Sad news

The brother of New York Knicks star Amare Stoudemire died in a car accident early Monday morning in Florida, a team spokesman confirmed to ESPNNewYork.com.

The Florida Highway Patrol said that Hazell Stoudemire was driving a Cadillac Escalade north on U.S. 27 in Lake Wales, Fla., at a high rate of speed and collided with the rear of a tractor trailer at around 1:45 a.m. ET, according to multiple media reports. The police said that the 35-year-old was not wearing a seatbelt and was declared dead at the scene.

The team said that Stoudemire is traveling to Florida to be with his family and will not be with the team for Monday night's game against the Jazz in New York.

Amare Stoudemire is a former Mr. Basketball in Florida and went straight to the NBA out of high school. He grew up in the Lake Wells area, which is in central Florida.

damn sad story but your asking for death if you don't put on a seatbelt, accidents happen and you can't avoid them

Truly tragic. Sorry to hear that. The loss of a sibling is a pain no one should have to bare.

Amare, PSD's thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this time.

Tragic, but what do you expect when you aren't wearing a seat belt??? Accidents will always happen even if it isn't you're fault.

Rest In Peace

Not surprising. He was most likely drunk.

We don't know that. You really shouldn't assume.

Most of the stuff you post isn't really PSD worthy.

On topic, I saw this on another site too. My condolences to the Stoudemire family.

Your tempting fate by not wearing your seat belt and eventually your gonna lose. It's got to be tough losing a sibling, I feel terrible for him.

Do you really think a seat belt would help when he ran into the back of a semi at a "high rate" of speed?

He was probably drunk.

I feel sorry for the family and it is a shame they have to suffer because this guy was a moron. Dead or not he is an idiot and I feel no sympathy for him... Driving at really high speeds late at night with no seat belt is just flat out dumb.

I feel for Amare and the family. RIP Hazell.

Unfortunately it's hard to give complete sympathy for something that most likely could have been avoided and was probably created by Hazell himself.

I would be sad but pissed that my brother was dumb enough to put himself in that situation... Not only are you screwing yourself but you are endangering the lives of others because you are driving extremely fast... What if he hit a car with other people in it? What if there was a mom or dad in that car... I feel no sympathy for people that put themselves and others in this situation. My sympathies are with his family and his family alone.

Smh. All I have to say. I don't disagree that it's not the smartest thing to do driving at really high speeds at night but come on.....there are many people that die from ways that could have been prevented.

These comments would be less harsh if his brother were white. But since he was a black man he was "probably drunk or high" and was a "moron".

Terrible for the family. I'm not really a fan of Amare's, but I do respect the fact that he's made something of himself and has escaped the rough background he came from.

I cannot imagine how tough it would be if I lost my brother.

Nobody deserves to die. I'm a strict believer in this. Life is the greatest thing that we have in this world.

RIP to the Stoudemire brother and god bless the Stoudemire family in these tough times.

Sadly one of the greatest parts of death is our ability to appreciate and learn from the experience no matter how grave the loss. I hope everyone can take something away from what happened to Mr. Stoudemire in his final moments.

I don't disagree nor do I wish death on anyone and it sucks he died but because he was a moron his family are the ones suffering...Because he was a moron he could have killed others... That is something I do not get...When doing something dumb think not just about yourself but what could happen to others in that situation...What if he had hit a car with a baby in it... I know its late and the chances of it happening are slim but he could have killed others with his reckless driving.
