A lot of uncertainty remains about the upcoming NBA season and how teams will perform while playing a compressed 66-game schedule. But that isn't keeping Las Vegas oddsmakers from installing the Miami Heat as the early favorites to win LeBron James' first championship ring.

MGM Mirage race and sports director Jay Rood tells the Los Angeles Times the Heat are his 2-to-1 favorite. Next up, at 9-to-2, are the Lakers and the Chicago Bulls. The Oklahoma City Thunder check in at 5-to-1.

Jay Kornegay, director of the Las Vegas Hilton Race and Sports Book, also has the Heat as 2-to-1 favorites, and lists the Bulls at 6-to-1 and the Lakers, Thunder and Dallas Mavericks all at 7-to-1.

The Point Forward blog at SI.com offers a thorough look at the effects a crammed schedule had on the last shortened season, in 1999. The bottom line is that shooting percentages are likely to suffer most.

West is wide open and I personally don't have the Mavs getting back to the Finals.

I'd say Vegas has it right.

Didn't Vegas favor us last year too? I couldn't care less what they predict. MIA has got to prove it on the court.

To be very honest, it just depends on how FA goes. If Dallas can retain both Chandler and Butler, then it will be interesting to see how the do. I still think OKC is going to surprise a lot of people this year, and make it to the finals.

It's kind of fun to watch all the speculation and the combination of 'mail the trophy to Miami' or not, 'play the season' or not, etc. But it's a great game and we always play the season and it always has interesting results.

Not suprising. Dallas wasn't expected to win last year either...b/c they arent the best in the west ON PAPER... even though they were on the court.

It's going to be wide open this year. With teams playing 3 nights in a row there's going to be a lot of tired teams when we get to the playoffs. Should be an interesting season.

If Dallas doesn't re-sign Chandler, then it'll be tough for them to make it to the Finals.

I can't argue with that. These odds are based on current rosters & the Bulls still have a gaping hole at SG. But I expect these odds to tighten when/if the Bulls plug that hole.

Sounds about right to me.. I expect the Thunder to have a deep playoff run. A series between the Thunder and Bulls would be fun to watch.

Funny. Even after winning the championship we get no respect. Gonna be great winning as underdogs again. Anyone who says Miami is the clear cut favorite as of now is an idiot.

Its understandable they are the faves based on what everyone would bet on.

Wow they're 2.5-1 which is really low. Only an idiot would take that.

If you want to make a decent profit, I suggest betting on Bulls (6.5-1) and Oklahoma City (7-1).

2010-2011 Season

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?page=SummerForecast10-NBAChamps

1. LA Lakers - 52 votes
2. Miami Heat - 34 votes
3. Orlando Magic - 5 votes
4. Boston Celtics - 1 vote
5. Oklahoma City - 1 vote

Dallas nor Chicago were even on the list last year.

Well to be fair... Who really thinks the Mavs are repeating?

Who really thought we would beat Portland? Who really thought we would beat LA? Who really thought we would beat OKC? Who really thought we would beat Miami?

Dallas has to have the nod over everyone to win the championship as of now. We are the champions and will remain the champions until someone knocks us off.

imo it should be

heat (slight favorites, but they need post presence to be clear favs)
lakers (#1 favs if they get howard, #2 this way)
mavs (keep butler, but trade him if things arent going well midseason)
celtics (yes i feel everyone counts them out unfairly. They still have exactly one more year left, and i believe they will make a move too)
bulls (if they get a sg or else i have thunder ahead of them)
thunder (they need to trade perkins)

That is true. The mavs are the team to beat. they are the champs. But i disagree about how u portray ur mavs as complete underdogs.
everyone knew theyd beat portland. I was surprised the swept us.. but not surprised they won (because of how gasol disappeared against the hornets) and i was damn sure NOT surprised about dallas beating okc. OKC was really over rated last season imo. Im surprised they got to the conference finals. They over achieved IMO.
The only surprise was beating miami.. which I was really happy about :)

That's how it is every year. The team who won the title is the favorite until someone else beats them.

Trading Perk would be the dumbest move ever unless it was to acquire a better center. Perkins was hurt last season, I think it's ridiculous that everyone fails to realize this.

i made so much money in 06. It was the only the second time in my life i put money when the season started. I put 500 on miami to win it all before the season even started.

once i put money on charlotte to make the playoffs lol. i think they came in 9th that season :(

i also made a bet once with a friend for 500 dollars that lakers would be the spurs in the 04 semi finals. I even made that bet after we went down 0-2 lol.

Those are the only bets i ever made. 2 out of 3 is pretty good. I cashed in HUGE when miami won

There's not a little thing called common sense when placing odds on who will win.

Vegas has it right, though, Dallas is not even favored in their conference to reach the Finals. I like the Lakers and Thunder in the West, or the Clipps if they could SOMEHOW get Dwight and CP3.

So... common sense is putting the Heat as the clear cut favorites but putting the Mavs 5th (the team who beat the Heat in the Finals)?

Do people seriously not know how lines work?

Vegas odds are put together by geniuses (yup, they rape people and take all their cash) who predict what fans/gamblers would most likely think are the faves. So its not really a shot at Dallas, but rather they think they should lower the odds for the Heat so that in case the Heat win, they still make tons of money.

I agree that Heat should be paying that low because non fans and gamblers would probably pick them a lot. Bulls/Thunder are the way to go though.
