who said they didnt earn it? wtf is he talking about? is it because people dont think they can repeat? they are definitely still contenders, but they did lose 2 key players that were very instrumental in their play off run (chandler and barea). Chill out marion, u should be worrying about ur ugly hair do instead.

First Terry, now Marion. I mean, they won the title, everyone gave them props, and everything thinks they're a great team.

"Disrespected"? Come on...

I love the Mavs and all, but this act is tired.

Who is trying to take what away from them? I don't get it...

Can somebody knock these guys out in round 1 next year? Why are they complaining? They won, the beat the Lakers/OKC/Heat fair and square. Nobody is really saying that they didn't earn it (other than some who just say the Refs wanted their team to lose to them).

lol these players.

The Mavs lost Chandler, Barea, and Caron Butler. At this point OKC is the clear favorites in the West. Dallas, San Antonio, LAL, LAC, and Memphis are all behind OKC. Dallas is the 2nd or 3rd best team in the West, at this point probably 2nd.

the mavs have the right to be as cocky as they want. they are the champs.

i think they may be upset because due to the lock out, they werent televised as much. usually all we see is re runs of the finals during the off season.

i would be a little butt hurt too if ppl constantly put other teams ahead of them (thunder, for what ever reason)

DALLAS -- Are the NBA champion Dallas Mavericks getting their deserved respect entering the new season?

Not if you ask Shawn Marion.

"We've gotten to the point where everybody started overlooking us and talking about everybody else and I kind of got (mad) about it," Marion said before Sunday's 106-92 preseason loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. "Y'all tying to take something away from us that we've worked hard for and we took.

"We earned everything we did last year," Marion said. "Everybody on this team earned the right to be addressed as world champions so everybody needs to address them like that."

Asked who has been disrespecting the champs, Marion gave a pass to the local media gathered around him and called out the national prognosticators that think the Miami Heat, the star-studded team Dallas took out in six games in the NBA Finals, and others will prevent the Mavs, who lost defensive leader Tyson Chandler and other key pieces in free agency, from repeating.

"You don't be listening to the people? Look what the media is saying," Marion said. "Look outside (the local media) what they be saying. They can kiss our a--. I got my hardware. We earned it. We took it."

The theme of disrespect certainly isn't new in sports. Marion isn't the only Mavs player trumpeting the fact that Dallas isn't being hailed as the team to beat as the regular season approaches. The Mavs and Heat meet on Christmas Day in Dallas.

However, Marion might be the only one surprised by it. Guard Jason Terry suggested during the summer that national attention would elude the Mavs and shine on LeBron James and the Heat, Kobe Bryant and the Lakers and young, on-the-rise clubs like the Thunder.

Dirk Nowitzki certainly seemed to expect such treatment.

"We weren't the favorites to win it last year, so nobody really knows what's going to happen in the next couple of months," Nowitzki said at the start of training camp. "So, all this favorite stuff is a bunch of speculation anyway. Nobody knows what's going to happen in June. All we have to do is get prepared and get all the new pieces in the right places and play our butt off."

This is the difference between a scrub like Shawn Marion....and someone like Kobe Bryant.

Marion is still so hung up on last season's success, he expects that last season should be a continuation of the following season.

The beauty of the NBA is that each season has its own identity.

Kobe would never say such things. He'd probably go out and say: "Well, yes we are the world champions, but the goal is to re-generate that momentum because every new season takes its own identity. Yes, winning another championship would result in a "repeat" or "3peat" (but you can't think like that), but the goal is to concentrate on the upcoming season and not take anything for granted. I don't give a **** what others say about us. They can say or do say whatever they wanna do. We just expect to hold the trophy again in June... It is what it is."

I think you're mistaking the message given to Kobe by the Lakers' PR people. After the controversies of 2004 he has been very carefully managed so that his image would rehab. He rarely went off script for the last few years because the rabid reaction to anything he says is too distracting.

I think it's the mentality to be honest. Even though there is some truth to the PR thing you are referring to, understand that Kobe Bryant is the team captain of the Lakers. He has to create that mindset that you can't be just wholly dependent on the previous years' championship and that you should expect special treatment and acknowledgement the following season. Kobe has never done that.

But a washed up role player like Marion is expecting those type of things. He should just be happy that after bouncing around after his PHX days, he finally got a championship (well deserved), but that doesn't mean he should get special treatment or anything like that.

I think you've nailed it by contrasting a leader with a support player like Marion. Marion has never been happy as a support player.

After seeing the way he defended Lebron in the finals last year, as a matter of fact the way he played D the entire playoffs, that man can say whatever he wants...... and last I checked he's not getting paid to be an diction specialist.

It's not respectful to think that an older team can't go back to back.

Tim Duncan in his prime never brought the Spurs back-to-back titles. The best defensive team in NBA history didn't go back-to-back. Plenty examples of amazing teams not being able to get in done twice in a row in recent years.

they'll have to prove if theyre a one hit wonder or not, has nothing to do with respect or lack there of.

Caron Butler didn't play in the postseason. They also gained Lamar Odom, Vince Carter, Delonte West, Roddy Beaubois, and Dominique Jones.

They won the championship and are now an afterthought and it's about OKC and MIA.

I like to see the fire.

Totally agree. Plus last year's win had to be considered an upset of sorts. The Mavs, as stacked with quality role players as they were, had to be regarded as the underdog. This year they'll have to make it through the Thunder at the very least if they want to make it back to the finals.

it wont be easy for them, they'll be seriously challenged in three of the four rounds, IMO.

They lost their biggest piece. I can't blame the media for not picking them as the favourites.

We've seen this before. The Mavs haven't been able to win without a prime C. And this was when Dirk was in his prime and so were other pieces like Josh Howard, Devin Harris and others.
