The Phoenix Suns have waived veteran swingman Mickael Pietrus after reaching a buyout agreement on Pietrus' $5.3 expiring contract.

The Suns announced the move before their preseason finale at home Thursday night against the Denver Nuggets.

By forfeiting $1.2 million of his 2011-12 salary, according to the Arizona Republic, Pietrus convinced the Suns to release him outright. That will allow Pietrus to become an unrestricted free agent if he clears waivers in 48 hours.

"Lon and I have been working on this for the past few days," Pietrus' agent, Bill McCandless, told ESPN.com. "We reached a buyout agreement that's fair for Mickael Pietrus and fair for the Suns. I'm sure Mickael will have options (once he clears waivers)."

Pietrus was actually traded to the Toronto Raptors earlier this month for a conditional second-round pick, but the Raptors rescinded the trade after Pietrus' troublesome right knee was flagged during his Toronto physical.

That trade also called for the Suns to pay $1 million to Toronto and left little doubt that Pietrus no longer had a future in Phoenix. The former Golden State and Orlando swingman was acquired by the Suns as part of the December trade that brought center Marcin Gortat to the desert and created some salary-cap flexibility for the summer of 2012 through the recent release of Vince Carter.

Pietrus is expected to draw the interest from various playoff teams -- Boston, New York and the Los Angeles Lakers among them -- should he clear waivers.

The only other veteran player of note on a league list of freshly released players issued to all 30 teams Thursday, sources said, was Miami center Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who had already announced his intention to retire after one season with the Heat.

Other players with NBA experience waived Thursday as teams pare down their rosters in advance of Sunday's start to the 2011-12 season include Boston's Michael Sweetney, Cleveland's Manny Harris and the Los Angeles Lakers' Gerald Green.

He'd be a good depth add to most contenders I'd imagine...

Don't think anyone will claim him, but he'll sign with a contender for the min. I'd imagine.

He'd play well on the Knicks, he loves to shoot 3s on offense and is a good defender...

Knicks made the move for Baron Davis to play Iman at SG, so I dont see much of a role Pietrus would have in NY.

This move should guarantee he ends up in Boston.

Good defender. Good three-point shooter. He'd be a great addition to any contender.

He would fit in Boston backing up Paul Pierce.

He's probably better than Sasha Pavlovic & Marquis Daniels.

Knew that was going to be the case when they waived Gilbert Brown.

Hopefully if he clears waivers Magic offer him a deal. He really provided a lot coming off the bench in not only finding open shots back getting back on defense and being intimidating.

I would love the Bulls to add this guy if he is healthy. I know they need a 5th big man, but man I can't pass up a guy who can knock down the 3, plays D, and is pretty athletic.

I could see him trying to get with Boston.
Is this a case under cap teams getting first dibs?
If so I see Clippers trying to add him.

We made that move to make sure Toney isn't a PG for this season since he has the court vision of Stevie Wonder.

Iman will be Sixth Man. If not, Pietrus can come off behind Melo at SF.

Trust me he's not that good.

Defensively he's good, but on offense if you pass him the ball, he will shoot it even if its from half court or if two players are on him. There's not a shot that he doesnt like.

If your team needs a chucker then get him or else I'd lay off.

Just saying.

Blasphemy, D Rose has a smile that will make anyone melt. And that bashful personality is to die for. Any personality issues he has Noah makes up with leaps and bounds. You can also round that group out with the hunk Kyle Korver.

Dear Knicks Fans,

Shut up.

you mean like all the bull and heat fans as well. No bait intended but the reason these fans claim these players is because they lack the depth or scoring at multiple positions. And if you already knew there were going to be knick fans why come in here and bash them while at the same time making yourself look like a total douche

I think that the Celtics is the best place for him to be. Great back up for Pierce, great energy guy that provides solid defence and offence, lines up with the mentality of the team...great fit overall.

lol seriously, I don't get all the anger toward NY, we've even seen people creating dummy accounts disguised as Knick fans saying stupid things to try to make NY fanbase look bad...its so weird

But yea, NY, BOS or CHI would make sense. NY probably offers him the most playing time though since NY doesn't have a real backup 3 & Pietrus' game seems like it would thrive under D'antoni.

Boston would be a great fit, they could really use some more depth this season, only issue is they can be easily outbid as they only have the Vets min.
