View Full Version : Ben Wallace: I will retire at the end of the season

AUBURN HILLS Ben Wallace apparently is down to the last 59 games of his National Basketball Association career.

The 37-year-old Detroit Piston told Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix that this season would be his last, according to a Twitter post by Mannix.

Wallace contemplated retirement before this season and last season, and the idea that this season would be last was widespread. If he sticks to what he told Mannix, Wallace's 16th season indeed will be his last.

A 2-5 team entering tonight's game against the New York Knicks, with only fringe playoff hopes, may be a contributing factor, but at Wallace's age, retirement never is far away.

Might as well retire now, the team is trash and going nowhere. It'll be sad to see Ben go but he has done a lot for this franchise and his time is up. I'm sure soon his number will be retired in the rafters at the Palace. Thanks for everything Ben!

I dunno if he wants to retire a Piston, because that's where his glory days were, but I'd like to see him coming off the bench for a contender this season. Maybe LA? Dalls sure could use him. He's still a hard enough worker that he could help a team with minutes off the bench. Give him a chance to earn a one more ring before he hangs it up. Mike Brown is a defense-first coach, I'm sure he'd love to have Wallace sitting at the end of the bench when Bynum gets into foul trouble.

Ben was a beast! Also, the catalyst to the palace brawl! He's had a good career and the league is better for having him.

He's lots of peoples' favorites and mine too. A remarkable player, and it will be a sad day when he's out of the NBA (such as it is now notwithstanding).

I agree, going from an undrafted player to anchoring one of the best defenses in the league during the the early to mid 2000's.

He was undersized and couldn't score. He made himself what he was and fortunately for him (and the Pistons), the Pistons gave hime a shot. Safe to say it worked well for both parties.

I do, he was the beast of the east and honestly he was better then Dwight Howard defensively who is considered to be the top defender in todays game

He was a top 3 post defender ever, and without question a HOFer.

He has had one awesome career, without a doubt one of the best defenders ever. Nice to see him finish it out in Detroit.

He was such a beast on defense, that's why I got so much satisfaction seeing Timmy posterize him in the 2005 finals. Yes, I'm living in the past since the glory days of my Spurs are pretty much over.

But Big Ben, he was dominant on defense and a true example of hard work over talent. It was a sight to behold...he was also surprisingly quick with his hands, getting into passing lanes.
