Why would the rockets make this trade? It makes no sense whats so ever. Even if you get nene you are like 9 or 8 games better, while making lakers three times better. You also might not get nene. NO trade is not great because the picks most likely will not be in the top ten.

Maybe they got tired of mediocrity and wanted to fill the huge gap in the middle they've had for the past few years with one of the best bigs in the league and a two time champ?

It does raise an interesting question, do you make your team better even if it makes your main competitor better as well?

they are only a little better, while you make a team is west three times better. This trade does nothing for but make playoffs and lose in first round. plus gasol needs another star if expect win in playoff games because he never has won a playoff game without kobe. While you lose your first round draft pick.

while making lakers three times better.

Lakers lose Odom and Gasol, all their size.
They gain cp3.

How are they 3x better?

As of right now the Lakers did not get that much better at all. Especially if Bynum gets injured AGAIN they will be in trouble.

The Lakers really need to acquire at least 1 good big man.

Let's not ignore the fact that the Lakers did give up 2 of their top 3 frontcourt players which, outside of Kobe Bryant, was the main reason why they were so dominant. Are the Lakers that much better after this trade? Yes, they added an All-NBA point guard which can never be considered a bad move. But since they aren't as strong up front, I'm not sure the Lakers got that much better all around.

They're probably going to get Nene as well. A Gasol/Nene frontcourt would be one of the best and most versatile in basketball. Not to mention freeing up minutes for Courtney Lee who has the potential to be a big time scorer. What more do you want?
