Some might have assumed at the start of the season that Dwight Howard had this award locked up, he currently sits at 8th in blocked shots per game, and while stats don't tell you everything about a player's defensive productivity, the voters have, in the past, been inclined to vote for the guys that are either leading the league in steals, or leading the league in blocks. McGee and Jordan are both at 3 blocks per game, more than a full block more than Howard, Ibaka is no slouch on the defensive end either. On top of that, its been a few seasons since the voters pick a back court defender so guys like Conley and CP3 might steal a few votes away from the big guys for their defensive efforts. And well all know that Kobe is a fierce defender and has never been recognized for his effort with this award. Is he a good enough defender to win DPOTY?

Who you got?

Several people were upset that I had left AI 2.0 off the list so I made a new poll with Iggy at the top of the list.

Even with the refined list it really annoys me that Kobe is on this poll. Don't let All-League defensive awards that should have gone to D. Wade the past few years fool you, he is not a top 30 defender in the league - and even most Laker fans will readily agree with that I'm sure.

Anyway, give me Igoudala. That's the best defensive team in the league and the guys defense is absurd. He puts a blanket over just about anyone he faces and just sets the tone for the team on that end. I think his D. rating is something ridiculous like 90 or 91 and his defensive win shares are tied for the league lead with Dwight.

He is the best overall defender in basketball.

So you still leave Josh Smith off though. Awards are crap anyways (just like the entire league). They always give them to the shoe deals:

Player Season STL BLK PF DRtg
Kevin Garnett 2007-08 1.4 1.3 2.3 94
Dwight Howard 2008-09 1 2.9 3.4 95
Dwight Howard 2009-10 0.9 2.8 3.5 95

Dwight Howard 2010-11 1.4 2.4 3.3 94
Kevin Garnett 2010-11 1.3 0.8 2.1 95

Marc Gasol 2011-12 1.1 2.3 3 95
Dwight Howard 2011-12 1.5 2 3.2 93
Andre Iguodala 2011-12 1.9 0.5 1.4 92

Gotta be Iggy or Dwight... Both got a DRTG of 92-94 and lead the league in DWS.

Edge to Iggy since Dwight won the last 3, but as players start to get their legs under them, his numbers may get worse; Dwight is just doing what he always does.

Over half the people in your list are leaving me scratching my head...

Why in God's name are Conley, McGee, Gasol, old man Kobe, Duncan and KG, etc. over the likes of Deng, Tony Allan, Bogut, etc.

Dwight has this award locked up for at least the next 2-3 years until media can find someone who is somewhat close so that it doesn't look too ridiculous, but stops it from being so predictable.

This list is laughable, No one mentioned Bynum, it's Hilarious, he covers up so many of the lakers mistakes. They have the number 1 defense in the league in terms of field goal percentage nad they are 4 th in ppg allowed. He has the highest defensive rating on this list and he is the number one reason why people struggle to score against the lakers. Teams do not go inside on the lakers because they cant, the lakers turn every team into jump shooters, as soon as Bynum come s out and Pau plays center, teams get to the rim every time. I can't believe I see Kobe, KG and Duncan on this list and people talking about Bogut is hilarious, he is out for the year!

Not exactly. Check out this quote from John Hollinger....

The Sixers are the league's best defensive team by a wide margin, and Iguodala is their best defensive player by a wide margin. It's not like this is new -- he's been doing this for years, but somehow the league's PR directors er coaches, keep voting Kobe Bryant to the All-Defense and ignoring how Iggy shuts down opposing wingmen.

Try this stat on: Opposing small forwards have a PER of 8.2 against Iguodala, according to 82games.com. He turns the average opponent into Terrence Williams or Quincy Pondexter. A lot of people are pushing Luol Deng for this spot because of his defense, but Iguodala's defensive numbers are dramatically better and he's had a better PER than Deng in each of the past five seasons. If you're going to reward a defensive ace, Iggy is the guy.

haha I was just playing around but in all seriousness as of now there is really no clear cut winner I can see anyone winning it at this point .. the 2 favorites as of now are probably Iggy and Dwight?

Highly doubt it will happen though non big men players never win it, who were the last two, artest and payton?
