View Full Version : Lakers bring new coaching staff, many questions into NBA season

Now that the NBA lockout has apparently ended, the Lakers remain one of the league's most intriguing teams. But what exactly will they look like in 2011-12?

Most of the regulars will be back. Kobe Bryant (33 years old) has three years left on his contract, as does Pau Gasol (31). Lamar Odom (32) has two years remaining, along with Andrew Bynum (24), though neither has a fully guaranteed deal beyond this season.

Then it gets interesting.

Fisher and Steve Blake are holdovers but the Lakers want to add a point guard before the season starts, via free agency or the expected "amnesty" provision in the new labor deal that allows teams to waive a player without having to pay luxury taxes on his salary, or have his salary count toward the salary cap.

The Lakers are curious to see if veteran point guard Baron Davis gets cut by Cleveland. He has two years and $28.7 million left on his contract, though he can be signed for substantially less than that. The Lakers also want a shooter and are monitoring whether forward Rashard Lewis (two years, $43.8 million remaining) gets waived by Washington.

There are other roster questions.

There's a chance guard Shannon Brown returns despite declining a $2.4-million player option last June. The start of his 2010-11 season was much stronger than his finish but the Lakers hadn't shut the door on re-signing him after he averaged 8.7 points and 19.1 minutes.

Don't like Rashard Lewis that much and Baron has been discussed in here before. Would anyone here take either one for the MLE? If not for the MLE, then for a 1 year vet min contract?

No to both of them.

We already have problems about touches.

If is not a SUPERSTAR ( paul, howard ) we dont need to add dudes that need to shoot.

I'd rather get us a shooting specialist, to be honest.

It wont happen, we wont be able to afford Lewis, as for Davis we might, but I just hope he knows he wont be getting more than 10 shots a night

From what I've seen lewis lost his a long time ago and doesn't seem to be hungry anymore davis is just old and will shoot to much,we need young legs and some back up post players......make that a new bench entirely besides blake, barnes and ebanks.

I would love to have Baron. The guy is clutch and could provide points when Kobe is out. He is cold blooded.

Of course, all for the right price.

I'm all for Baron. He'd be a nice piece off the bench offensively. I wouldn't want him in the starting lineup because there's not enough ball to go around, but I think he'd flourish with us in the 2nd unit.

What happens with Blake? Does he replace Fish?

Not really sure.. It's not like Fisher is just going to get buried so I say he starts. Our PG situation sucks as it is, and I'm not so high on Blake to begin with.

All i hope for is a Howard Bynum Swap. Coaching staff need to go in and beg Jimmy boy to do what it takes to land Howard.

Hmm...IDK. I would like to give Steve another chance on a different system. I liked his defense as well, if those shots start hitting then I would be fine with him.

If Fisher accepts a 1996 Byron Scott role then it would make things easier for this squad. He can still play in stretches where our team needs him the most [ clutch ].

GREATNESS ONE

This defense needs to be a lot more alert, hungrier and dedicated. We gotta focus on the defensive side of the ball this year and that's what I hope our coaching staff works on. Bringing in M"Me First" guys are not gonna help this team. We're gonna find out a lot about not just our team but the rest of the league in general. I was freaking out with no BBALL but one thing is for , just like football the beginning of the season with all these different acquisitions are gonna be great.

Fisher needs to get buried on the depth chart at this point, the Lakers are player 4 on 5 with him out there, no offense to Fish, I respect his contributions, but age has caught and passed him.

i agree here. someone like Kapono would suffice...cheap but just a pure shooter
