The Miami Heat, San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Clippers, Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks are pursuing free-agent forward Kenyon Martin, according to league sources.

Martin has spoken with executives from each of the clubs and is hoping to make his decision next week.

The veteran of 11 NBA seasons will be eligible to sign and begin playing with a team as soon as the Xinjiang Guanghui Flying Tigers complete their season in the Chinese Basketball Association.

Martin signed a $2.6 million deal with Xinjiang during the lockout, but left the team in late December in hopes of returning to the NBA.

The CBA's rules, however, prohibit him from joining an NBA team until Xinjiang's season ends, whether after the regular season or the playoffs. Xinjiang is currently out of the playoffs, which means Martin could potentially sign with an NBA club when the CBA season ends Feb. 16.

Martin, 34, is coming off the least productive season of his career, having averaged just 8.6 points and 6.2 rebounds in Denver last year. But contenders view him as a strong and tough defender who plays unselfishly and has a winning pedigree -- Martin twice reached the NBA Finals with the New Jersey Nets.

Martin's priority is to join a contender on which he'll have a sizeable role, according to a person close to Martin.

The Clippers and the Knicks can offer the $2.5 million mini-midlevel exception. San Antonio can as well, but it is unlikely to do so because of the luxury tax, sources said.

Atlanta is also limited by luxury tax concerns. Miami can only offer the veteran's minimum of $1.4 million.

Knicks make sense, Clippers not really because he'd be getting like 10 mins a game with Blake, Deandre, and Reggie working the front line. Spurs actually make the most sense but if they don't want to go into the luxury, then whatever.

This guy is often injured too

Knicks should trade Amare and Chandler for Howard and sign Martin.

Kmart with the Spurs would be nice, Him and Splitter as our mainbackup bigs would be awesome, and Bonner would be used more in a 10-15 minute role, which would be the best

Miami is out of the Picture since they have Haslem I would think. I think the Clippers might get him, as he'll just get mins behind Griffin/Jordan

Heat dont need him, Hawks are not contenders, Dont see how he can help NY but his best option is LAC because they need a backup big

This guy is often injured tooNot a chance. The Clippers need him, or someone like him so bad. Reggie's minutes would get cut to 10. K-Mart would get 20-30 mpg and finish a lot of games when teams try to go hack-a-DeAndre.

How much money can the Clippers offer him? I feel like they are the only team that can offer the role that the Knicks can but can they offer 2.5 mil?

I don't know the Spurs or Hawks rosters well enough to know where he fits on them...

I don't get how he would help the Knicks. He provides 0 offense and can't shoot. Unless D'antoni is about to be canned, I see no need for Kmart.

Depth is always good, and actually essential this year. Tyson & Amare can't play 48 min each. You don't see how adding a guy that can back up Amare & Chandler and play tough nosed defense, rebound & provide some scoring off the bench can help? He could easily play 30+mpg backing up those 2.

NY's offense will come around, a guy like Kmart would help tremendously. NY's defense is improved, but Kmart would make their defense that much better.

Of course he would help defensively, there is no denying that. But right now our problems are mostly on the offensive side. No one can make a shot! Kmart is not really known for his offensive prowess, but more for defense so I doubt he makes a big difference. If the Knicks get a new coach then he would help a lot more.
