Dwight Howard's agent, Dan Fegan, tells SI that the Magic gave Howard permission to have contact with several teams to explore his options

Lakers, Nets and ? (Rockets? They were the supposed second team that tampered with Howard)

UPDATE: Full Story http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/7337505/orlando-magic-otis-smith-gave-permission-dwight-howard-agent-speak-nets

Dan Fegan, the agent for Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard, dismissed reports that his client had illegal contact with the New Jersey Nets, saying Howard had received permission to explore potential trades.

Magic GM Otis Smith confirmed to ESPN the Magazine on Friday night that he granted permission to Fegan to speak to the Nets about a deal involving Howard.

Fegan read the following prepared statement over the phone to The Magazine: "I read reports today of a meeting between Dwight Howard, his representatives and the New Jersey Nets which claimed, according to the story's anonymous sources, that such a meeting violated the NBA's tampering policies. This story is clearly inaccurate with respect to tampering claims and other facts. Tampering doesn't apply once a team grants permission for a player and/or his representatives to make contact with another team. The Magic have given us permission to have contact with several teams in order for Dwight to explore his options. I most definitely had contact with the teams I was granted permission to speak with. Since we had permission to have contact with several teams the report of possible tampering is undeniably false.

"In addition, the report that Dwight was supposed to be traded today is also inaccurate. In fact, so many of the facts reported in today's story are inaccurate, it is difficult to separate the facts from fiction, so I'm not even going to bother to address the other inaccuracies."

Fegan said both he and Howard have spoken by phone with the Nets but no face-to-face meeting has occurred.

An agent not affiliated with Fegan or his agency, LaGardere Unlimited, said such contact between stars and potential trade partners is standard before such deals are consummated.

"No team would think of acquiring a star of Dwight's magnitude without talking to him first," the agent said, who asked to remain anonymous. Sources said New Orleans Hornets guard Chris Paul had such conversations with both the Lakers and Clippers, two teams interested in acquiring him, in the last week.

Sources said the Nets are one of three teams Howard would be interested in joining if they can make an equitable deal with the Magic to acquire him, but that the Nets, for the moment, appear to be the favorite. The other two teams were not identified.

Fegan, Howard and the Magic were committed to quietly determining where the Magic center might go to avoid the media attention that Paul received in recent weeks and Carmelo Anthony endured last winter when he left the Denver Nuggets for the New York Knicks.

What if the Rockets could somehow pull the trigger on the CP3 deal than trade something like Lowry+Buddinger+Patrick Peterson+picks+cash for a one year rental of Dwight? Could they compete with Gasol, Dwight and all of the free agents they inevitably bring in?

Al Horford, expiring Hinrich, 2 1sts, and Marvin (if they want him). We will even throw in the Dwight Howard stopper in Collins. Magic can rebuild with a young, all-star Gator.

We can even sign and trade Crawford (who they want) and we can take on Hedo's contract.

What other teams would give up a young big "all-star" guy? Wolves with Love? As of right now, I believe the Magic would want Horford and ATL is the 3rd team (with Nets and Lakers). Howard is from Atlanta and is Josh Smith's best friend. A Howard/Joe/Josh team could be enough to resign for his home team.

The thing is, out of Lopez, Horford and Bynum, what team has the best "additions"? Hawks is willing to give up anybody with Horford (Teague, Johnson, Marvin, Zaza).

Mavs, Celtics, Spurs, etc really don't have any young guys to rebuild a team with.

hmmm. Mavs eh? I'm trying to think what valuable assets the Mavs have besides maybe Rodrigue Beaubois. Do we smell another three team deal?

The Mavs are included because Howard will sign an extension with them, and NOT Minnesota, which is why they and other teams with assets weren't listed as possible destinations.

Who makes the best deal has nothing to do with it except to have deals to push the primary team that Howard wants to sign with to make a super offer and compete for his services.

THIS is how a good team mate does it. He doesn't announce what team he wants to go to or demand a trade publicly. He keeps his mouth shut, tells his team he wants to go to Dallas, for instance, and Orlando allows LAL and NJ to also bid to make Dallas put its best offer up. Otherwise, Dallas offers peanuts and they get nothing.

So ORL front office is doing a good job.
