words, then you might not know this yet.

No I don't, because that is definitely racist for more than one reason, this is merely a dick joke.

Yea a fuuny yet racist dick joke, but even saying that its a harmless one. It hasnt been proven majority of Asians have less than average wanks so no harm no foul.

You cant joke about holocaust to jews and...

Jokes of a black persons color, hair, intelligence, and slavery should be off limits becuase those are things that were used against them for hundreds of years and we have only had a positive look on life since the mid 90's.

Lol this is so ********. You're basically implying its ok to joke about Asian guys dicks. Btw, I'm not asian, but what you said is beyond ignorant and just because a few Asian people think its funny doesn't speak for the rest of them.

I don't remember him saying they couldn't drive. Again, he never actually said anything about his race.

Stop with this absurd *****. You want to treat someone like they're brain-dead idiots, talk to your friends and family.
"...never said anything about his race."

Learn something about insinuation, clown.

'This just in angry mob right outside Fox Sports headquarters, the cause is still unknown'

Now back to todays story MJ is back with the bulls, Derrik Rose predicts the Bulls will win just by having 'Lord James' on the court.

We asked Rose why Lord james

"Well if that Lebron guy calls himself King James than the GOATJ should be called Lord James".

If a white columnist said Jason Whitlock must be overweight from all the fried chicken he eats, you damn well know the media would blow it up, and most of you saying whitlocks joke isn't racist, would be saying the opposite. Just because Whitlock didnt specifically mention Asians doesn't mean it's not racist. Any person who isn't a total dumbass knows what he meant by his comment.

That's odd. I cried for Tiger Woods too... but it was because Tiger is Asian. :D
