no, it achieves nothing. they won't lure top FA's even if they had cap space. they just need to trade Horford or Smith for a quality C and they'll be fine.

Not this season, but probably in the future. There's no reason to cut him now. Won't help them get any FAs or anything...

I'd imagine he gets it two off-seasons from now. Just a stab in the dark...assuming the make up of that team doesn't change drastically.

as the two above me said, it doesn't make sense now. He will get the amnesty cut if the Hawks hold onto it a couple years down the line, when they can then fall under the cap and do something with it. Not getting anyone of importance by cutting him now, and it would just hurt the team big time in the win column.

Amnesty their best player and return to the irrelevant obscurity they were before he got there? Sounds like a bad idea.....

who are they gonna sign with the space?, might as well keep him since you they have to pay his salary anyways i believe.

if their owner is rich, then yes

Just send us Al Horford and everything will be ok :D

Kidding, they should consider it after next year though. If they realize that they won't be better than a five seed and decide to start rebuilding (e.g. Dealing out Smith), they should consider it.

Atlanta and Miami are two of the top party spots for NBA players. They would be a Free Agent Hot Spot if they actually had an ownership that was any good.

That contract was crazy from the day he signed. No worse contract in Pro Basketball.

Very true the players always love coming down to the ATL. If they had an owner that really cared it would be really major down there. Thats why I was excited when they were getting new ownership but because of all that lockout bs I guess he got scared off........

Rashard Lewis?

No. Makes no sense to not have Joe Johnson right now. He's still a great player. A couple years down the line though, it might make more sense.

Definitely not. He is still one of the top-5 SG's in the game and has the ability to be a top-25 player. Rashard Lewis and Gilbert Arenas run away with this award. Gil is still getting paid even though he is amnestyied.

Explain why or why not.

no but they should take a long weekend retreat and ask themselves whatever strange alien force compelled them to offer the worst contract in the history of Professional sports.

JJ may be over paid but definitely still a great player.

How about instead of all explaining why or why not again, how about just reading what we all said in the exact same thread a week ago.

Why would they? Their payroll is at like 40 million with him, it's not like they are paying luxury tax or need to free up cap space for a signing. May as well keep him they are paying him regardless.

They are stuck in medocrity with or without him.

they're right above medicority with him. A solid 5 to 8 seed in the East depending on what happens to Dwight and how teams like the Knicks, Pacers, and Sixers improve. They're probably not a playoff team without him.
